NEW MUSEUM FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Located in Perth’s Cultural Centre, the New Museum for Western Australia provides spaces for exhibitions and events, and new retail and dining opportunities for the Western Australian Museum, showcasing the State’s natural and cultural collections. Formed with renovated heritage-listed buildings and new volumes, the New Museum has been conceived as a framework to share the diverse stories of Western Australia-a State characterised by its extraordinary people and places and home to the oldest continuous culture on earth, an increasingly diverse, multicultural population, and a world biodiversity hotspot.

In the New Museum, heritage and contemporary structures complement each other. Preserved and revitalised buildings on site include the Old Gaol dating from the mid-19th Century, the Jubilee Building built in 1899, the original Art Gallery, built in 1908 and Hackett Hall-the State Library’s reading room built in 1913. New volumes wrap around these heritage buildings to create two core elements of the Museum: two intersecting circulation loops that offer a variety of curatorial possibilities, and a ‘City Room’-a public space at the Museum’s centre for cultural programs and daily activities.

The two loops link the existing buildings and new volumes to create multiple visitor routes that connect exhibition galleries, event and program spaces, and commercial leases. Visitors are encouraged to explore the Museum’s collection with different perspectives and create their own experience.

The addition of the new structures-including a large volume cantilevered over the Hackett Hall-has created a sheltered outdoor space, or the City Room. It is designed for public events, and accessible to everyone for daily gatherings. Visually connected to the two circulation loops inside the Museum, the City Room is the project’s focal point-at once inviting the public to explore the exhibitions, and encouraging Museum visitors to gather and exchange dialogues.

The preserved historical buildings evoke the site’s social and cultural history. Clad with perforated metal facades, the new rectangular volumes shine under sunlight and glow in the dark. The New Museum is a landmark building in Perth’s Cultural Centre-for the city and the State.

웨스턴오스트레일리아주 박물관 서호주(웨스턴오스트레일리아)는 이 지역만의 특별한 장소와 사람들로 오래 지속되고 있는 문화를 가지고 있으며, 다문화적인 인구와 세계 생물 다양성의 본거지인 곳이다. 웨스턴오스트레일리아주의 대표 도시인 퍼스(Perth)에 새로운 미술관이 문을 연다. 박물관은 퍼스문화중심지(Perths’ Cultural Centre)라는 주요 공공 공간 안에 자리 잡았다. 박물관은 웨스턴오스트레일리아주의 주립 자연과 문화적 소장품이 전시되며, 관련 행사가 진행되기도 한다. 또한, 새로운 상점과 음식점들이 박물관 안에 들어선다. 리노베이션된 문화유산 건축물과 새롭게 만들어진 구조체가 합쳐져 만들어진 이곳은 서호주의 다양한 이야기를 공유할 수 있는 틀이다.

건축물은 문화 유산과 현대 구조체가 서로를 보완하는 것처럼 보인다. 먼저, 문화유산 건물들은 19세기 중반에 지어진 오래된 교도소(Gaol)와 1899년에 지어진 쥬빌리(Jubilee) 건물, 1908년에 지어진 미술관, 1913년에 지어진 주립 도서관의 일부인 해켓홀(Hackett Hall)로 모두 원형이 그대로 보존되면서 박물관으로 재구성됐다.

새롭게 지어진 구조체는 박물관의 두 가지 핵심 요소가 고려되어 지어졌다. 이 두 가지 요소는 다양한 큐레이팅 가능성을 제공하고, 기존의 건물들을 연결하는 ‘교차 순환 동선’과 기존의 건축물을 둘러싸면서 문화 프로그램과 시민들에게 열려있는 박물관 중앙의 공공 공간인 ‘시티룸(City Room)’이다.

먼저, 교차 순환 동선은 기존 건물과 새로운 구조체를 연결하여 전시 갤러리, 행사와 프로그램 공간, 임대 상점들을 연결하는 ‘방문자들’을 위한 경로다. 방문객들은 이러한 동선을 따라 이를 통해 다양한 관점으로 박물관의 소장품을 탐색하고, 자신의 경험을 창조하게 된다.

‘시티룸’은 이 박물관에 숨겨진 야외 공간이다. 새롭게 지어진 구조체는 대형 캔틸레버로 해켓홀 건물을 가로지르는 형태다. 이 ‘시티룸’에서는 공개적인 행사가 열리기도 하며, 도시의 사람들이 자연스럽게 방문할 수 있도록 열린 공간이다. 박물관의 ‘교차 순환 동선’와 시각적으로 연결된 ‘시티룸’은 웨스턴오스트레일리아주 박물관에서 가장 중요한 공간이며, 방문을 유도하여 전시회를 관람하도록 만들고, 방문객이 모여서 대화를 나누도록 장려하는 장소다.

보존된 역사적 건물들은 서호주의 사회 문화적 역사를 환기(喚起)시키고, 천공판 입면을 가진 새로운 구조체는 햇빛과 어둠 속에서도 빛나며 존재감을 드러낸다. 이 새로운 박물관은 퍼스문화중심지의 랜드마크이자, 도시와 웨스턴오스트레일리아주를 대표하는 건물이 될 것이다.
