The building height is to be 9.3m above ground level. The plan is to be in a U-shape, and the courtyard and parking lot should be in the designated location. The roof is to be a gable roof with a slope of 45 degrees, made of black metal. The material of the wall should be red brick.

The site was a plot of land for a house with an incredibly restricted district unit plan. It was a plan determined not to make a zoo-like

residential area. Dimensions including the location of the outer wall were given as guidelines. Creating the plan was like putting puzzle pieces together, in which we could move only the inner walls while the outer walls were already defined.

The house is for a scholar couple that plans to retire. The annex is a space for occasional guests. As there were a lot of books, the living room is a space for reading. The couple wished to have the TV in a separate family room. The difference between a house and an apartment is that a house can provide more imaginative and diverse spaces. All the houses in the neighborhood looked similar on the outside so we hoped for this house to have the most diverse combination of spaces. 

The space that made this possible was the gable roof. One of the things that people romanticize about when they hear the word ‘house’ is the attic, the space beneath the gable roof. So hiding in this house an impressive attic, which is difficult to guess from the outside. Hence the attic has become the most popular space in this house.

The puzzle was put together numerous times to get the maximum possible living room height, a combination of various spaces, and a nearly perfect simulation was conducted through the computer. The mass of the U-shaped house was more complex than we expected. So for all the parts where materials meet, we chose a method of deducting rather than adding. The gutters created by the roof and walls were gone, and the brick joints were also cut deep.

The client is a devout Catholic. Like the name of the house, they wish to live an upright and centered life. The living room is the central space for the family that makes an effort to live this way. Thus the living space should be a space that shows such belief.

The dazzling light that we always anticipate will reveal itself only after it becomes autumn and the light tilts. The plate attached to the wall of the living room is a device that will make the light truly extravagant, which will also reveal its usefulness with the arrival of autumn.

건물의 높이는 도로면에서 9.3m여야 한다. 평면은 ㄷ자여야 하며 중정 및 주차장의 위치는 지정된 곳이어야 한다. 지붕은 경사 45도의 박공 지붕이어야 하며 벽체의 재료는 붉은 벽돌, 지붕의 재료는 검은 금속이어야 한다. 대지는 엄청나게 구속적인 지구단위계획을 갖고 있는 단독주택 필지였다. 주택동물원을 만들지 않겠다는 의지가 만든 계획의 모습이었다. 외벽의 위치까지 기입된 치수가 가이드라인으로 주어졌다. 외곽선이 완전히 규정된 가운데서 내부의 벽체만 움직일 수 있는 퍼즐놀이의 계획이었다. 은퇴를 예정하고 있는 학자 부부가 체류할 집이다. 별채는 가끔 방문할 손님의 공간이면 된다. 책이 많은지라 거실은 책 읽는 공간이고 TV는 별도로 구획된 가족실에 배치하기를 원하는 조건이었다. 주택이 아파트와 다른 것은 화려하고 다양한 공간이 제공될 수 있다는 점이다.

겉보기에 모두 같은 집들이 모여 있어서 이 집은 그 중 가장 다채로운 공간이 조합되어 있기를 기대했다. 그런 공간을 가능하게 하는 것이 바로 박공 지붕이었다. 주택이라는 단어의 로망에 깃들어 있는 것이 바로 그 박공 지붕 아래의 공간, 다락일 것이다. 이 집에는 그래서 밖에서 보아서는 짐작하기 어려운 화려한 다락이 숨어있다. 그래서 이 주택에서 가장 인기있는 공간은 다락이 되었다. 최대한의 거실 층고 확보, 다양한 공간의 조합을 위해 여러 번의 퍼즐 맞추기가 이루어졌고 완벽할 정도의 시뮬레이션이 컴퓨터를 통해 진행되었다. ㄷ자 평면의 주택은 덩어리가 기대보다 복잡했다. 그래서 모든 부재가 만나는 부분은 뭔가를 덧붙이지 않고 빼내는 방식을 선택했다. 지붕과 벽이 만드는 부분의 홈통도 사라지고 벽돌의 줄눈도 모두 깊게 파냈다. 건축주는 독실한 카톨릭 신자다. 당호에서 보이는 것처럼 바르고 중심에서 살아가기를 원한다. 거실은 그렇게 살고자 하는 가족이 생활하는 중심공간이다. 그래서 거실공간은 그런 믿음을 보여주는 공간이 되어야 할 것이다. 항상 기대하는 화려한 빛은 가을이 되어 빛이 좀 기울어야 모습을 드러낼 것이다. 거실 벽면에 붙은 판은 그 빛을 정말로 화려하게 만들어 줄 장치인데 그 장치의 효용성도 가을이 되어야 드러날 것이다.
