Namdaemun Plaza and Underpass

Supporting role for the main character.

Namdaemun is the first national treasure of the Republic of Korea that has historically experienced twists and turns. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was the gateway to enter the Seoul fortress, and in modern times, tanks were the channel of traffic through Namdaemun, and now it acts like a symbolic statue surrounded by roads. The meaning of "people passing through Namdaemun and the stream of cities that follow" has changed from time to time, and modern Namdaemun has become a symbolic and historic treasure of Korea rather than a function of the past.

With the development of cars and roads, Namdaemun is surrounded by roads and cars and people's access becomes difficult. Across the street is the modern Namdaemun Market, which developed in Seonhyecheong and Sijeon Haengnang during the Joseon Dynasty, and the adjacent entrance to the site was a transportation island. There are tens of thousands of people passing through Namdaemun. It was built between the island and the walkway to create the square closest to Namdaemun. This square has a comfortable view of Namdaemun, and it must accommodate a large number of passageways that pass through it. Therefore, the plaza should be a plaza to highlight Namdaemun rather than have an active meaning in itself or express excessive formations. The space in an art gallery can be considered to be the same reason that art works are composed quietly and concisely. Namdaemun Plaza is a supporting role for the main character.

I used a bench and grass to stay in, so that I could look at Namdaemun. Namdaemun Market, located away from Namdaemun Gate, has a lot of traffic compared to the width of the street, so it has expanded the street to avoid interference. Although there is a road between Namdaemun and Namdaemun Plaza, it can be seen as an extension of the visual street towards Namdaemun beyond the road. The extension of the street consists of benches, lawns, terraced shelters, and underground walk entrances, where granite can fill the floor in patterns, sit back, look at Namdaemun, perform, gather, scatter, or pass through the city. It was important to give up the desire to be a leading actor and become a supporting actor who stood out and played the rest of the role faithfully It contains a minimal urban gesture that can stimulate the city's natural everyday activities rather than installing an artificial device.

남대문광장 및 지하보도

주연을 위한 조연

남대문은 역사적으로 우여곡절을 겪은 대한민국의 국보1호이다. 조선시대에는 서울성곽 안으로 들어오기 위한 관문이었고, 근대에는 전차가 남대문을 통과하는 교통의 통로였고, 현대에는 도로로 둘러싸인 상징적인 조각상과 같은 역할을 하고 있다. 남대문을 통과하는 사람들과 이어지는 도시의 흐름과 그 의미는 시대별로 달라졌고, 현대에는 그 기능을 한다기보다 도심의 상징적이고 역사적인 대한민국의 보물이다. 자동차와 도로가 발달하면서 남대문은 도로와 차들로 둘러싸이고 사람들의 접근은 어려워졌다. 그 길 건너에는 조선시대의 선혜청과 시전행랑에서 발달한 현대의 남대문시장이 있고 그 인접한 초입에는 교통섬이 위치해 있었다.

남대문을 바라보며 이곳을 지나다니는 통행인구는 몇만명이 될 정도이다. 이 교통섬을 메워 남대문에 가장 인접한 광장을 조성하였다. 이 광장은 남대문을 편히 바라볼 수 있고, 이곳을 지나는 많은 통행동선을 수용하여야 한다. 이는 자동차 위주의 교통섬에서 보행자 위주의 보행광장이 조성되는 셈이다. 따라서, 광장이 그 자체로서 적극적인 의미를 담거나 과도한 조형을 표현하기보다 남대문을 돋보이게 하기 위한 광장이어야 할 것이다. 미술작품이 돋보이게 하기 위해 미술관의 공간은 조용히 간결하게 구성되는 것과 같은 이치라고 볼 수 있다. 남대문광장은 주연을 위한 조연이다.

남대문의 바라봄, 이를 위한 최소한의 장치로 머무를 수 있는 벤치와 잔디를 사용하였다. 남대문과 떨어진 남대문 시장 방면에는 가로의 폭에 비해 통행량이 많아 이에 방해되지 않도록 가로를 확장하였다. 비록 남대문과 남대문광장 사이에는 도로가 놓여져 있지만 도로 너머에 남대문을 향한 시각적 가로의 확장이라고 볼 수 있다. 가로의 확장에는 기하학 패턴의 화강석 잔다듬의 표면들이 바닥을 채우고 간혹 앉거나, 쉬거나, 남대문을 바라보거나, 공연을 하거나 모이거나 흩어지거나 무심히 지나가거나 어떤 도시의 바쁜 일상의 행위들을 담아낼 수 있는 벤치, 잔디, 계단식 쉼터, 지하보도 입구 등으로 구성되어 있다.

주연이 되고자 하는 욕심을 버리고 주연이 돋보이고 그 남은 역할을 충실히 해내는 조연으로서의 광장이 되는 것이 중요했다. 인위적인 장치를 설치하기보다 도시의 자연스러운 일상의 행위들을 자극할 수 있는 최소한의 도시적인 제스쳐를 담았다.
