The US Olympic and Paralympic Museum is a tribute to the Olympic and Paralympic movements with Team USA athletes at the center of the experience. The building features galleries, a state-of-the-art theater, event space, and cafe. Inspired by the energy and grace of the Team USA athletes and the organization’s inclusive values, the building’s dynamic spiraling form allows visitors to descend the galleries in one continuous path. This main organization structure enables the museum to rank amongst the most accessible museums in the world, ensuring visitors with and without disabilities can smoothly share the same common experience. A terraced hardscape plaza is at the heart of the museum complex, cradled by the museum building to the south and the cafe to the north. The plaza frames a postcard view of Pikes Peak and the Rocky Mountains beyond. With integrated amphitheater seating for 230 people, the plaza is able to host outdoor events throughout the seasons, from the winter games through the summer games.
A skylight illuminates the atrium, while perforated GFRG (Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum) screens provide views from the lobby. Four balconies at varying heights overlooking the atrium re-orient visitors to this central space as they move through the galleries.
The gallery space is as overlapping petals that wrap around the central atrium. Clerestory lighting at the seams between these petals provides soft daylight emanating from the central atrium space, terminating at vertical windows at the building’s perimeter. This lighting strategy doubles as wayfinding, orienting visitors back to the atrium, and situating them along a trajectory that moves through the galleries, which feature immersive interactive exhibitions designed by Gallagher Associates.
The theater can host a 130-person audience. Two rows of seats are removable to accommodate a max of 26 wheelchairs, enabling the potential for a full Paralympic hockey team to sit together.
The event space features a panoramic view spanning from downtown Colorado Springs to the Rocky Mountains. Space can also open up to an adjoining outdoor terrace. Café and Education Room. The multi-functional board room features an adjacent outdoor terrace and a floor-to-ceiling window framing a view of the Rocky Mountains. Southwest Downtown Pedestrian Bridge: The DS+R design team also designed a new pedestrian bridge. over an active railyard to connect the museum complex to America the Beautiful Park. The bridge extends an existing bike network, connecting downtown to the Midland Trail.
방문객을 배려한 하나의 동선과 운동의 역동성이 담긴 박물관, 미국 올림픽과 패럴림픽 박물관
미국 올림픽과 패럴림픽 박물관은 미국 국가대표 선수들의 경험을 기념하는 공간으로, 갤러리, 최첨단 극장, 이벤트 공간이 있다. 선수들의 에너지와 우아함과 조직의 포용적 가치에서 영감을 받아 역동적인 나선형 형태로 지어진 이 건물은 방문객이 하나로 이어진 길을 따라 갤러리로 내려갈 수 있게 되어있다. 이 구조로 인해 박물관은 전 세계에서 가장 이용하기 쉬운 박물관 중 하나로 손꼽혔고 장애의 유무와 상관없이 방문객은 누구나 동일한 경험을 원활하게 할 수 있게 된다. 박물관 단지의 중심에는 테라스 형태의 하드 스케이프 광장이 있고 남쪽에는 박물관 건물이, 북쪽에는 카페가 있다. 플라자의 창에서 보이는 파이크스 피크와 그 너머의 록키 산맥이 펼쳐진다. 230명을 수용할 수 있는 좌석을 갖춘 원형 경기장에서는 겨울 스포츠경기부터 여름 스포츠경기까지 계절 내내 야외 행사를 개최할 수 있다.
채광창을 통해 들어오는 빛은 12m 높이의 아트리움을 비추고 천공 GFRG(Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum) 스크린은 로비에서의 전망을 보여준다. 아트리움이 내려다 보이는 다양한 높이의 네 개의 발코니는 방문객이 갤러리를 지날 때 중앙 공간으로 방향을 바꿔준다.
중앙 아트리움은 여러 개의 판이 겹치는 구조로 설계된 전시 공간이다. 판 사이사이에 있는 클리어스토리 조명은 부드러운 빛을 내며 중앙 아트리움 공간에서부터 건물 주변의 수직 창까지 비춰준다. 이 조명은 방문자에게 아트리움으로 되돌아가는 길을 알려주며 갤러리를 통해 이동한 경로를 따라 다시 아트리움으로 향하게 하는 표지판의 기능을 한다.
극장은 130명을 수용할 수 있는 공간으로, 최대 26개의 휠체어를 수용할 수 있어 패럴림픽 하키 팀도 함께 앉을 수 있다. 이벤트 공간에서는 콜로라도 스프링스 시내에서부터 록키 산맥에 이르는 탁 트인 전망을 감상할 수 있다.
카페의 지붕은 계절의 변화를 나타내는 식물들이 심어져 있다. 다기능 회의실은 넓은 야외 테라스와 연결되며, 록키 산맥이 보이는 큰 창문을 가지고 있는 공간이다. 뿐만 아니라, 박물관 단지는 아메리카 뷰티풀파크(America the Beautiful Park)와 연결되는 보행자 다리도 세워져서 시내에서 쉽게 왔다갔다 할 수 있다.
