NIZHNY NOVGOROD STADIUM

Nizhny Novgorod was the host city of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, and the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium is a football-specific stadium that was built for the World Cup. The stadium was built by the Volga River that flows through western Russia. The stadium is located at the junction of Volga River with Oka River, and this is one of the major landmarks overlooking the city as it is an observatory point of Nizhny Novgorod (Strelka, Spit of Nizhny Novgorod). Moreover, it is also close to areas with historical buildings since the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, an architecture with Russia’s architectural history, is located nearby. In particular, because the cathedral is a landmark within the city that is visible from anywhere in the city’s center, the stadium was designed to have its footpath overlap with that of the observatory point as a tourist sight for city dwellers and visitors.

As the stadium was built on the riverside, its space was minutely organized within the city’s plan along with Volga River, which is an important axis of the city. Furthermore, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was able to bring its existing influence in the city into the stadium, and this allowed the abandoned spaces around the observatory to be used. In this way, the stadium was able to exist as an element that forms a historic area with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the area’s historic sites as well as the observatory park.

The shape of Volga River’s water and wind was applied as the main concept of the stadium. The lobby and seats for spectators are covered with a translucent roof by the regularly placed pillars, and the triangular trusses supporting the roof are arranged in a form surrounding the circle. The stadium has several stairs that are placed around the round architecture, and they are connected with the pedestrian path.

The stadium’s seats are covered with a circular and radial roof. The shape of the roof is close to an elliptical cone shape that is low and has no vertices. The translucent roof, which is made of polycarbonate, is harmoniously designed with blue colors. The pillars that support the roof of the stadium consist of an outer part and an inner part. A blue facade made of fixed panels is installed to the concrete pillars created along the inner circumference. The panels are fixed to the outside of the pillars on one side, and to the inside on the other. The panels, which are made in the form of “Sails”, surround the pillars, cross between them and help to structurally secure them. In addition, these crossing panels are installed to the outside of the pillars, and the inside, where the seats are.

니즈니 노브고로드 축구경기장 니즈니 노브고로드는 2018 FIFA 월드컵 러시아가 개최된 도시로, 니즈니 노브고로드 축구경기장은 월드컵을 위해 세워진 축구 전용 경기장이다. 경기장은 러시아 서부를 흐르는 볼가 강(Volga River) 옆에 세워졌다. 경기장은 볼가 강과 오카 강(Oka River)이 합류하는 지점에 자리하는데, 이곳은 니즈니 노브고로드의 전망대 지점(Strelka, Spit of Nizhny Novgorod)으로 도시를 바라볼 수 있는 주요 랜드마크 중 하나다. 뿐만아니라, 근처에 러시아의 역사가 있는 건축물인 알렉산드르 네프스키 성당(Alexander Nevsky Cathedral)이 자리하며, 이러한 역사적 건물이 모여있는 영역과도 근접하게 위치한다. 특히, 성당은 도시에서 어디에서든 보이는 도심 속 랜드마크로, 경기장이 도시민과 방문자를 위한 관광 장소로 활용되도록 전망대 지점과 경기장의 보행로 부분이 겹쳐지도록 계획됐다.

경기장은 강변에 지어짐으로써, 도시의 중요한 축인 볼가 강과 함께하며 도시의 계획 안에서 세밀하게 공간이 구성됐다. 또한, 알렉산드르 네프스키 성당이 도시 안에서 기존에 가지고 있던 영향력을 경기장으로 끌어들일 수 있었으며, 전망대 주변의 버러져 있던 공간들을 활용할 수 있었다. 이렇게 경기장은 알렉산드르 네프스키 성당, 일대의 유적지들과, 전망대 공원 지점까지 역사적인 일대를 구성시키는 한 요소로 존재한다.

볼가 강의 물과 바람의 형상은 경기장의 주요 콘셉트로 적용됐다. 관중들을 위한 로비와 관중석은 규칙적으로 배치된 기둥에 의해 반투명한 재질의 지붕으로 덮여있으며, 지붕을 지지하는 삼각 트러스는 원을 빙 둘러싼 형태로 배치되어 있다. 경기장은 원 형태의 건축물에 둥글게 자리 잡은 여러 개의 계단들이 나있으며, 보행길과 연결된다.

경기장의 관람석을 덮는 것은 둥근 방사형 형태의 지붕이다. 지붕의 형상은 타원형의 낮고 꼭지가 없는 원뿔 형태에 가깝다. 폴리카보네이트로 만들어진 반투명 지붕은 푸른 빛으로 조화롭게 디자인되어 있다. 경기장의 지붕을 지지하는 기둥은 바깥쪽과 안쪽으로 이루어져 있다. 안쪽 둘레를 따라 만들어진 콘크리트 기둥에는 고정된 패널로 만들어진 푸른빛의 파사드가 설치되어 있다. 패널들은 한 쪽으로는 기둥의 외부에 고정되어 있으며, 다른 한 쪽은 그 내부에 고정되어 있다. “돛”과 같은 형태로 만들어진 패널들은 기둥을 둘러싸고, 기둥 사이사이 교차하며 구조적으로 고정시키는 것을 도와준다. 또한, 이 교차하는 패널들은 기둥의 바깥쪽과, 관중석이 있는 안쪽까지 설치되어 있다.
