Gangnam-gu Vocational Rehabilitation Center extended in a terraced form 

Vocational rehabilitation centers for people with developmental disabilities are not just spaces to stay for work but also facilities that provide various programs such as education, training, exchange, culture and physical education to adapt as a member of society. Gangnam-gu Vocational Rehabilitation Center, which opened in 2008, was extended in order to provide better welfare services and expansions of various vocational rehabilitation facilities.

The most prominent part of the new vocational rehabilitation center was the vertical extension, in which the surrounding context and eco-friendly elements were appropriately arranged to contain new functions. The existing two-story building, which had a U-shaped courtyard, was extended to seven stories, and a terraced design was applied for ample light on each floor. This terraced form connects to the part that faces the vocational rehabilitation center and draws the natural scenery into the building. Towards the expressway that is open to Tancheon (stream) on the other side, the minimum amount of windows were arranged on the massive form in order to establish the presence of the architecture.

In order to increase the utilization of the courtyard at the center of the U-shaped form, the existing ramp connecting to the second floor was demolished, and the folding door blurs the boundary between the building (interior) and the courtyard (exterior). In this way, the new center is imbued with the architect’s consideration for resting spaces. There are roof gardens made in terraced forms on every floor, and these spaces can be used as evacuation spaces for the disabled in the event of an emergency.

The facade of the existing building was reconstructed into a design that suits the new building, and light-toned finishing materials were used to allow the bright and open ambience as a welfare facility for the disabled to be felt. Moreover, it is also a compelling piece of work as an eco-friendly building that suits modern times with the horizontal and vertical awnings, rooftop greening, solar panels, etc.

테라스 형태로 증축된 강남구 작업재활센터

발달 장애인을 위한 직업재활센터는 장애인이 단순히 일을 위해 머무는 공간이 아니라 사회의 일원으로 적응하기 위한 교육, 훈련, 교류, 문화, 체육 등 다양한 프로그램을 함께 제공받을 수 있는 시설이다. 2008년에 개관됐던 강남구 직업재활센터는 더 나은 복지서비스와 다양한 직업재활시설의 확충을 위해 증축됐다.

새로운 직업재활센터의 가장 돋보이는 부분은 새로운 기능을 담기 위해서 주변 컨텍스트와 친환경적인 요소가 적절히 배치된 수직형 증축이다. ㄷ자 형태의 중정을 가지고 있던 2층의 기존 건물은 7층으로 증축됐으며, 각 층마다 충분한 채광을 위해 계단형의 디자인이 적용됐다. 이 계단형의 형태는 직업재활센터와 면하고 있는 공원 쪽과 연결되며, 자연의 경관을 건축물 안으로 끌어들인다. 반대편 탄천으로 열린 고속화 도로 쪽으로는 건축물의 존재감을 확고히 하기 위해 매시브(Massive)한 형태에 최소화의 창호만 배치되어 있다.

ㄷ자 형태 가운데의 중정 활용도를 높이기 위해 기존에 있던 2층 연결 경사로는 철거됐으며, 폴딩도어(Folding Door)가 건축물(내부)과 중정(외부)의 경계를 흐리게 만든다. 이렇게 새로운 센터는 휴식공간에 대한 건축가의 배려가 곳곳에 스며있다. 모든 층에는 테라스 형태로 만들어진 옥상정원이 있으며, 이 공간은 비상 시 장애인을 위한 피난공간으로 쓰일 수 있다.

기존 건축물의 입면은 새로운 건축물과 어울리는 디자인에 맞춰 재구성됐으며, 장애인 복지시설로서 밝고 개방적인 분위기가 느껴지도록 밝은 톤의 마감재가 사용됐다. 뿐만 아니라 수평·수직 차양, 옥상녹화, 태양광 패널 등으로 친환경적 건물로도 손색없는 건축물이다.
