Zuidplein Theater forms part of Hart van Zuid, a region-wide public-private partnership development focused around the Zuidplein and the Ahoy events complex. The development will radically change the character of the area, turning it into an inviting destination. Following on from Zwemcentrum Rotterdam(swimming pool), the theater is the second project completed in Hart van Zuid. The central location, beside the bus and metro stations, easily attracts passersby to take a peek inside, making art and culture accessible to a wider audience.
Due to noise considerations, the two auditoriums of Zuidplein Theater are positioned on the metro side, furthest away from the residential areas. Here, the building appears enclosed and intimate with a sturdy masonry facade accented by distinctive vertical niches. By contrast, a semi-transparent anodised aluminium veil drapes delicately over the entrance. By day, the semi-open facade creates a beautiful play of light inside, and by night, the facade illuminates from within to highlight the inviting entrance. The high lobby forms the heart of the building. As a ‘living room’ for Rotterdam-Zuid, the lobby has an extra stage that hosts popular activities such as children’s performances and other community-focused initiatives, bands and DJs and exhibitions.
Designed by De Zwarte Hond in collaboration with BURO M2R, the interior fits seamlessly with the architecture. The transparency and curved form of the aluminium voile are reflected in various interior elements. The flexible and mobile bespoke furniture designed by BURO M2R enables spaces to be configured in different ways. Steel furniture and paneling lend the interior a bold look, while, at the same time, red upholstery and floors add the distinctive warmth of a theater.
The 600-seat main auditorium has two distinctive features. The Rotterdam-based architecture practice Studio RAP designed an acoustic wall that seemingly embraces the audience and performing artists in one fluid gesture. The design is crafted from 6,000 different triangular aluminium composite panels – an unexpected choice of material for a theater. Algorithms calculated the positioning of the triangular panels to create excellent acoustics in the theater without the need for soundproofing materials.
What’s also unique is how the auditorium adapts to standing concerts. Conventionally, a sliding tribune – which often has less comfortable seating – would be removed to make space for a standing event. At Zuidplein Theater, the stage – whose surface area exceeds the hall – can easily be converted into a multipurpose space that fits a maximum of 1,000 standing or dancing visitors. This means more comfortable fixed seating can be installed in the auditorium. The ground floor and balcony can be separated from the space using a moveable wall.
신비로운 달팽이 패턴을 가진 로테르담의 극장, 주이드플레인 극장
주이드플레인 극장은 주이드플레인(Zuidplein)과 아호이(Ahoy) 이벤트 단지를 중심으로 하는 지역 전체의 공공-민간 파트너십 개발인 하트 반 주이드의 일부다. 이 개발은 지역의 성격을 근본적으로 바꾸어 매력적인 공간으로 만드는 것으로, 로테르담 수영센터(Zwemcentrum Rotterdam)에 이어 이 극장은 하트 반 주이드에서 완성한 두 번째 프로젝트다. 버스정류장과 지하철 역이 근처에 있고, 지역의 중앙에 위치한 이곳은 지나가는 사람들을 쉽게 끌어 들여 내부를 들여다보게 하고 더 많은 사람이 예술과 문화에 접근할 수 있도록 계획됐다.
소음을 고려하여 주이드플레인 극장의 2개의 강당은 주거 지역에서 가장 멀리 떨어진 지하철 역 쪽에 있다. 건물은 독특한 수직 벽과 견고한 석조 외관으로 둘러싸여 있다. 대조적으로, 반투명의 산화 처리된 알루미늄 베일은 입구를 섬세하게 덮는다. 낮에는 반 개방형 외관이 내부에서 아름다운 빛을 연출하고, 밤에는 외관이 내부에 비추어 눈길을 끄는 입구를 강조한다. 높은 로비는 건물의 중심을 형성한다. 로테르담-주이드의 “거실”격인 로비에는 어린이 공연 및 기타 커뮤니티 중심 행사, 밴드, 디제잉 및 전시회 같은 인기있는 활동을 위한 무대가 있다.
드 즈바르트 혼드가 BURO M2R과 공동으로 디자인한 인테리어는 건축과 완벽하게 어울린다. 알루미늄 보일의 투명성과 곡선 형태는 다양한 내부 요소에 반영된다. BURO M2R이 설계한 유연하고 이동 가능한 맞춤형 가구는 공간을 다양한 방식으로 구성할 수 있게 한다. 철재 가구와 패널은 내부를 대담하게 보이게 하는 동시에 붉은색 벽과 바닥은 극장의 독특한 따뜻함을 더한다.
600석 규모의 메인 강당에는 두 가지 특징이 있다. 로테르담에 기반을 둔 건축 사무소 Studio RAP는 청중과 아티스트를 한 번의 유연한 제스처로 포용하는 듯한 음향 벽을 설계했다. 이 디자인은 6,000개의 서로 다른 삼각형 알루미늄 복합 패널로 제작되어 극장용으로 잘 쓰이지 않는 소재를 선택했다. 알고리즘은 방음 재료 없이도 극장에서 우수한 음향을 생성하기 위해 삼각형 패널의 위치를 계산했다.
또 한 가지 독특한 점은 강당이 스탠딩 콘서트에 대응하는 방식이다. 일반적으로 좌석이 다소 불편한 슬라이딩 관람석은 스탠딩 이벤트를 위한 공간을 만들기 위해 제거됐다. 주이드플레인 극장에서는 객석 면적이 홀의 규모를 초과하는 무대를 최대 1,000명의 입석 또는 춤추는 관람객을 수용할 수 있는 다목적 공간으로 쉽게 전환할 수 있다. 이는 더 편안한 고정 좌석을 강당에 설치할 수 있음을 의미한다. 이동 벽을 사용하여 1층과 발코니를 공간에서 분리할 수 있다.
