EVENT HOUSE

This house was built for a professor at an art school and his wife. The site is located on a hill with a wide slope and vast view to the northwest, and because it faces the mountain to the south, the house’s orientation and view cannot be planned to be facing the same direction. After the husband’s retirement, the couple wanted their house to be not just a place they lived in, but also a starting space for diverse social activities. For this purpose, they needed a building separated from their living space, an independent study and atelier for the husband, and a multi-purpose room with a capacity of 20 people.

With such site conditions and the client’s requirements, we established the basic goal of creating an adaptable space that can be a venue for various events, while maximizing the northwest view by means of a cross section plan that utilizes the slope of the site. To achieve this, we positioned the living space on the upper part of the slope facing south, detached from the main building, and connected the two buildings at the bottom of the slope, which is a multi-purposed space to accommodate different events.
We designed a stepped courtyard between the two buildings over the upper and lower levels as the principal spatial device. This spatial heart of the house is the most interesting event space; it connects the upper and lower levels spatially while having programmatic flexibility that can accommodate various events by expanding the multipurpose space. Also, by providing an
observation deck above that connects the two houses, we created the most important viewing space that maximizes the house’s view.

The exterior and interior finishes that make up the house consist of an achromatic skin using dark gray brick and zinc panels and light gray base panels so that the house naturally integrates with the surrounding natural environment. The dominant color scheme for the interior is also achromatic, joined by the natural tone of birch panels, so that the landscape can be viewed through the opening in the achromatic interior. By spatially connecting internal and external architectural elements, the spatial scale of the house is expanded, as external space is perceived to be internal space and vice versa.

An external insulation system was applied to the entire exterior of the house including the roof, and system windows and double windows were installed. Installing a geothermal boiler as the main heating system, along with a fireplace and solar panels, increased the thermal efficiency of the house furthermore. For measures against the winter season, the residential area faces the south, openings were planned carefully, and we used a material with large heat capacity for the exterior. In addition, the heating load is reduced owing to the deep courtyard finished with bricks, which stores heat during the day. This heat is distributed to the entire house throughout the night. And during summer months, the rear of the multipurpose space and folding door between the stepped inner courtyard is opened, promoting ventilation to create a Venturi effect that passes through the center of the house. 이 주택은 미대교수인 남편과 부인을 위해 설계되었다. 대지는 북서쪽으로 넓은 경사면과 광대한 조망을 가진 언덕에 위치하며, 남쪽에 인접한 산을 면하고 있어, 주택의 향과 조망을 동일한 방향으로 계획할 수 없는 특수한 조건을 가졌다. 부부는 남편의 은퇴 이후, 주택이 단순히 그들의 거주 목적만이 아닌 다양한 사회활동의 공간적 기반으로 활용되기를 원했다. 이를 위해 부부가 거주하는 본채와 완전히 독립된 별채, 남편을 위한 독립된 서재 및 아뜰리에, 20명 수용규모의 다목적 공간을 요구하였다.

이러한 대지조건과 건축주의 요구사항을 반영하여 대지의 경사를 활용한 단면계획을 통하여 북서쪽 조망을 극대화했고 동시에 다양한 이벤트를 소화할 수 있는 가변적 공간 계획을 기본 목표로 설정하였다. 이를 위해 경사를 활용한 상부 레벨에 남향을 면한 본채와 별채로 분리된 주거 공간을 배치하고, 하부 레벨에 두 동을 연결시키며 다양한 이벤트를 수용하는 다목적 공간을 계획하였다.
또, 본채와 별채 사이에 하부와 상부 레벨에 걸치는 계단식 중정을 제안하였다. 이는 주택의 공간적 중심이자 가장 흥미로운 이벤트 공간으로 상하부 레벨을 공간적으로 연계시키면서 동시에 다목적 공간의 확장을 통한 다양한 이벤트를 소화하는 프로그램적 가변성을 갖는다. 또한, 그 상부에 본채와 별채를 연결하는 전망 데크를 만들어 주택이 가진 조망을 극대화하는 가장 주요한 조망공간을 구성하였다.

주택을 구성하는 외부와 내부의 마감은 짙은 회색 톤의 전벽돌과 징크 패널, 밝은 회색 톤의 베이스 패널을 활용한 무채색의 외피를 구성하여 주택이 주변 자연환경과 동화되게 하였다. 또한, 내부에도 무채색 계열의 주조색과 자작나무 패널에 자연적 색감을 적용하여 무채색인 내부에서 개구부를 통해 외부경치를 담을 수 있도록 계획하였다. 내외부의 건축적 요소를 공간적으로 연계시켜 외부 공간이 내부공간으로, 내부공간이 외부공간의 연장으로 인지되게 하여 주택의 공간감을 확장시켰다.

지붕면을 포함한 전체 주택 외피에 외단열 시스템을 적용하고, 시스템 창호와 2중 창호를 설치하였다. 또한, 주 난방시스템으로 지열 보일러와 함께 벽난로, 태양광 패널을 사용해 주택의 열효율을 높였다. 특히 동절기에 대한 대응으로 기본적인 남향에 면하는 주거공간, 적정 개구부 계획, 열용량이 큰 외피재료를 사용하였고, 추가로 주택중심에 위치한 전벽돌로 마감된 깊숙한 중정 공간에 저장된 낮 동안의 열이 늦은 밤까지 주택전체에 온기를 전달하게 함으로 난방부하를 절감하였다. 하절기에는 다목적 공간 후면과 계단식 중정 사이의 폴딩도어를 개방해 주택의 중심을 관통하는 벤츄리 효과를 만들어 환기를 할 수 있도록 했고, 수공간을 통한 기화냉각을 도입하여 여름철 냉방부하를 줄였다.
