A Coconut, Planted at the Corner of Galidan-gil
A shopping street called ‘Gyeongridan-gil of Daejeon’ in Galma-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, is a hot spot for MZ generations these days. As fresh and exotic commercial buildings, contrasting with old buildings, began to be created, people are coming back to the city where they were cut off due to aging. [ COːONUT ] in a corner of Galidan-gil is a coconut fruit (architecture) born by planting a seed (the beginning of an architectural plan) on a land (the image of the old city around the land) where development was stopped. It began with an interesting idea like wouldn’t it be the starting point for urban regeneration and regional revitalization if the building itself has the vitality of life and the land is revived.
The corner of the building has an angular round shape. When faced with the corner, we intended people to feel softness and familiarity, and in addition, warm-colored beige danto tiles were attached vertically to create a facade with a rich expression. Dantotile, the exterior main material of the building, features a three-dimensional surface shaped like a branch, which is thin and long vertical stripes like a coconut shell, and looks like a coconut standing from afar. The curved shape of the mass and the vertical line of the neat material are heterogeneous, but rather provide various eye candies with attractive harmony.
The cafe on the first floor of the building has a series of large open windows, maximizing visual continuity from the inside to the outside and breaking down the boundaries between the inside and the outside, making the open view and space appear naturally. The interior scenery of the cafe looks like a picture, and it also plays a role in creating an impressive atmosphere of the city. On the other hand, the remaining windows except for the first floor were minimized to provide reversal aesthetic and create an understatement atmosphere to arouse curiosity about the space for people walking on the street. The round arched entrance is the first place to be seen by visitors, making the first impression of the building, promoting the influx of visitors and giving us a welcome greeting. As a result, we will remember the beginning of the building and this street of the day together.
갈리단길 한 모퉁이에 심은 코코넛 하나
‘대전의 경리단길’로 불리는 대전 서구 갈마동 상가 거리, 갈리단길은 요즘 MZ세대들의 관심이 집중되는 명소다. 오래된 건물과 대비되는 신선하고 이색적인 상가 건물이 생기기 시작하면서 노후화로 발길이 끊어졌던 도시로 사람들이 다시 찾아오고 있다. 갈리단길 한 코너에 있는 [ COːONUT ]은 개발이 멈춰있던 땅(대지 주변 구도심의 이미지)에 씨앗 하나(건축 계획의 시작)를 심으며 태어난 코코넛 열매(건축물)다. 건축물 자체가 삶의 활력을 가지고, 땅을 다시 살아나게 만들면 도시재생과 지역 활성화의 시발점이 될 수 있지 않을까? 하는 재미있는 생각으로 시작되었다.
건물의 코너 부분은 각지지 않은 라운드 형태다. 코너와 마주했을 때, 부드러움과 친숙함을 느끼게 했고, 더불어 따뜻한 색감의 베이지색 단토타일을 세로로 엇갈리게 부착하여 풍부한 표정의 파사드를 만들었다. 건축물의 외부 주재료인 단토타일은 나뭇가지를 형상화한 입체감 있는 표면이 특징인데, 덕분에 코코넛 껍질처럼 얇고 긴 세로 줄무늬이며, 멀리서는 마치 코코넛이 서 있는 모습처럼 보인다. 매스의 곡선 형태와 단정한 재료의 수직선은 이질적이지만 오히려 매력적인 조화로 다채로운 눈요기를 선사한다.
건축물의 1층 카페는 크게 뚫린 통창이 연속적으로 이어져 있어서 내부에서 외부까지의 시각적인 연속성을 극대화하고 내·외부 사이의 경계를 허물어 탁 트인 시야와 공간을 자연스럽게 나타나게 만든다. 내부 카페의 풍경이 마치 하나의 그림처럼 보이고, 도시의 인상적인 분위기를 연출하는 데에도 한몫한다. 반면, 1층을 제외한 나머지 창들은 최소화해 반전미를 제공하고, 절제적인 분위기를 연출해 거리를 걷는 사람들에게 이 공간에 대해 궁금증을 유발할 수 있도록 계획했다. 둥근 아치형 출입구는 방문객에게 가장 먼저 보이는 곳으로 건물의 첫인상이 되어주며, 방문객의 유입을 도모하고 우리에게 반가운 인사를 건넬 것이다. 그로 인해 우리는 건축물의 처음을, 그리고 그날의 이 거리를 함께 기억할 것이다.
