Prologue_ Everyone has nostalgia for school and its days, and these memories are expressed in words such as pure, youth, love and passion. Campus sports fields, school buildings and rest areas of different sizes between them dominate most of these memories and are remembered differently by each individual.

To the designer, the “Chung-Ang University Centennial Memorial Hall” meant thinking about “space” that is able to contain parts of 100-year old memories of school members who exist in different forms i.e. the value of tangibility and intangibility. This was a dilemma for preservation and development, and also a concern to narrow the gap between ideas and reality.

Since its establishment in1918, Chung-Ang University has experienced remarkable growth for over a century, and the Centennial Memorial Hall, the symbol of a hopeful first step for a new century, should be a space that can link Chung-Ang University’s tradition and future.

By overcoming realistic difficulties such as having high density due to a steep slope and establishing complex relationships with existing buildings, it is hoped to be someone’s memory and nostalgia and the talk of the town as an ‘emotional space’, in terms of satisfaction in function and an emotional aspect after much time has passed.

Approaching the Centennial Memorial Hall as tangible and intangible values_ The concept of the Centennial Memorial Hall begins with three keywords: Level agreement, History and harmony, and Physical convergence.

Level agreement : Understanding the slope of Heukseok-dong

Alumni reminiscing the Heukseok-dong campus will recall the steep slope on the way to school. We provide a community space that can accommodate the various behaviors of members by creating assorted external spaces on the ‘slope’, a geographical characteristic of campus. The Centennial Memorial Hall starts from the square behind the library, interconnecting various levels from the main sports field to the rear gate square, thus making the students’ walking environment comfortable. Using the existing level difference of the site, accessibility was secured by making it possible to enter the building at three levels (levels of the library’s back-door, the sports field, and the rear gate square).

History and harmony : Harmony between the school’s tradition, history and the existing campus

In order to make it a building that meets Chung-Ang University’s philosophy of “creation and harmony”, the formative vocabulary corresponding to the height, size, and direction of surrounding buildings was reflected in it. And by matching the direction of the building with the professor’s research hall, law school building, etc. which constitute the rear gate square, and considering the distance and view between the neighboring buildings, it was designed as a building of creativity and harmony that will make new history of Chung-Ang University. In addition, the curves at the top of the ground were given formative changes according to the viewing direction, creating a new landscape.

Physical convergence : Physical harmony with surrounding buildings and environment.

Height and mass are the most basic characteristics that define the physical characteristics of a building. Since the campus consisting of a cluster of buildings should take into consideration both characteristics, the ‘Centennial Memorial Hall’ was planned to be a design in accordance with the height of surrounding buildings and to have a size that conforms to the flow of surrounding buildings. To accommodate the flow of the campus’ south-high-north-low topography, the north side facing the sports field is 9 stories, and the south side facing the lawn, 12 stories. The upper part of the building, which matches the flow of the surrounding building, is massive, and an atrium was placed in the center to create an organic space with natural light and fresh air.

The meaning of a Centennial Memorial Hall_ From a physical point of view, it is probably the largest single university in Korea. The true meaning of the Centennial Memorial Hall is that it is a “cornerstone of the re-leap toward the blue sky beyond the window, opening the future” of a University that is 100 years old; it is essentially a plan of action with a will to make it into the top 100 universities in the world and top 5 in Korea; it is the pride of all members of Chung-Ang University.

Prologue_ 누구에게나 학교와 학창시절에 대한 향수가 있으며, 그 추억은 순수, 청춘, 사랑, 열정 등의 단어로 표현되기도 한다. 캠퍼스의 운동장, 학교의 건물들과 그 사이의 크고 작은 휴게공간들은 그 추억의 대부분을 차지하고 있으며, 개개인에게 서로 다른 방식으로 기억되곤 한다.

설계자에게 중앙대학교 100주년 기념관의 의미는 서로 다른 형태로 존재하는 학교 구성원들의 100년간의 기억의 편린을 담아낼 수 있는 ‘공간’ 즉 유·무형의 가치에 대한 고민이었다. 이것은 보존과 개발에 대한 딜레마이자 관념과 현실의 괴리감의 간극을 줄이는 고민이기도 했다.

