DESERT X ALULA VISITOR CENTRE

Some of the most prevalent structures found everywhere around Al Ula are walled date plantations, usually rectangular in shape with large, centrally aligned gates. With palm tree crowns peaking above the sand coloured walls, we can imagine the refreshing shade within, a place where one could rest from the surrounding arid desert. Not far from Al Ula is Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rock-cut monumental tombs. The most significant of these are decorated in an eclectic weave of architectural styles in precisely cut sandstone columns, arches and cornices: fine examples of delicate design and incredible craftsmanship. Interior space is usually a clear, carved void defined by the mass of cut stone – and by Meda’in Saleh’s siq there is an intriguing traditional dining hall lined by three benches for holding annual banquets.

The Visitor Centre is a simple square building, carefully isolated at the entrance of the Hidden Canyon welcoming visitors for the first Desert X Al Ula exhibition: it offers basic amenities such as an information centre and a café as well as a generously shaded courtyard and a viewing deck outside. It is a place to rest and find shelter in the open desert, while its courtyard frames views into the sky and the magnificent landscape. The few, precisely located windows create various focal points up and down the canyon and increase the contrast between the domestic and the unlimited: an expression of our scale and our relationship with nature.

The circular roof opening creates a particular atmosphere - a perfect shape framing the rocks and the sky. The two entrances into the courtyard are viewing axis extended by the transparent doors into the information centre and the café: the opposing windows in each of those spaces giving a framed view back into the desert. The moment one enters the apparently enclosed courtyard is the very moment when one sees through the building – while it’s scale and depth is made ambiguous, there is an immediate spatial and functional clarity.

The floorplan is symmetric and nondirectional with each of the two main public spaces accessed from the centre of each side of the courtyard; facilities such as restrooms, staff and storage are located in the corner diagonal to the courtyard. The metric of the building is strict and reoccurring in all dimensions of its spaces and openings: its structural grid is simple, and the uniformly dimensioned spaces allow for the reorganising of the structure for a future change of use.

뜨거운 사막의 오아시스, 데저트 엑스 알울라 방문자 센터 사우디 알울라

주변에서 발견되는 가장 보편적인 건축구조 중 일부는 벽으로 둘러싸인 대추야자 농장으로, 일반적으로 중앙에 정렬된 큰 문이 있는 직사각형 모양이다. 모래색 벽 위로 솟은 야자수 왕관을 보며 사람들은 주변의 건조한 사막에서 휴식을 취할 수 있는 시원한 그늘을 상상하게 된다. 알울라에서 멀지 않은 곳에 사우디아라비아 최초의 유네스코 세계문화유산, 바위를 깎아 만든 묘가 있는 헤그라가 있다. 이곳은 정밀하게 절단된 사암 기둥, 섬세한 디자인과 놀라운 장인 정신의 아치 및 처마 장식 등 절충된 건축 스타일로 장식되어 있다. 내부 공간은 절단된 석재 매스로 정의되는 깨끗하게 조각된 빈 공간이다.

방문자 센터는 숨겨진 협곡 입구에서 조심스럽게 격리된 단순한 정사각형 건물로 안내 센터, 카페, 그늘을 제공하는 안뜰, 외부 전망대 등 기본 편의 시설을 제공한다. 탁 트인 사막에서 휴식을 취할 수 있는 쉼터가 되는 곳으로 안뜰에서는 하늘을 포함한 장엄한 풍경을 조망할 수 있다. 정밀하게 위치한 몇 개의 개구부는 협곡 위아래로 다양한 초점을 만든다. 이는 사람의 규모와 자연 사이의 관계의 표현이다.

크게 열려 있는 원형 지붕은 암석과 하늘을 액자 속에 담는 완벽한 형태로, 특별한 분위기를 조성한다. 안뜰로 이어지는 두 개의 입구는 정보 센터와 카페로 연결되는 투명한 문을 통해 시야의 축을 확장한다. 각 공간의 반대편 창은 다시 사막이 보이는 액자 속 전망을 제공한다. 폐쇄된 듯 보이는 안뜰에 들어서면 건물을 꿰뚫어볼 수 있다. 건물의 규모와 깊이는 모호하지만 즉각적인 공간적, 기능적 명확성이 존재한다.

평면계획은 안뜰의 양쪽 중앙에서 접근할 수 있는 두 개의 주요 공공 공간과 대칭이며 방향성이 존재하지는 않는다. 화장실, 직원 휴게실, 창고와 같은 시설은 안뜰의 대각선 모서리에 위치한다. 건물의 척도는 엄격하며 공간과 개구부 등 모든 차원에서 반복적이다. 구조적 격자가 단순하고, 균일한 크기의 공간은 향후 용도 변경을 위해 구조를 재구성하는 것도 가능하다.
