Whitney Museum

One of the most significant cultural projects in New York City in this decade, the Whitney Museum of American’s Art’s new 20,438㎡ building, located at 99 Gansevoort Street between Washington Street and the Hudson River in downtown Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, scheduled to open on May 1, 2015.

The new building will approximately double the Whitney’s exhibition space and provide extraordinary possibilities for artists, curators, and audiences.

It will enable the Whitney to expand its pioneering temporary exhibitions-including the Museum’s signature Whitney Biennial and to present all of its exhibitions in the context of the Museum’s first comprehensive installation of its unsurpassed collection of 20th and 21 century American art.

The building includes an education center with dedicated space for state of the art classrooms; a 170 seat multi-use theater, a black box theater for film, video, and performance with an adjacent outdoor gallery, and a Works on Paper Study Center, Conservation Lab, and Library Reading Room.

The classrooms, theater, and study center are all firsts for the Whitney. With striking views of the Hudson River and situated at the southern entrance to the popular elevated High Line park in one of New York’s most vibrant neighborhoods, the new building is designed to engage a lively and diverse international, national, and local audience.

Renzo Piano’s design takes a strong and strikingly asymmetrical form-one that responds to the industrial character of the neighboring loft buildings and overhead railway while asserting a contemporary, sculptural presence. The lobby, which includes a gallery for permanent collection and special exhibitions and a spacious area for installations, continues the notion of community space and will be open to the public free of charge.

휘트니 미술관 

지난 10년 동안 뉴욕에서 가장 주목할만한 문화 프로젝트 중 하나인 휘트니 미술관은 워싱턴 거리와 허드슨 강 사이의 맨해튼 미트패킹 지역인 갠즈보트 99번지에 20,438㎡ 면적의 신축 건물로 2015년 5월 1일에 개장됐다. 새로운 건물은 기존 휘트니보다 두 배에 달하는 전시공간을 제공하는 것은 물론 예술가, 큐레이터, 그리고 관람객에게 새롭고 특별한 가능성을 제공한다.

또한, 휘트니의 대표적인 비상설 전시 프로그램인 휘트니 비엔날레 같은 선구적인 기획전이 확장될 수 있도록 하며, 미술관 최초의 통합적인 전시 계획에 따라 휘트니가 소장하고 있는 20세기와 21세기의 뛰어난 미국 예술작품을 전시할 수 있는 공간이 확보됐다. 건물에는 최첨단 설비를 갖춘 교육센터가 포함됐는데, 이 센터는 170석 규모의 다목적 극장, 외부 갤러리와 연계되어 영상 및 공연을 위한 블랙박스 극장, 논문연구센터, 보존 연구소, 도서관 등의 시설을 갖추고 있다.

특히, 교실, 극장, 학습센터는 기존 휘트니에 없었던 새로운 시설이다. 뉴욕에서 가장 활기찬 지역에 위치한 미술관은 유명한 하이라인 공원의 남쪽 출입구와 이어져 있으며, 허드슨 강이 한눈에 보이는 뛰어난 조망을 자랑한다. 이러한 장소 특성을 반영하여 새로운 건물은 지역 주민과 다양한 국적의 관람객이 활발한 소통을 이룰 수 있도록 설계됐다.

렌조 피아노의 디자인은 강렬하고 충격적인 비대칭 형태의 건축물로, 주변 산업적인 스타일의 고층 빌딩과 고가 철도로 이루어진 지역이 조화를 이루면서 현대적이고 조형적인 아름다움을 더한다. 그밖에 로비는 상설 및 특별 전시공간과 설치작품을 위한 넓은 공간으로 구성됐고, 소통을 위한 문화공간이라는 설립 의도에 따라 대중에게 무료로 공개된다.