중앙대학교는 1918년 개교이래 1세기에 걸쳐 눈부신 성장을 거듭하여 왔고, 다시 새로운 한 세기의 희망찬 첫발걸음의 상징인 100주년 기념관은 중앙대학교의 전통과 미래를 이어 줄 수 있는 공간이어야 한다.

현실적으로 급한 경사로 인한 높은 밀도와 기존 건물들과의 복합적인 관계설정 등의 어려움을 극복하여 기능적 측면에서의 만족과 감성적 측면에서도 오랜 시간이 흐른 뒤에 모두에게 ‘감성공간(感性空間)’으로 회자되며 그 누군가의 추억과 향수가 되기를 희망한다.

100주년 기념관에 대한 유,무형의 가치로의 접근

100주년 기념관의 개념은 ‘Level agreement, History and harmony, Physical convergence’라는 세가지 키워드를 주제로 시작한다.

Level agreement: 흑석동의 경사지에 대한 이해

흑석동 캠퍼스를 추억하는 동문들은 급경사의 등굣길을 회상할 것이다. 캠퍼스 지형적 특성인 ‘경사지’에 다양한 외부공간을 만들어 구성원의 다양한 행태를 담을 수 있는 커뮤니티 공간을 제공했다. 100주년 기념관은 도서관 후면 광장에서 시작하여 대운동장을 지나 후문광장으로 이어지는 다양한 레벨을 상호 연결하여 학생들의 보행환경의 쾌적성을 확보하였다. 기존 대지의 레벨차를 활용하여 3개의 레벨(도서관 후문레벨, 운동장레벨, 후문광장레벨)에서 건물로의 진입이 가능하도록 하여 접근성을 확보하였다.

History and harmony: 학교의 전통과 역사성 그리고 기존 캠퍼스와의 조화

‘창조와 화합’이라는 중앙대학교의 이념에 맞는 건물이 되기 위해 주변건물의 높이와 크기 및 방향에 대응하는 조형어휘를 건물에 반영하였으며. 후문 광장을 구성하는 교수연구동, 법학관 등의 건물방향에 맞추고 인접한 건물과의 인동거리 및 조망을 고려하여 중앙대학교의 새로운 역사를 만드는 창조와 화합의 건물로 계획하였다. 아울러 지상부 입면의 커브는 보는 방향에 따라 다양한 조형적 변화를 주어 새로운 풍경이 되도록 하였다

Physical convergence: 주변 건물과의 환경과의 물리적인 조화

높이(Height)와 크기(Mass)는 건물의 물리적 특성을 정의내리는 가장 원초적인 특성이다. 여러 건물들의 군집으로 이루어지는 캠퍼스는 두 특성을 고려해야 하기 때문에 ‘100주년 기념관은’은 먼저 주변 건물의 높이를 고려하고 크기 또한 주변 건물의 흐름에 순응하는 디자인으로 계획되었으며, 북저남고(北底南高)인 캠퍼스 지형의 흐름에 순응하도록 운동장을 향한 북측부는 9층, 녹지대를 향한 남측부는 12층이 되도록 하였다. 주변 건물의 흐름에 맞춘 상층부는 거대한 덩어리감을 가지는데 이 중심에 아트리움(Atrium)을 두어 늘 자연광과 신선한 공기가 함께 하는 유기적 공간을 연출하였다.

100주년 기념관의 의미_물리적 측면에서 볼 때 아마 규모면에서는 국내 국내대학 중 단일 규모로는 최대일 것이다. 100주년 기념 진정한 의미는 개교100년을 맞이하는 중앙대의 ‘미래를 여는 창 저편 푸른 창공을 향한 재도약의 초석’이며,

‘세계100대 명문대학과 국내 TOP5’로의 도약을 위한 발전의지를 담은 실용적인 실천계획이라는 것이 100주년 기념관이 가지는 근본적인 의미이자 중앙대 모든 구성원의 자부심이 아닌가 생각한다.
