The extension of the Maeght Foundation is an invisible project: two new exhibition rooms are slipped under the two outdoor courtyards dedicated to the artists Miró and Giacometti, in the stone plinth on which Josep Lluís Sert had placed his building. To respect both this emblematic architecture and the family history that presided over its creation, nothing had to be added, but on the contrary subtracted, by digging into the embankment of the 1960s construction site, to build the new spaces, opened by large frames towards the pine forest to the south and in constant dialogue with nature.
A gallery provides the connection between these two volumes and adopts the sinusoidal shape of the Miró terrace which is above it. Of different sizes – 392m2 and 66m2 respectively - the rooms maintain the same relationship of proportions. The largest, accessible via a beautiful introductory gallery from an existing renovated technical space, is a free volume about 14m wide by 28m long. A strong desire of the extension is to extend the original museographic tour in a loop, while maintaining the immediate natural contact between the interior and the exterior that makes the magic of the Foundation. In the end, the notion of a major route at the Maeght Foundation is preserved, the architecture of Sert is in no way affected and the soul of the place is preserved although we are increasing the surface area by 65%.
The choice of materials has been very thorough to restore the original, high-quality textures: Inside, the floors of the new rooms are made of travertine from the quarries of Tivoli, near Rome, in a light and very veined tone identical to that already found at the Foundation. Its colour ensures continuity with the limestone base of the place.
Site concrete was fabricated to build the projecting volumes of the new rooms. This concrete recalls the texture, colors, and grain size of the local stone of the base, which has the same original composition as the limestone of the site. The base was rebuilt, stone by stone, by local craftsmen.
The technical development was complex to achieve the objective of a simple and refined project, in strong relationship with the soul of the place.
