TIRPITZ, a 'Hidden Museum' on Danish West Coast_BIG

The new TIRPITZ transforms and expands a historic German WWII bunker into a groundbreaking cultural complex comprising four exhibitions within a single structure, seamlessly embedded into the protected shorelands of Blavand in western Denmark. The construction of the 2,800 m2 ’invisible museum’ expected to attract around 100,000 visitors annually.

As an antithesis to the heavy volume of the WWII bunker, the museum appears subtly as the intersection between a series of precise cuts into the landscape. Contrary to the hefty and intrusive regelbau construction of the original artillery fortress - simply designed as an immense concrete block - the new TIRPITZ finely cuts into the dune and camouflages with the landscape.

 

'The architecture of the TIRPITZ is the antithesis to the WWII bunker. The heavy hermetic object is countered by the inviting lightness and openness of the new museum. The galleries are integrated into the dunes like an open oasis in the sand - a sharp contrast to the Nazi fortress' concrete monolith. The surrounding heath-lined pathways cut into the dunes from all sides descending to meet in a central clearing, bringing daylight and air into the heart of the complex. The bunker remains the only landmark of a not so distant dark heritage that upon close inspection marks the entrance to a new cultural meeting place." _Bjarke Ingels, Founding Partner, BIG.

Upon arrival, the visitors will first see the bunker and as they approach, see the fine cuts and paths leading towards the center of the museum complex. The central courtyard allows access into the four underground gallery spaces that have an abundance of daylight even though they are literally carved into the sand. The exhibitions, designed by Dutch agency Tinker Imagineers showcase permanent and temporary themed experiences. Every gallery has its own rhythm, beating in sync with its storyline: high and low, night and day, good and bad, hot and cold, the passing of time.

From the sunken galleries, visitors are able to walk into the historic bunker, which grounds the tale of an impressive war machine. In the dark visitors can play with light and activate shadow plays that reveal how the bunker should have functioned.

The building consists of four main materials and elements which are also found in the existing structures and natural landscape of the area - concrete, steel, glass and wood. The walls of the exhibition rooms are made of concrete cast onsite, supporting the landscape and carrying the fascinating roof decks that cantilever out 36 m. The largest roof deck weighs about 1.090 ton and the complex roof structure is engineered by Swiss Luchinger+Meyer. The main interior materials utilized throughout the gallery spaces are wood and hot rolled steel which is applied to all the interior walls. 6m tall glass panels face the outdoor courtyard, allowing natural daylight into the four exhibition spaces.

새로운 TIRPITZ 는 세계 2차 대전 당시 독일군이 썼었던 벙커를 획기적인 문화 단지로 변모시켰다. 이 건물은 하나의 구조물에 4개의 전시관으로 구성되어 있으며 덴마크 서부에 위치한 Blavand 지방 해안가에 깔끔하게 끼워져 있다. 2,800㎡ 크기의 거의 보이지 않는 박물관은 매년 100,000 명의 방문객을 유치할 것으로 예상된다.

거대한 규모의 세계 2차 대전 벙커에 반대하는 모습으로 박물관은 대지를 예리하게 자른 틈 사이의 교차점으로 미묘하게 드러난다. 기존 대포 요새의 거대하고 거슬리는 표준 시공방식(단순히 거대한 콘크리트 덩어리를 설계하는 방식)에 반대하여 새로운 TIRPITZ는 모래언덕을 예리하게 잘라내어 주변환경 속에 그 모습을 감추었다.

 

"TIRPITZ은 세계 2차대전 벙커와 다른 모습이다. 거대한 밀폐 구조물은 새로운 박물관으로 들어오는 빛과 개구부로 대응된다. 갤러리들은 사막의 오아이스처럼 모래언덕 속으로 융합된다. - 나치 요새의 콘크리트 덩어리와 예리하게 대비된다. 주변의 통로들은 사방에서부터 모래언덕으로 이어져있으며 그 길은 중앙으로 내려와 만나게 되고 단지의 중심으로 빛과 공기를 가져다 준다. 벙커는 그 속을 자세히 들여다 보면 새로운 문화 만남의 장소로 통하는 입구가 새겨진 그리 멀지 않은 거리의 어두운 문화유산의 유일한 랜드마크가 된다." _Bjarke Ingels, BIG 설립자

방문객들이 도착하게 되면 처음 벙커를 보게 될 것이다. 그리고 다가갈수록 박물관 중심으로 향하는 깔끔한 단면과 길을 찾을 수 있게 될 것이다. 중앙 정원에서는 4개의 지하 갤러리 공간으로 들어갈 수 있는 입구가 있다. 갤러리 공간은 실제적으로는 모래 속에 묻혀 있지만 충분한 햇빛이 들어오고 있다. 독일 기업 Tinker Imagineers이 설계한 전시관에서는 일회성이나 영구적인 주제를 가지고 전시를 한다. 각각의 갤러리는 각 주제에 따라 그 자신만의 리듬과 박자를 가지고 있다: 높고 낮음, 밤과 낮, 좋음과 나쁨, 뜨거움과 차가움, 시간의 흐름.

선큰 갤러리에서는 방문객들이 역사적 벙커로 걸어들어갈 수 있다. 그 벙커 안에는 인상적인 전쟁 기계의 이야기가 숨어있다. 어둠속에서 방문객들은 빛과 함께 놀 수 있고 벙커가 어떤 역할을 수행해야하는지 보여주는 그림자 놀이를 할 수도 있다.

빌딩은 콘크리트, 강철, 유리, 그리고 목재 4개의 재료로 구성되어 있으며 이 재료들은 주위 건물과 주변 지역에서 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 전시장 벽체는 현장 타설 콘크리트로 제작되었으며 상부 조경과 36m 길이의 캔틸레버 옥상 데크를 지지하고 있다. 가장 무거운 옥상데크 무게는 약 1.090톤 이며 복잡한 옥상 구조물은 Swiss Luchinger+Meyer가 제작했다. 갤러리 공간 전체에 주로 사용되었던 실내 인테리어 재료는 목재와 열간압연 강재이다. 열간압연 강재는 모든 실내 벽체에 적용되었다. 6m 높이의 유리 패널은 외부 중정과 맞닿아 있으며 4개의 전시관에 자연광이 들어오도록 한다.
