Time in Shadow For more than 200 years, the Yellow River has been the cradle of Dawan Village, and become the witness of its developing cultural context. It was not only a frontier city in history, but also a passage way that connects the culture and economy in Serindia area, a precious landscape that combines the Yellow River and the desert. The project is located at the bank of the River. We do not want an ambitious landmark, instead, we want to create buildings that involves into the nature and become invisible, balancing architecture and nature with humbleness and veneration. There are 15 rooms in the hotel, each room was injected with different characteristics and has a framed view to the river or to the fruit-bearing forest. By creating different room types, DAS Lab tries to experiment on different models, scales and materials to re-evaluate the relationship between human and nature.
Inheriting from local houses, the hotel is designed with flat houses, terraces, courtyards and reed-topped eaves galleries to encourage more outdoor activities. We used a special treatment of cement mortar on the exterior walls to restore the texture of rammed earth wall from local buildings, so the architecture will look beautifully “Old” after being exposed to winds and rains after a while. The Dawan Village, the lowest temperature in winter reaches minus 20°. Therefore, except the large-scale floor-to-ceiling windows to the landscape, the other facades have limited openings. By doing this, we managed to re-examine the relationship between windows, lights, space and human, and to further lead to exploring the scenarized expression of our consciousness on spaces.
Light is a key element in the interior. Light is the shadow, when all decorations and colors are visually hidden in the heaviness of space, you will only see the light and the shadow changing with time, playing a symphony on the walls and floors and conveying the spirituality of the space, which stimulates strong emotional resonance. We believed that a parent-child room should be both satisfying the freedom for children to play and the functionality for the whole family. Therefore we designed a special space for the children in the mezzanine where the adult may feel it too small for themselves but the children can have great fun inside.
황하의 색을 가진 부티크 호텔
시간의 그림자 황하는 200년이 넘는 시간 동안 다완(Dawan) 마을의 요람이자, 발전하는 문화적 맥락 안에서 마을의 살아있는 증인으로서 자리를 지키고 있다. 역사 속 문명의 개척도시일 뿐만 아니라 과거 실크로드를 통해 전파된 세린디아(Serindia, 중국을 뜻하는 중국과 인도를 뜻하는 인디아가 합쳐진 말) 문화와 경제를 잇는 통로이기도 했다.
이러한 역사적으로 귀중한 황하 강둑 근처에 부티크 호텔이 들어섰다. 호텔은 야심 찬 랜드마크보다는 자연 속에 들어가 눈에 띄지 않는 형태를 하고 있다. 이는 건축과 자연의 균형과 겸손함과 숭배의 균형을 이루기 위해 건축가가 의도한 것이다. 호텔에는 15개의 방이 있다. 각 방은 각기 다른 특징을 가지며 강이나 과일 숲으로 둘러싸여 있으며, 창문을 통해 바라보는 경치는 액자 속 그림같다. 디자인을 맡은 DAS 랩은 다양한 모델, 크기, 재료를 실험하여 여러 객실 유형을 만들었고, 인간과 자연의 관계를 다시 평가하고자 했다. 또한, 현지에 이미 지어진 가옥의 연장선상에서 평평한 집, 테라스, 중정, 갈대 처마 등이 만들어졌다. 특히, 갈대 처마는 투숙객들의 야외 활동을 위해 만들어졌다. 외벽은 시멘트 모르타르가 특별한 방법으로 처리되어 있다. 현지 건물의 압착된 흙벽 질감이 호텔 외벽에 적용됐다. 건축물은 바람과 비에 자연스럽게 노출되면서 아름답게 ‘오래된 것’처럼 보일 것이다.
호텔이 위치한 다완마을은 겨울철 최저기온이 영하 20도에 이르는 곳이기 때문에, 큰 창을 제외한 면에는 개구부가 제한되어 있다. 이런 작업들은 DAS 랩은 창문, 조명, 공간, 인간의 관계를 재검토했으며, 더 나아가 공간에 대한 풍부한 표현을 탐구하기도 했다. 호텔의 실내에서는 빛이 중요한 요소로 사용됐다. 빛은 곧 그림자였다. 모든 장식과 색채가 공간의 무거움에 의해 시각적으로 가려져 있을 때, 빛과 그림자가 시간에 따라 변화하면서 벽과 바닥에서 교향곡을 연주하고 공간의 영성을 전달하여 강한 정서적 공명을 자극한다. 가족을 위한 객실은 가족 전체의 기능을 만족시키며, 아이들이 자유롭게 놀 수 있도록 디자인됐다. 특히, DAS 랩은 메자닌(Mezzanie)을 활용하여 아이들을 위한 특별한 공간을 만들었다. 그 공간은 어른들이 느끼기에는 협소하다고 느낄 수 있지만, 아이들은 안에서 아주 재미있게 놀 수 있는 공간이다.
