SHOUGANG NO.3 BLAST FURNACE MUSEUM

The extinct furnace is reborn as a exhibition space with a trace of rusty iron. Sited at the northwest of Shougang Park, the project is the most distinctive and stunning area with highest density of ironmaking equipment, as the starting of enterprise construction a century ago. The design focuses on preserving the collective memory exclusive to the site, removing unnecessary industrial buildings and constructing a dialogue between the blast furnace and nature, to inject new functions into the project. By leveraging the situation, there are 3 auxiliary halls between the Furnace and Xiuchi as lecture room, temporary exhibition hall and souvenir shop.

The design adopts two visiting circulations featuring nautilus shell spirals according to the prominent style of juxtaposing “Industry” and “Nature”. Innovatively, the design embraces six groups of spatial devices. ‘Wall of Honor’ has two facade with different texture. One side adopts vertical boards chiselled by manual craftsmanship without polishing. On the other side is made of smooth concrete. In this wall is engraved Shougang’s important events over the past century. ‘Fire of Shougang’s Life’ is standing in the center of the water yard that is 10m in diameter. It has an image of long-lasting flame, embodying the thriving spirit of Shougang like a furnace in the existing. Starting from the water yard, the Melted Iron Light Ribbon runs straight to the east and stops at the ‘Pillar of Honor’ wrapped in red perforated plates.

‘The folding staircase’ is like a long dragon. it is attached to the giant cavity steel truss on the west side of the Furnace, which winds from the main hall to the main exhibition hall, to guide visitors. A 9.7-meter-high platform is mainly used as display area, which accumulates a large number of remaining crafts in the production period. Here, three sets of swing chute are the fifth group with the greatest astonishment. Taking elevator to the platform with the elevation height of 72m, one end of the overhead travelling crane connects the ‘Glass skywalk’, which is the highest spatial installation. Another dialogue between “industry” and “nature” is launched by looking back at Xiuchi and Shijing Mountain.

과거 산업 시설의 시간을 볼 수 있는 녹슨 용광로, 서우강 철강공장 박물관

불꺼진 용광로는 녹슨 철의 모습을 간직한 채 박물관으로 새롭게 태어났다. 서우강 공원의 북서쪽에 위치한 이 공장지구는 100년 전, 철강으로 유명한 서우강 그룹이 조직적으로 거대한 규모의 건설을 시작한 시점에 형성된 곳으로 독특하고 뛰어난 제철 장비 시설을 갖추고 있는 공장 밀집 지역이다. 2008년 이전 사업으로 인해 더이상 사용되지 않는 공장은 과거의 거대 산업시설을 전시하는 공간이 됐다. 공장은 이 대지만이 가진 기억을 보존하면서, 불필요한 산업 시설은 제거됐다. 또한, 용광로와 주변 자연 간의 대화를 이끌어내면서 새로운 전시공간으로 변화됐다. 이러한 조건 아래 용광로와 냉각 연못 사이에는 강의실, 임시 전시장, 기념품 판매 공간, 보조홀 등이 조성됐다.

전시공간 내부는 “산업”과 “자연”을 병치하는 공간 콘셉트에 따라, 긴 나선형의 두 개의 방문 동선으로 구분되며, 6개의 공간적 장치가 마련되어 있다. 먼저, ‘명예의 벽’은 한 쪽은 연마되지 않고 수작업으로 조각된 면과 매끄러운 표면의 콘크리트로 만들어져 있는데, 긴 시간동안 발생한 그룹의 주요 사건들이 기록되어 있는 벽이다. ‘서우강 생명의 불’은 물 마당 중앙에 자리 잡고 있는 직경 10m의 이 공간적 장치다. 오래 지속되는 공장의 불꽃의 이미지를 담아낸 곳으로, 기존 공장의 용광로같이 활활타는 서우강의 번영 정신을 보여준다. 물 마당에서 시작하는 붉은 빛은 직선으로 동쪽을 향하고 붉은 천공판으로 감싸진 ‘명예의 기둥’ 앞에서 멈춘다.

‘접혀진 형태의 긴 계단’은 용광로의 서쪽에 있는 거대한 빈 공간에 설치된 계단으로, 철공 지붕틀에 매달린 모습은 마치 기다란 용을 떠올리게 만든다. 계단은 본관에서 주 전시장으로 이어지면서 방문객을 안내한다. 9.7m 높이의 플랫폼은 주로 전시 공간으로 사용되는데, 공장이 운영되던 생산 기간 동안 사용되고 남은 공예품이 전시되어 있다. 마지막으로 공장의 엘리베이터를 타고 72m의 높이까지 올라가면 유리 스카이워크를 만날 수 있다. 이 스카이워크는 이 전시공간 안에서 가장 높은 공간이며, “산업”과 “자연” 사이에서 냉각 연못과 스징산을 둘러볼 수 있도록 한다.
