The Museum is the main exhibition venue for 2019 Wulong Lanba Land Art Festival. In the mountains away from urban civilization, the architects use the experience gained from nature and apply just little construction to the earth landscape to make people re-focus on natural scenery and eventually return to nature. Since the reserved construction site of the museum is located on a small hillside, it was especially important to consider the experience of visitors when they are at different heights.

The museum was designed an elliptical ring as the major exhibition hall, which was lifted by four functional blocks such as reception, staff office, gift shop and special exhibition area, and used the mountain to dispel the volume of first floor blocks. Therefore, whether the visitors look up from the bottom of the slope or overlook the viewing platform in the distance, the first thing that comes into view is the oval exhibition hall. The entire art museum looks like floating in the air, especially when the lights turned on at night.

Standing in the center of the field and looking around, the visitors are 360 degrees surrounded by nature. The museum is focused on using the exhibition hall as an extension of the landscape, to allow people to stay in the same state as they can walk in any direction in natural terrain, that is, for a free continuous, direction-free building. Through the space separated by functional blocks on the first floor, visitors can enter and exit the central courtyard at will, as if they are in the middle of nature, which blurs the boundaries of the building and reduces its oppression to nature and people. The shear wall inside the main exhibition hall was combined with the display wall, such a combined space to make the overall structure lighter. The hidden building boundaries also give the exhibition hall maximum continuous visibility.

As a synonym for non-daily spaces, art museums and visitors are confined to relatively independent spaces, while the design of the Museum opens up the architecture, allowing art, nature and people to coexist in the same scene. The oval main exhibition hall uses large glass curtain wall as façade material. While admiring the land art works, people can enjoy the panoramic scenery in the mountains. In foggy weather, they can have the experience of strolling in the clouds. When coming to the central courtyard, people will find that the elliptical ring-shaped architectural boundary limits the sky to a fixed frame, just like a piece of land art.

산맥이 파노라마로 펼쳐지는 사색의 공간, 우롱 미술관

우롱 미술관은 2019 우롱 란바 랜드 아트 페스티벌의 주요 전시 공간으로 설계된 미술관이다. 건축가는 번잡한 도시에서 멀리 떨어진 산에서 얻은 영감으로, 이 곳의 관람객들이 자연 경관을 바라보고, 자연으로 회귀하는 풍경의 건축을 시도했다. 작은 언덕 지형에 자리잡은 미술관은 서로 다른 높이에서 방문객들의 풍부한 자연을 사색하는 경험을 제공하는 것이 중요했다.

미술관은 안내 데스크, 직원 사무실, 기념품샵, 특별전시구역으로 나뉘어 4개의 기능별 블록으로 구성된다. 2층의 타원형으로 설계된 곳이 우롱 미술관의 주요 전시공간이다. 2층을 부각시키기 위하여, 1층의 볼륨은 눈에 띄지 않도록 고려됐는데, 이 때 산의 지형이 이용되었다. 방문객은 아래 경사지에서 올려다 보거나 멀리서 미술관을 바라 볼 때, 가장 먼저 2층의 타원형 전시공간을 먼저 볼 수 있다. 이러한 건축가의 계획은 야간에 조명을 켰을 때 더욱 부각된다. 어두운 곳의 조명이 켜지면서 미술관은 마치 공중에 떠 있는 것처럼 몽환적인 형태로 보여지기 때문이다.

미술관의 중앙에 서서 둘러보면 360˚로 둘러싸인 자연을 바라볼 수 있다. 미술관은 전시 공간에 확장하기 위하여, 이 곳의 광활한 풍경을 이용한다. 사람들이 타원형의 공간 안에서 연속적이지도 않고, 정해진 방향으로 공간을 둘러볼 필요가 없기 때문에 어느 방향에서 걷든지, 자연으로 걸어 들어 가는 것처럼 느끼도록 만든다. 4개로 분리된 1층의 공간은 중앙과 통하는 비워진 공간들이 있다. 이 곳을 통해 관람객들은 미술관 중정을 자유롭게 드나들 수 있다. 이러한 자유로운 출입은 밖과 안의 공간적 경계를 흐리게 하고, 자연과 사람의 관계를 더욱 긴밀하게 만들어 준다. 주요 전시 공간의 내부 전단벽은 전시용 벽과 조화를 이루면서, 전체 구조를 밝게 만드는 통합 공간을 연출한다. 2층의 메인 전시 공간은 투명한 대형 유리 커튼월이 사용됐다. 자연과 건축물 사이의 희미해지는 경계는 전시공간에서 최대화 된다. 전시 공간에서 폭넓게 연속되는 자연의 풍경을 바라볼 수 있기 때문이다.

우롱 미술관은 이런 자연 풍경들로 방문객을 비일상의 공간으로 안내한다. 우롱 미술관에서는 건축을 통해 예술, 자연, 사람, 이 세가지가 동일한 공간안에서 공존한다고 느낄 수 있다. 미술 작품을 감상하면서 사람들은 산에서 탁 트인 풍경을 함께 즐길 수 있으며, 안개가 자욱한 날씨에는 구름 속을 걷는 신선같은 경험을 할 수도 있다. 미술관 중정의 빈 공간에서는 타원형 고리 모양의 건축물이 마치 미술품을 전시하는 프레임처럼 하늘을 가둬놓고 전시하는 것 처럼 느낄 수 있을 것이다.
