Hilltop Gallery locates on Yanshan Mountains bordering Beijing and Chengde, where has a perfect view to Jinshanling Great wall. With 2,600 floor area, the building not only acts as a normal gallery, but also has the functions of reception, dining and exhibition space for Phonenix Valley project.

The site of the gallery is at a saddle on the top of the mountain, we hoped to use the natural terrain and allow the building to grow in conformity with the mountain. “Leaning hills and taking advantage of the trend” is the principle we followed in this project. The concept of “?”(potential) itself is also a traditional Eastern philosophy. It is the thinking that ancient Chinese faced in the construction within nature.

The entire building naturally develops its entrance along the mountain and introduces visitors to the main exhibition space on the ground floor. Step into the building, the visitors could see the undulations of the roof, it forms a huge space drawing people’s attention to the high space connects the ground floor to the bottom floor, which is also the largest exhibition space in the museum. Super-scale installations and sculptures can be set here, and the generous space also offers possibilities for future salon activities. The loop from the ground floor to the bottom floor also allows people to experience the architectural space and art works in different dimensions and view.

The main space combines two ring-shaped exhibition spaces and a closed audio-visual room, which will be displayed for the Phoenix Valley project in the early stage and become a unique multimedia art space later. On the north side of the bottom floor is the cafe of the gallery, where people can sit down and enjoy coffee or light meals, while overlooking the north side of the lake, they can also go out into the outdoor garden. In addition to the exhibition and reception at ground floor, as well as cafe and office space at bottom floor, the top floor of the gallery is a reception area for VIP guests, which can be reached by elevator or an artistic spiral staircase. At the same time, in order to emphasize the distinguished experience of VIP guests, we designed a unique entrance on the top floor. A concrete box is placed “into” the curved roof, connecting the interior and exterior of the building, where VIP guests can enter the gallery through the bamboo boardwalk at the top of the hill. It is also possible to walk along the winding boardwalk to wander over the roof of the building and reach the large platform on the other side of the building. The process of climbing and excursions, combined with the undulating hyperbolic tile roof, is like the winding path leading to a hidden place in the traditional Chinese gardens. At the same time, it resonates with the touring process of Jinshanling Great Wall coincidentally. There is a natural connection between the top and bottom, interior and exterior, and space of the entire Hilltop Gallery, where all the boundaries of spaces are blurred.

The shape of roof is not only in consideration of the internal functional space and aesthetic thinking, but also been subjected to rainwater analysis and wind tunnel experiments. Optimal results have been obtained through deliberation of the digital model and the structural performance of the physical model. In the actual construction stage, the application of digital technology has enabled the precise positioning and construction of complex building structures and forms. Definitely, besides high-tech digital support, it was also quite important to use the most primitive manual work, such as the laying of the bamboo slabs on the roof boardwalk and the traditional terracotta on the roof. Localized material and construction make such a building belong to the digital era without losing the charm of traditional Chinese architecture. The design and construction of the Hilltop Gallery is another newer attempt to present digital design method in the Chinese context.

힐탑 갤러리 

힐탑 갤러리는 진산링(Jinshanling) 성벽과 완벽한 경치를 가진 옌산 산맥에 위치해 있다. 바닥면적이 2,600㎡인 일반적인 갤러리의 역할뿐만 아니라 포닉스 계곡(Phonenix Valley) 프로젝트의 리셉션, 식사, 전시공간 기능도 갖춘 곳이다.

갤러리는 산 정상에 위치해 있으며 자연지형을 이용하여 그 건물이 산에 맞게 성장할 수 있도록 하고 싶었다. “언덕을 기울이고 추세를 이용하는 것”은 이 프로젝트에서 우리가 따라온 원칙이다. 잠재력이라는 개념 또한 전통적인 동양 철학이다. 고대 중국인들이 자연 속에서 건설해야 하는 때에 직면했던 생각이다.

전체 건물은 자연스럽게 산을 따라 입구를 만들고 방문객들에게 1층의 주요 전시공간을 소개한다. 건물 안으로 들어가면 관람객들은 지붕의 울퉁불퉁한 모습을 볼 수 있으며, 이곳은 지하 층과 지상 층을 연결하는 거대한 공간으로 사람들의 관심을 끌 수 있는 곳이다. 이곳은 박물관에서 가장 큰 전시 공간이기도 하다. 초대 규모의 시설과 조각품을 설치할 수 있으며, 넓은 공간은 향후 살롱 활동을 위한 가능성을 제공한다. 지상 층에서 바닥 층으로의 순환은 또한 사람들이 건축 공간과 예술 작품을 다양한 차원으로 경험할 수 있게 한다.

주요 공간은 2개의 링 모양의 전시 공간과 닫힌 시청각실을 결합하여 피닉스 계곡 프로젝트 초기 단계에서 전시 기능을 하고 나중에는 독특한 멀티미디어 아트 공간이 된다. 아래 층의 북쪽에는 사람들이 앉아서 커피나 가벼운 식사를 즐길 수 있는 갤러리 카페가 있으며, 북쪽을 내려다 보는 야외 정원으로 나갈 수 있다. 1층 전시와 리셉션, 지하 층의 카페와 사무실 공간 외에도 갤러리의 꼭대기 층은 VIP 손님들을 위한 리셉션으로 엘리베이터나 예술적 나선형 계단을 통해 도달할 수 있다. 동시에 VIP 방문객들의 뛰어난 경험을 위해 최상층에 독특한 입구를 디자인했다. VIP 방문객들이 언덕 꼭대기에 있는 대나무 판자 산책로를 통해 갤러리에 들어갈 수 있도록 건물 내부와 외부를 연결하는 콘크리트 상자가 구부러진 지붕에 삽입되어 있다. 또한 건물의 지붕을 거닐며 건물의 반대편에 있는 큰 플랫폼에 도달하기 위해 구불구불한 판자 산책로를 따라 걷는 것도 가능하다. 울퉁불퉁한 쌍곡선 기와 지붕과 결합된 등산의 여정은 전통적인 중국 정원의 숨겨진 장소로 이어지는 구불구불한 길과 같다. 동시에, 그것은 우연히 진산링(Jinshanling) 만리장성의 관광에 반향을 일으킨다. 위쪽과 아래쪽, 내부와 외부, 그리고 공간의 모든 경계가 흐릿한 힐탑 갤러리의 공간 사이에는 자연스러운 연결이 있다.

지붕의 모양은 내부의 기능적인 공간과 미적 사고를 고려했을 뿐만 아니라 강수량 분석과 풍동 실험을 거쳤다. 디지털 모델의 심의와 모형의 구조적 성능을 통해 최적의 결과를 얻었다. 실제 건설 단계에서 디지털 기술의 적용으로 복잡한 건물 구조와 형태의 정확한 위치 및 구성이 가능해졌다. 첨단 디지털 지원 외에도, 지붕 판자 산책로에 대나무 널빤지를 깔고 지붕 위에 전통적인 테라코타를 놓는 것과 같은 가장 원시적인 수동 작업을 사용하는 것도 매우 중요했다. 현지화된 소재와 건축물은 중국 전통 건축물의 매력을 잃지 않고 디지털 시대에 속하게 한다. 힐탑 갤러리의 디자인과 건축은 중국의 맥락에서 디지털 디자인 방법을 제시하려는 새로운 시도다.
