On the Neighborhood Nogani-gol Village was a farm village located across the Namdaecheon Stream at the old town of Gangneung, which has the natural landscape as it is to date. In the 1980s, This village was transformed into a residential site along with the opening of a city-planned thoroughfare that filled up the original rice field. Afterwards, it became backward in the urban center as a new residential town was developed. As the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games was held in 2018, a new underground KTX railroad was constructed and the original railroad of Gangneung has become the present Wolhwa Street. The project site is located around here, and across the hill is the Noam Tunnel that keeps the distressed memories of the Korean War. Located around the middle of the small hill sloped towards the west, the site keeps the memories of the time-honored landscape of Nogani-gol Village running along the north-south axis. At this neighborhood which has been run down for almost 30 years, even where no decent restaurant has existed, we came to design none other than a sushi restaurant.

On Topography and Layout Given the mid-hill road as the main access, this project was to create a landscape with the low hill taken as the background by connecting the building to the public parking lot below. Utilizing the topography from the main road at the east to the parking lot, we made three masses articulated to flow along the landform so as to utilize the topography as it is and express its flow. However, due to the client's budget condition we inevitably had to reduce the area into the scale which enables only one mass, so as to supplement the lack of space with a circulation that connects the upper road and the lower parking lot.

The floor plan of Sushi Hu as a sushi restaurant consists only of the bar table where the cook makes and provides sushi for customers, the space for group customers, the tables for general customers, a separate kitchen to be used for cooking, and the toilet. The separate space for group customers was defined by the wooden partitions and the one-step-lower floor, and positioned where it is most visible from the main road, the Nogani-gil Street. The other tables were laid out where customers could see the panorama of Daegwallyeong Pass through the horizontal band of windows. The interior was finished with Euro-formed exposed concrete without any separate finish, and the wall connected to the bar table was made of wood to create a color of warmth with low color temperature to create a space of mildness.

Massing in Harmony with the Hill All the mass of Sushi Hu was made in a sculptural way just by shaping a white mass like a rice cake, cutting the roof shape slantly considering the snow heaped in the winter, creating two different fenestrations through which to see the four seasons of Daegwallyeong Pass, and making a sheltered access to the sushi restaurant from the northeastern main road. Although this is a small floor-plan, the oblique interior space under the slanted roof is an invisible device to reduce the sense of narrowness for customers.

동네 이야기 노가니골은 예전에는 자연지형을 고스란히 간직하고 있는 강릉 구도심 남대천 건너의 농촌이었다. 1980년대 도시계획도로가 논을 메워 개설되면서 주거지로 만들어졌고 그 후 새로운 택지가 개발되면서 도심에서 낙후된 곳이 되어버렸다. 2018 평창동계올림픽 개최 후 강릉의 기존 철길이 KTX로 지하화되면서 철길은 월화거리가 되었다. 6.25전쟁의 아픔을 간직하고 있는 노암터널의 언덕 너머에 위치한 대지는 서편으로 경사진 작은 언덕 중간쯤에 위치하고 있어 남북으로 형성된 노가니골의 오래된 지형의 기억을 간직한 부지이다. 30년 가까이 낙후되어있던, 그 동안 변변한 음식점 하나 없던 동네에 스시집을 디자인하게 되었다.

지형과 배치이야기 언덕 중간의 도로가 주도로이지만 아래의 공공주차장과 연계된다면 건축물이 언덕 중간에 자리하게 된다. 낮은 언덕을 배경으로 삼아 풍경을 만드는 작업인 것이다. 동측의 주도로에서 공용주차장까지의 지형을 이용해 3개의 매스로 분절하여 지형을 따라 흐르게 하였다. 이는 대지를 있는 그대로 활용하고 지형의 흐름을 표현하는 작업을 가능하게 한다. 그러나 건축주의 경제적 사정으로 인해서 면적의 축소가 불가피해졌고 단 하나의 매스를 가질 수 밖에 없는 면적으로 줄어들었지만 외부공간에서 상부의 도로와 하부의 공용주차장을 연결하는 동선을 통해서 그 단점을 보완하였다.

스시집을 위한 평면 만들기 스시집의 특성상 초밥을 만들어 손님에게 제공하는 바 테이블, 단체 손님을 위한 공간과 일반 손님들을 위한 테이블, 조리가 가능한 별도의 주방 그리고 화장실 이것이 스시후 평면의 전부다. 단체 손님을 위한 별도의 공간은 목재 칸막이와 한단 낮은 바닥의 레벨 차이로 구획하고 노가니길 주도로에서 가장 잘 보이도록 하였다. 다른 테이블들은 수평의 긴 창을 통해서 대관령 전경을 볼 수 있도록 하였다. 별도의 내부 마감없이 유로폼노출로 내부를 마감하였고, 바 테이블과 연결된 벽체는 나무를 사용하여 따뜻한 색채를 만들고 낮은 색온도로 따스한 공간을 조성하였다.

언덕에 어울리는 덩어리 만들기 스시후는 하얀 백설기 같은 매스 덩어리와 겨울철 눈 내리는 날을 고려한 경사진 지붕, 대관령의 사계절을 바라볼 수 있는 두 개의 다른 창, 그리고 동북의 주도로에서 스시집으로 진입하는, 비를 막아주는 출입구 만들기가 전부이다. 작은 평면이지만, 경사진 내부공간으로 만들어진 높은 층고를 통해 협소감을 줄였다. 이는 보이지 않은 장치이기도 하다.
