The Second World War Museum

The concept of the Museum of World War II was selected in the international architectural competition in 2010. We had many ideas whilst preparing this project. Ultimately, we chose the one that seemed the boldest, bravest, and a bit risky to us – but at the same time promising something unusual, very distinctive and memorable.

The idea behind it is simple enough – to position the main part of the museum underground so as not to completely use up the small plot of land intended for investment. We have concealed the other functions in sculptural form. In this way, it was possible to find space for a vast square, and the whole premise became symbolic.

The past is locked up beneath the ground. Here, a story unfolds about the trauma of war, about human cruelty, treason and hatred, but also a story of heroism, sacrifice, courage and love. The narrative about this part of our nature will guide visitors to the floors above, to the light, to the present. The square mentioned is its symbolic expression. A place where people can meet, socialise and relax. Future and hope also form an expressive block.

Directed towards the city, it contains a library, lecture halls and a restaurant with a viewpoint, from which you will be able to admire the panorama of bustling, rebuilt Gdansk after the hard work of sightseeing. Entering the museum itself contributes to a certain mood: from an initial carefree mood through uncertainty, to reverie, to complete silence. Prepared in this way, the visitor may begin their journey through rooms recounting the hell of war, and finish at the observation deck on the top floor of the dominant building.

This simple sculptural form, devoid of literal meaning, evokes various associations. It has already been likened to a bastion, a barrier, a crumbling house or a bunker, and when illuminated at night, it resembles a burning candle. At the same time, it fits in with the city image and the geometry of shipyard cranes – the symbol of the port of Gdansk.

It creates a new identity for this peripheral location and becomes one of the numerous features that mark out the landscape of Gdansk: church towers and the town hall, including St. Mary’s Basilica, which has permanently set the local colour and texture. I believe our project will fit in well within this environment, while also rehabilitating the beautiful red colour that many associate first and foremost with the totalitarianism of the past.

제2차 세계 대전 박물관 

제2차 세계 대전 박물관의 개념은 2010 국제 건축 공모전에서 선정된 것이다. 이 프로젝트를 준비하면서 많은 아이디어를 얻었다. 대담하고, 용감하며, 약간 위험한 것처럼 보였던, 하지만 동시에 무언가 평범하지 않고, 눈에 띄며 추억할 수 있는 디자인을 선택하였다. 아이디어는 투자 대상 토지의 일부 구역을 완전히 다 사용하지 않기 위해 박물관의 주요 부분을 지하에 배치하는 것이었다.

우리는 조각적 형태로 다른 기능들을 숨겨왔다. 이런 방식으로 광대한 광장을 위한 공간을 찾을 수 있었고 이 공간은 박물관의 상징적 요소가 되었다. 과거는 땅 밑에 갇혀 있다. 여기서 전쟁 트라우마, 인간의 잔혹성, 반역 및 혐오에 대한 이야기 뿐만 아니라 영웅주의, 희생, 용기, 그리고 사랑에 관한 이야기를 보여준다. 우리의 성격 일부분에 대한 이야기는 방문객을 위층으로, 빛과 현재로 안내한다.

언급된 광장은 상징적 표현이다. 이곳은 사람들이 만나고, 친목하고, 편안함을 느끼는 곳이다. 미래와 희망 역시 이 광장을 표현한다. 도시로 향하는 이 곳에는 도서관, 강의실, 전망이 있는 레스토랑이 있으며, 열심히 관광한 후에 다시 북적거리고, 재건된 Gdaʼnsk의 전경을 감상할 수 있을 것이다. 박물관에 입장하는 그 자체로 어떤 기분을 느끼게 한다.

예를 들어, 처음에는 반신반의함 때문에 근심걱정 없는 기분과 공상, 또는 침묵을 완성하는 느낌을 갖게 한다. 이러한 식으로 방문객들은 아마도 전쟁의 지옥을 말하는 방을 시작으로 건물의 맨 꼭대기 층에 있는 전망대까지 여행을 할 것이다. 문자 그대로의 의미가 없는 이 단순한 조각 양식은 다양한 연계를 불러 일으킨다.

그것은 이미 요새, 장벽, 무너져가는 집 또는 벙커에 비유되고, 밤에 불이 켜지면 불타는 촛불을 닮았다. 이것은 도시의 이미지와 Gdaʼnsk 항구의 상징인 조선 크레인의 형상과 잘 맞는다. 이것은 새로운 정체성을 갖고 동네의 풍경을 나타내는 특징이 된다. 이 프로젝트는 주변 환경과 어울리며, 가장 중요하게 연관되어 있는 과거의 전체주의와 함께 아름다운 붉은 색을 다시 되살릴 것이다.
