Resulting from an extensive visioning process exploring the evolving role of the library in the digital age, The Vaughan Civic Centre Resource Library by ZAS Architects is a visionary maker-space dedicated to community learning, gathering, creating and celebration. Revealing layers of open interior spaces, the reflective facade appears ever-changing in a constant play of light.

It’s complex geometry forms a loop around the central interior courtyard, it’s pattern shifting glass panels representing the overlap of ideas and user groups who gather inside. Marking a transformation from traditional historic library architecture, flexible spaces create an empowering community amenity, encouraging social interaction and group learning.

Akin to a contemporary bookstore, the library’s marketplace cafe, and open reading area welcome visitors as they enter the immersive environment. In contrast to the monochromatic exterior facade, colorful furniture and glass animate a fluid series of bright spaces, balancing open meeting areas with places for private study.

Dynamic natural lighting acts as a guide throughout the space, directing visitors as they explore the collection. Prominent and visible from the library’s entrance and also around the building is an anchoring outdoor garden courtyard and symbolic red maple “Tree of Knowledge”. Collaboration spaces, meeting rooms, a ‘teen-only’ lounge, public-access computers, a large study hall, and an extensive children’s activity area form a circle around the courtyard, representing a circle of community. From the cafe to the central outdoor courtyard, the vibrant two-story facility hosts extensive public activity space far beyond the library’s collection of books.

Accessible for all, visitors are encouraged to animate ideas within the library’s maker-spaces. Computer modeling and 3D printers, a media suite, sound recording studio, video studio and green screen all creates hands-on opportunities to learn, discover curiosities and hone craft. Multi-generational and diverse, each space within has been designed to foster learning for wide-ranging user groups.

Indicative of a library’s ‘function in ?flux’, highly flexible, movable book collection stacks offer flexibility for librarians and visitors to use the space in multiple ways, as the needs of the community evolve daily or annually. Exposing residents to new possibilities of discovery, public areas are transparent and visually interlinked.

Expansive glazing at the street level engages all passing by to join the activity inside. Social zones, lounge seating, and individual study space also surround the perimeter windows, maximizing light and views while creating a direct connection with the neighborhood beyond. Throughout, dynamic multi-functional spaces embody the library’s transformation, from a place of solitude and reflection to one of social connection and creative discovery.

본 시빅 센터 리소스 도서관

본 시빅 센터 리소스 도서관은 디지털 시대에 맞추어 끊임없이 진화하고 있는 도서관의 역할을 탐구하는 광범위한 비전화 과정의 결과물로, 공동체의 교육, 모임, 창작 및 기념 공간이다. 내부 공간을 드러내는 반사 외관은 빛의 춤사위 속에서 끊임없이 변화한다. 이 건물의 복잡한 기하학적 구조는 중앙의 안뜰을 둘러싸고 있으며, 패턴이 바뀌는 유리 패널은 아이디어와 건물 내에 모이는 사용자 그룹의 중첩을 표현한다. 전통적이며 역사적인 도서관 건축의 변화를 표현한 유연한 공간은 시민에게 권한을 부여하는 공동체 편의 시설을 만들어 사회적 상호작용 및 그룹 학습을 장려한다. 현대식 서점과 유사한 도서관의 카페와 열린 독서 공간은 방문자가 몰입형 환경으로 진입할 때 그들을 환영한다.

단색 외부 입면에 반해, 다채로운 색의 가구와 유리는 밝은 공간을 연출하며 개방된 회의 공간과 개인 학습 공간의 균형을 맞춘다. 공간 전체의 안내자 역할을 하는 다이나믹한 자연광은 장서를 탐색하는 방문자들을 안내한다. 도서관 입구와 건물 주변에 눈에 잘 띄는 위치에는 옥외 정원과 “지식의 나무” 붉은 단풍나무가 있다. 협업 공간, 회의실, '십 대 전용’ 라운지, 공용 컴퓨터, 대형 독서실, 광범위한 어린이 활동 공간이 안뜰 주변에서 커뮤니티의 원을 상징하는 원 모양을 형성한다. 카페에서부터 중앙 야외 마당에 이르기까지, 이 생동감 있는 2층 시설은 도서관의 장서를 훨씬 능가하는 광범위한 공공 활동 공간들이 있다.모든 사람에게 열린 도서관의 메이커 스페이스는 방문객들이 자신의 아이디어에 생기를 불어넣도록 장려한다. 컴퓨터 모델링 및 3D 프린터, 미디어 모음, 녹음 스튜디오, 비디오 스튜디오 및 녹색 스크린은 사용자가 직접 배우고 호기심을 발견하며 기술을 연마할 수 있는 실습 기회를 제공한다.

다양한 연령과 인종이 사용할 수 있는 각 공간은 여러 사용자 그룹의 학습 발전을 위해 설계되었다. 도서관의 기능적 유입을 나타내는 매우 유연하고 이동 가능한 장서 모음은 공동체의 요구가 매일 또는 매년 발전함에 따라 사서와 방문자가 이 공간을 다양하게 사용할 수 있는 유연성을 제공한다. 거주자를 새로운 발견 가능성에 노출 시키도록 공공장소는 투명하며 시각적으로 연결된다. 가로에서 들여다보이는 내부는 지나가는 모든 사람이 참여하도록 초청한다. 또한, 사회 활동 존, 라운지 좌석, 개별 학습 공간은 주변이 유리로 둘러싸여 있어, 빛과 전망을 극대화하는 동시에 주변 너머와 직접적인 연결을 만든다. 전반적으로 역동적인 다기능 공간은 고독과 고찰의 장소에서부터 사회적 연결과 창의적인 발견의 장소에 이르기까지 도서관의 변화를 구현한다.
