Tessellate (verb)

“cover (a plane surface) by repeated use of a single shape, without gaps or overlapping.”

The New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (or Noida), is one of the few municipal organizations in the world where the city agency has actually lent it’s acronym to the very city it services. Noida, as the region to the south-east of Delhi’s Yamuna, is colloquially known, is home to one of the largest “planned” areas in the region. A vast swathe of seemingly boundless grids has been overlaid over the landscape, with sector numbers running into triple digits. Connected via an immense highway to the south is Greater Noida, an equally ambitious planning exercise that is home to institutions, multi-story residential buildings and even, an erstwhile formula one racing track. Nestled in the midst of this conurbation is the Hosiery Complex, an industrial hub allocated to the garment manufacturing business. Twenty years in the making, the surroundings still very much feel like a work in progress, as smaller industrial units give way to denser, vertical factories contained in multi-story configurations.

The building is laid out to maximise the efficiency of manufacturing processes that are housed within. Pallets of fabric make their way down ramps to the storage areas in the basement, where they are cut and bunched into bundles, complete with accessories. These make their way to the upper floors, where lines of stitching machines produce the semi finished product. The final touches of packaging, labelling, quality control and despatch are handled on the ground floor. The office space dominates the first floor, with the largest areas allocated for the sampling section and a work space for the designers. This work space was designed as a white space, a blank canvas to encourage creative freedom, while reducing strain. A showroom and a few private offices line the perimeter, while a corridor provides the requisite access to the rear fire escape stair.

The name of the building is derived from the visual complexity of the facade. To tessellate is to repeat a pattern so as to create a plane. The unit chosen here is the triangle, the proportions so chosen for the ability to extract exactly four equal four-foot side pieces from a single 8x4 sheet. Apart from the longevity, the idea that material must not be wasted is a key component of our approach to sustainability. While the glass panels may appear randomly sprinkled, their positions are the result of interior daylighting requirements. The colours of the panels themselves have been chosen for better light absorption at lower levels, with higher levels of reflectivity closer to the top of the building. A tubular aluminum frame supported on robust metal brackets underpins the facade. Diagonal cross bracing support the glass and aluminum panels on the peripheries, creating the precise six sided joints. As the city inexorably grows to encompass these peripheral industrial areas, it’s architecture would also need to be responsive to this growth and migrating population. Creating workplaces that appear more welcome, would not only ensure better working environments and further better productivity, but also a much needed change to the decade-old context.

테셀레이션(바둑판 형식)

“외피는 (평평한 면) 한가지 형태를 틈이나 겹침 없이 반복하여 덮었다.”

New Okhla Industrial Development Authority 혹은 Noida(뉴 오클라 산업 발전 지구 / 노이다)는 세계에서 몇 안되는 지방자치제 단체 중 하나로 시 당국은 뉴 오클라 산업 개발청의 약자를 실제로 도시명으로 사용할 수 있도록 빌려주었다. 노이다는 델리(Delhi)의 야무나(Yamuna) 강의 동남 지역으로 “계획된” 도시 중 제일 큰 구역으로 알려져 있다. 광대하게 보이는 끝 없는 격자 무늬의 거대한 띠가 풍경 위에 겹쳐 있고, 3자리 숫자까지 이어진 번지 수로 나눠져 있다. 건축물은 내부 제조 공정의 효율성을 극대화하기 위해 설계되었다. 팔레트로 운반되는 옷감은 경사로를 타고 지하 창고 공간까지 내려와 옷감을 자르고 다발로 꾸려져 액세서리와 함께 완성된다. 마무리 된 물건들은 재봉틀이 줄지어 있는 위층으로 올라가 반제품으로 만들어진다. 패키징과 라벨링 그리고 품질 관리 및 배송의 최종 마무리는 1층에서 처리된다. 사무 공간은 1층을 차지하고 있으며, 디자이너의 업무 공간과 표본 추출 구역으로 제일 넓은 공간을 할당했다. 이 업무 공간은 흰색으로 디자인하여, 빈 캔버스와 같이 창작의 자유를 장려하는 동시에 부담감을 줄여준다. 쇼룸과 몇몇 개인 사무실은 주위에 줄지어 있으며, 복도는 화재 피난 계단에 필요한 출입구를 제공한다.

건물의 명칭은 정면 파사드의 시각적 복잡성에서 유래되었다. 테슬레이션은 면을 만들기 위해 같은 패턴을 반복한다. 여기서 선택된 구성원은 삼각형이며, 비율은 8X4 시트에서 정확히 4개의 4피트 길이를 얻기 위해 정해졌다. 장수명화를 제외한 재질에 대한 방안은, 낭비를 하지 않는 것이 우리가 지속 가능성에 접근하는 핵심 요소였다. 유리 패널은 무작위로 뿌려진 게 아니라, 필요한 내부 일광에 맞춰 배치되었다. 패널의 색상은 낮은 층에서 더 나은 빛 흡수를 정해졌고, 높은 층으로 올라갈수록 더 높은 반사율을 가졌다. 알루미늄 프레임은 튼튼한 철재 브라켓에 지지하고 있으며 파사드를 받쳐주고 있다. 대각선 버팀대는 유리를 잡아주고 정밀한 6각 조인트를 만들어 알루미늄 패널 끝을 잡아준다.

도시가 이러한 주변 산업 구역을 포함하여 무작위로 자라고 있어, 그의 건축 또한 성장과 이주하는 인구에 맞춰 대응할 필요가 있다. 환영으로 맞이하는 업무 공간을 만들면 더 나은 업무 환경을 보장할 뿐만이 아니라, 더 나은 생산력을 제공하지만, 그 보다 10년 넘은 주위 환경을 바꿀 필요성이 더 많아 보인다.
