Al Janoub Stadium was the first new stadium commissioned for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. As one of the eight venues for the Qatar World Cup, Al Janoub Stadium is located in Al Wakrah, a coastal city 23km south of Doha connected to the capital via the Red Line of the new Doha Metro system. The 40,000-seat football stadium for the 2022 World Cup can be reduced to 20,000-seat capacity in its legacy mode following the tournament. 20,000 seats is the optimum capacity for legacy use as the home ground to Al Wakrah Sport Club professional football team of the Qatar Stars national league. These temporary seats have been designed to be demountable and transported to a country in need of sporting infrastructure for post-tournament usage. Further temporary accommodation such as concessions are required for the additional capacity of FIFA World Cup tournament mode. This has been built as a temporary overlay outside the permanent footprint and enclosure of the stadium in its legacy mode.

The stadium has an operable roof and a cooling system powered by solar harvesting that ensures the stadium can be used during Qatar’s summer months. The operable roof has been designed in sympathy with the cladding using pleated fabric and cables. When it’s deployed, the roof operates like a sail to cover the oculus above the field of play and create a sheltered environment for football during the summer.

Given the stadium’s context within the coastal city of Al Wakrah, its design reflect the maritime heritage of its location; in particular, the traditional boat of the region, the dhow. The abstraction transforms the literal into something new and appropriate for a football stadium. The facades of the stadium are reminiscent of dhow’s sail. The stadium’s opaque roof and wall areas are expressed as pleated cross sections. This feature, which has its origins in Arabic motifs and calligraphy, adds texture to the outer shell and also emphasizes the stadium’s unique geometry. The colour scheme for the external building envelope dovetails with its geometric forms and reinforces the articulation of the outer skin. The roof cladding and opaque surface areas above the eaves are white or off-white in colour with a gloss surface finish that is reminiscent of sea shells and emphasizes the pleats which add texture to the building envelope. These worked surfaces pays homage to the traditions and artistry of Islamic craftsmanship. The stadium sits on a large landscaped podium that takes visitors from grade to the entry level main entry concourse located at the middle of the seating bowl’s tiers. This podium connects the stadium into the adjacent landscape and reduces its scale. Large parabolic voids within the podium signify different activity zones. On the eastern side, voids allow for the majority of spectators to arrive and depart from the stadium. The north eastern void will include a community market whilst the south eastern void hosts an activity park. To the west, the parabolic void within the podium allows for vehicle access and drop off at grade for the players, officials and dignitaries.

알와크라 축구경기장 도하에서 남쪽으로 23km 떨어진 해안 도시인 알와크라(Al Wakrah)에 새로운 축구경기장이 지어졌다. 알와크라 축구경기장은 2022 FIFA 카타르 월드컵을 위해 카타르에 지어진 8개의 경기장 중 하나이며, 도하의 새로운 지하철 시스템인 ‘레드 라인’을 통해 수도와 연결된다. 총 40,000석 규모를 가진 알와크라 축구경기장은 올림픽 유산 Legacy mode(사업)의 일부이며, 예선전 경기에서는 20,000석 좌석의 규모로 축소하여 사용될 예정이다. 또한, 올림픽 유산으로 남겨져 카타르 스타스 내셔널 리그(Qatar Stars national league)의 알와크라 구단인 프로 축구팀의 홈구장으로 20,000석이 사용될 예정이다. 이렇게 유동적인 좌석은 월드컵 경기 이후 사용하기 위해 스포츠 인프라를 필요로 하는 국가에게 분리하거나 변형할 수 있다. FIFA 월드컵 토너먼트 모드의 추가 좌석을 위해서는 추가 임시 조정되며, 올림픽 유산인 경기장의 영구 설치 공간과 고정된 장소 외부에 임시적으로 덮어 씌우는 구조로 구축됐다. 경기장은 카타르의 뜨거운 사막성 기후 조건에서 축구 경기가 치러질 수 있도록 냉방 시스템과 태양열 에너지로 작동되는 지붕으로 덮여 있다. 이 지붕은 주름진 테플론 페브릭과 케이블을 사용한 피복(클래딩)으로 만들어졌는데, 펴고 접을 수 있는 돛같이 천장을 덮을 수 있도록 만들어져 여름동안에도 축구를 할 수 있는 환경을 만들 수 있다.

경기장의 형태 디자인에는 해안 도시인 알와크라(Al Wakrah)의 해양 유산이 반영되어 있다. 추상적인 콘셉트는 축구경기장에 새롭고 알맞게 적용됐으며, 경기장의 외관은 아랍의 전통적인 배인 “다우(Dhow)"를 연상시킨다. 경기장의 불투명한 지붕과 외벽 부분은 주름진 단면처럼 표현된다. 아랍어 모티브와 서예에서 유래한 이 특징은 외부 표면에 질감을 더하고 경기장의 독특한 기하학을 강조한다. 건물 외피의 색깔의 구성은 기하학적 형태로 더해져서 외부 표면의 표현을 강화한다. 처마 위의 지붕 클래딩, 불투명한 표면 영역은 흰색과 회백색으로 이뤄져 있으며, 표면은 광택 마감 처리와 조개 껍질같은 주름을 강조하여 외피의 질감을 드러낸다. 이런 세심한 질감이 드러나는 표면은 이슬람 장인의 전통과 예술을 보여준다.

관중은 경기장의 대형 포디움을 통해서 경기장 외부에서 관람석 층을 입장할 수 있으며, 이 이동경로를 통해 주요 홀, 입구까지 연결된다. 이 대형 포디움은 지상으로부터 경기장을 연결하고, 전체적인 규모를 줄인다. 포디움 안의 큰 포물선으로 이루어진 빈 공간은 다른 활동 구역이다. 동부쪽의 빈 공간은 관중이 경기장에 들어서거나, 외부로 나갈 수 있는 중간 공간이며, 북동쪽 빈 공간은 커뮤니티 마켓이, 남동쪽 빈 공간에는 액티비티 공원이 마련되어 있다. 서쪽 방향으로, 포디움 공간은 선수, 직원, 고위 인사를 위해 지상에서 차량을 접근할 수 있는 별도의 동선이 만들어져 있다.
