Inspired by California’s Joshua Tree and Mojave Desert, the studio’s innovative design concept transforms the 143-room hotel into a surreal, iridescent haven. Marking a new design direction for Locke, Holloway Li has curated a living experience carved out of repurposed construction site materials - harnessing upcycling potential to create bespoke furniture and interiors that will adorn the studio rooms, bar and restaurant, co-working spaces, gym and yoga room.
Concrete testing cubes destined for landfill find new purpose at Bermonds Locke, serving as plinths for a six-metre long terrazzo table in the ground floor workspace, and shaped into a bar frontage that will serve Bermondsey’s Beer Mile’s finest beer atop its surface. Repurposed steel rebar and clay bricks form decorative ironwork and joinery elements throughout the space.
Bringing the changing gradient of the desert sunset to South London, Locke's signature functional living rooms on the upper floors will be dipped in blue, beige and grey hues and saturated vibrant reds on the lower floors. The studio has designed bespoke modular sofas handmade using sand mixed with resin lay- up to recreate the desert’s tonality. Rough-sawn timber floors welcome a patina to be marked with steps trodden.
Capturing the psychedelic experience of Joshua Tree underpins the design narrative. An industrial process of zinc-passivation creates an iridescent rainbow finish that will be found on bar tops, wall paneling and echoed by fluted polarising glass sliding partitions in the rooms. 캘리포니아의 조슈아 트리와 모하비 사막에서 영감을 받은 혁신적인 디자인 콘셉트는 143개 객실 규모의 호텔을 초현실적인 무지갯빛 안식처로 바꾸어 놓았다. 버몬드 로크에게 새로운 디자인 방향성을 제시한 홀로웨이 리는 건설 현장 소재들을 새로운 방식으로 활용해 색다른 거주 경험을 만들어냈다. 특히 업사이클 잠재력을 극대화해 스튜디오형 객실, 바, 레스토랑, 협업 공간, 체육관, 요가룸 등에 멋지게 장식해줄 맞춤형 가구와 인테리어 공간을 완성했다.
쓰레기장으로 갈 운명이었던 콘크리트 강도 시험용 큐브는 버몬드 로크에서 새로운 역할을 찾았고, 지상층 업무공간에 있는 6m 길이 테라조 탁자의 주추가 되거나 버몬지 맥주거리 최고의 맥주를 올려놓는 바 전면부가 되었다. 재활용한 철근과 점토벽돌은 공간 곳곳의 장식용 철제 구조물이나 가구로 다시 태어났다.
사막 일몰 풍경의 색감을 사우스 런던으로 옮겨온 로크를 대표하는 기능적 거실 공간은 위층은 블루, 베이지, 그레이로, 아래층은 강렬한 레드로 마감했다. 스튜디오가 디자인한 맞춤형 모듈식 소파는 사막의 색감을 재현하고자 모래와 합성수지를 혼합해 수작업으로 제작했다. 거친 질감의 나무 바닥은 고색 위에 사람들의 발자취를 담아낸다.
조슈아 트리의 사이키델릭한 경험을 녹여낸 것은 디자인 내러티브를 더 풍성하게 해준다. 아연 코팅 작업은 영롱한 무지갯빛 마감을 완성해 주는데, 바 상판과 벽 패널에서 확인할 수 있으며, 세로 홈 편광 유리를 적용한 미딛이식 객실 칸막이와 어우러진다. 이러한 금속 코팅 작업은 금속 소재에 그윽한 멋을 더해줌으로써 사막의 하늘을 호텔의 DNA에 새겨준다. 글 제공 : 할로웨이 리
