LA MAISON DEL’ÌLE AUX OISEAUX

In 2016, the Lausanne ornithology club (COL: Cercle Ornithologique de Lausanne) acquired a small cabin facing Île aux Oiseaux (“Bird Island”) at Préverenges, an artificial biotope reclaimed from the lake in 2001 and now classified as an official nature reserve. Its location is connected to the natural estuary of the Venoge, a river that flows into Lake Geneva. This is one of the main stopping places for migratory waders in Switzerland, primarily due to its unique geographic situation in the axis of the Rhône valley.
The architecture of the bird island house draws inspiration from the elegance of the bird world (twig, nest, feather). Its structure is composed of solid vertical boards, assembled without glue, that have been bent to form a lacework structure of ogival elements suggesting the tension and delicacy of a nest. The ogival boards that support the roof run across the building, ornamenting the internal ceiling. Inside, visitors find a basic, warm space, covered with a light-coloured natural pine wood that contrasts with the darker framework of the building.
The plan of the new pavilion is simple, comprising a single room divided by a central functional hub which organises the space into two distinct but open sections. This functional box, like a wooden house-within-a-house, contains the kitchen and the toilets. It is aligned with the large round window and can be seen from the exterior. Two long wooden shelf units run along the sidewalls of the building, aligned with the direction of entrance, contain the Maison de l’Île’s educational displays. The public enters via the lakeside ramp, protected by the wide roof overhang. On the rear façade a service entrance and a smaller round window echo the main façade.
The roof structure also has specially-designed small horizontal slits on the outside - the entrances to bat roosting boxes, incorporated within the roof: in this way the building itself is also providing homes where different species can take shelter and reproduce.
The large round window is an eye-catching feature on the riverside walk, drawing visitors’ gaze towards the bird island house. It is like a lens reflecting the world around it – reminiscent of a camera obscura or a nesting box. This glass “eye” gives this new public facility a strong identity and an attractive presence. As night falls the round window lights up, revealing the pavilion’s interior.
The bird island and the bird island house form a coherent ensemble, complementing each other in a perfect dialogue. The dark shade of the façade, contrasting with its structure, evokes the subtle shades of the birds’ plumage while harmonising perfectly with the tonalities of the little chalets already existing along the lakeside and the Scots pines.

자연의 일부가 되어 새를 관찰하는 카메라, 버드 아일랜드의 오두막
2016년에 로잔 조류학 클럽(COL: Cercle Ornithologique de Lausanne)은 2001년 호수에서 매립되어 현재 공식 자연 보호 구역으로 분류되는 인공 비오톱인 스위스 프리베렝게스(Préverenges)에서 릴레 오 와주(Île aux Oiseaux, “새 섬”)를 마주 보고 있는 작은 오두막을 구입했다. 오두막의 위치는 제네바 호수로 흘러드는 강인 베노쥬(Venoge)의 어귀와 연결되어 있다. 이곳은 론(Rhône) 계곡의 축에 있는 독특한 지리적 상황으로 인해 스위스의 철새를 위한 주요 기착지 중 하나이다.
버드 아일랜드의 방문자 센터 디자인은 조류(잔가지, 둥지, 깃털)의 우아함에서 영감을 얻었다. 구조는 접착제 없이 조립된 단단한 수직 판자로 구성되어 있으며, 둥지의 장력과 섬세함을 암시하는 맞보가 레이스 구조를 형성하도록 구부러져 있다. 지붕을 지지하는 합량의 판자가 건물 전체를 가로질러 내부 천장을 장식한다. 내부로 들어온 방문객은 건물의 어두운 골조와 대조되는 밝은 색상의 천연 소나무로 덮인 심플하고 따뜻한 공간을 마주한다.
파빌리온의 평면은 단순하며 중앙 기능적인 허브가 하나의 공간을 두 개의 개방된 구획으로 분할하여 구성한다. 집 안의 집과 같은 이 기능적인 공간에는 주방과 화장실이 있으며, 큰 원형 창과 일직선으로 배치되어 외부에서 내부를 들여다볼 수 있다. 건물의 측면 벽을 따라 입구 방향과 일치하는 두 개의 긴 목재 선반 유닛이 오두막의 교육용 디스플레이를 전시한다. 대중은 넓은 지붕 돌출부로 보호되는 호숫가 경사로를 통해 입장할 수 있다. 후면 파사드에는 부출입구가 있으며, 작은 원형 창은 메인 파사드를 모방한다.
지붕 구조 외부에는 특별히 설계된 작고 가느다란 수평 틈새가 있다. 지붕에 포함된 박쥐 둥지 상자의 입구이다. 이러한 방식으로 건물 자체는 다른 종들이 피난처를 갖고 번식할 수 있는 안식처를 제공한다.
커다란 둥근 창문은 강변 산책로의 눈길을 사로잡는 요소로, 방문객들의 시선을 새의 섬의 주택으로 끌어들인다. 이는 카메라 박스 또는 새집을 연상시키며, 주변 세계를 반영하는 렌즈와 같다. 유리로 된 “눈”은 새로운 공공시설에 강력한 아이덴티티와 매력적인 존재감을 부여한다. 어둠이 내리면 둥근 창문에 불이 들어오면서 파빌리온의 내부를 드러낸다.
새의 섬과 오두막은 하나의 일관된 앙상블을 형성하여 완벽한 대화를 통해 서로를 보완한다. 구조와 대조되는 파사드의 어두운 음영은 새 깃털의 미묘한 음영을 연상시키는 동시에 호숫가와 스코틀랜드 소나무를 따라 자리하는 주변 주택들의 색조와 완벽하게 조화를 이룬다.
