THE GREEN ARCH - BELGIAN PAVILIONat EXPO 2020 DUBAI

 

The Belgian pavilion is called “The Green Arch”, as it combines intensive greenery and futuristic design in solid wood. The pavilion aims to be exemplary in terms of sustainable development. It is an ode to regenerative circular economy, to biobased and geosourced materials, to the integration of bioclimatic rules and renewable energies, as well as to the preservation of biodiversity and nature. Located in the “Mobility District”, the architectural concept of the Belgian pavilion is to offer visitors the largest shaded and naturally ventilated agora in the axis of the prevailing west-east winds of Dubai. Its programming is placed higher up so that a maximum of the groundfloor space is free to use for the public.

 

This means that “The Green Arch” is based on a “bridge-building”, creating an immense vault with double curvature between its two pillars. This curvaceous vault is generated from a universal mathematical minimum surface called “hyperbolic paraboloid”. This paraboloid is built in CLT - Cross Laminated Timber - with more than 5.5 linear kilometers of spruce louvers generating a giant wooden Mashrabiya - which by rotating of 180 degrees - envelops the entire project to better protect it from solar radiation.

 

The agora was designed as “shortcut”, directly linking the “Mobility District” and the “Sustainability District” by crossing the pavilion. The street furniture of the public spaces on the ground floor was entirely made of 3D-printed white concrete. The “BeBizz” Business Center and its VIP Lounge also offer a high degree of flexibility in amenities to host business talks and international dialogues, to connect minds and create the desirable future. Symbolically, this slender bridge-building represents the dynamism and the plural singularity of federal Belgium and its Regions. It is a dynamic monolith dedicated to renewable energies, covered with a large photovoltaic and thermal solar canopy, producing electricity and domestic hot water for the pavilion’s self-consumption.

 

It is also a biophilic architecture that hosts a rich program whose balconies and rooftop are planted with intensive revegetation of more than 2,500 plants, shrubs, and trees. These “breathable”, drip-watered facades, naturally refresh - through evapotranspiration from the plants - the large outdoor terraces where having fun is encouraged.

 

“The Green Arch” perfectly expresses the concept of “Belgitude”, this typically Belgian aptitude for synthesizing in the heart of Europe the very creative Latin romantic spirit with the pragmatic ingenuity of Germanics and Anglo-Saxons.

 

 

 

 

 

 

더 그린 아치, 두바이 엑스포 2020 벨기에관

 

벨기에 파빌리온은 단단한 목재에 집중적인 녹지와 미래 지향적인 디자인이 결합되어 “그린 아치”라고 불린다. 파빌리온은 지속 가능한 개발 측면에서 모범이 되는 것을 목표로 한다. 재생 순환 경제, 생물 기반 및 지구 자원 재료, 생물 기후 규칙과 재생 가능한 에너지의 통합, 그리고 생물 다양성과 자연 보존을 위한 찬사이다. “모빌리티 디스트릭트”에 위치한 벨기에 전시관의 건축 컨셉은 방문객들에게 두바이의 서쪽-동쪽 바람의 축에 있는 가장 큰 그늘지고 자연 환기가 되는 아고라를 제공하는 것이다. 이러한 프로그램의 1층 공간은 최대 공간이 대중이 자유롭게 사용할 수 있도록 더 높은 곳에 배치되어 있다. 이것은 “그린 아치”가 “다리 건설”에 기반을 두고 있다는 것을 의미하며, 두 기둥 사이에 이중 곡률을 가진 거대한 아치를 만든다. 이 곡선형 볼트는 쌍곡 포물선이라고 불리는 수학적 최소 표면에서 생성된다. 이 포물면은 CLT(Cross Laminated Timber)로 제작되었으며 5.5km 이상의 가문비나무 미늘창이 거대한 나무 마슈라비야를 생성한다. 이는 180도 회전하여 전체 프로젝트를 감싸 태양 복사열로부터 내부를 잘 보호한다.

 

아고라는 파빌리온을 가로질러 ‘모빌리티 지구’와 ‘지속가능 지구’를 직접 연결하는 ‘바로가기’ 개념으로 설계됐다. “BeBizz”라는 비즈니스 센터와 VIP 라운지는 비즈니스 회담과 국제 회담을 주최하고 서로의 마음을 연결하여 바람직한 미래를 창조할 수 있는 높은 수준의 편의 시설을 제공한다. 상징적으로, 이 가느다란 다리 건물은 벨기에 연방과 그 지역의 역동성이라는 특이성을 나타낸다. 재생 에너지 전용의 역동적인 모노리스이면서, 대형 광전지 및 태양열 캐노피로 덮여 있어 자체 소비를 위한 전기 및 가정용 온수를 생산한다. 또한 발코니와 옥상에 2,500개 이상의 식물, 관목 및 나무가 집중적으로 식재되어 있는 풍부한 프로그램을 호스팅하는 생물 친화적인 건축물이다. 이러한 “통기성”의 물방울이 떨어지는 입면은 식물의 증발산을 통해 자연적으로 상쾌함을 더해준다.

 

“녹색 아치”는 “벨기티듀”의 개념을 완벽하게 표현한다. 이것은 유럽의 중심부에서 매우 창의적인 라틴 낭만주의 정신과 게르만족과 앵글로색슨족의 실용적인 독창성을 종합하는 전형적인 벨기에의 특성이다.
