Milan 44: auto-parts warehouse transformed into vibrant local market Designed by Francisco Pardo Arquitecto, in collaboration with architect Julio Amezcua, Milan 44 is an urban-regeneration project located in Colonia Juarez, Mexico City. The project transforms an old four-storey warehouse that was originally home to an auto-parts store into an urban market that reactivates a neighborhood, which connects two entirely contrasting areas. On one side, the booming business district that lines the emblematic Paseo de la Reforma, and on the other side, the lively epicenter of hipster subculture, Colonia Roma Norte.
This area, which has been in decay since the 1985 earthquake, is currently experiencing a slow gentrification process. Centrally located and rich in history, it has been equipped with new infrastructure and now holds the genetic code for the city’s future development.
Transforming the existing building according to the new dynamics of the area has been the main challenge for the architectural firm, who decided to integrate a regular grid of concrete beams, columns and slabs, originally conceived from a utilitarian perspective, into the polydynamic venue’s new public role. Left exposed like a raw skeleton, the reticular structure is the framework for a two-storey local market, restaurants, and several private commercial spaces including a barber’s shop and a yoga studio. The new public program intrinsically and physically forms an extension of the city itself: the former warehouse with its blind facades vigorously shakes off its skin, opening up and inviting the urban fabric to come in.
While maintaining its original scale and structure, the building has undergone a complete metamorphosis: a green staircase has been added to generate fluid vertical circulation. Acting like a fil-rouge, this element connects the spaces and invites visitors to explore the building extensively. “Through it, the street folds to the inside and upwards” says Francisco Pardo, founder of the architectural practice. “it’s like a vortex that transversely crosses the building, pulling the street right up to the rooftop”.
The architectural peak culminates on the top floor, which is also open to the public and hosts a beer bar: in this way, the Milan 44 project gives back to the city much more than just the ground floor of a standard building, which is typically designated for commercial use. In its place, an entirely fresh, dynamic venue has emerged, in homage to the collectivity that embodies the radical change embracing the area.
Milan 44 : 활기찬 지역 시장으로 변모한 자동차 부품 창고
건축가 Francisco Pardo와 Julio Amezcua가 공동으로 설계한 Milan 44는 멕시코 시티 Colonia Juarez의 도시 재생 프로젝트이다. 이 프로젝트는 자동차 부품 상점이 있던 오래된 4층 창고를 변형시켜 대조되는 두 지역을 연결하고, 근교 지역을 재 활성화하는 도시 시장으로 전환한 사례이다. 한쪽에는 Paseo de la Reforma라는 상징적인 상업 지구가 있고 다른 쪽에는 활발한 최신 문화의 진원지인 Colonia Roma Norte가 있다. 1985년 지진 이후 쇠락한 이 지역은 지금 서서히 젠트리피케이션 과정을 겪고 있다. 또한 이 지역은 역사가 풍부한 곳이고 새로운 인프라가 갖춰져 있으며 이제는 이 도시의 미래 발전을 위한 유전자 코드를 보유하고 있다.
이 지역의 새로운 역동성에 따라 콘크리트 보, 기둥, 슬래브의 규칙적인 그리드를 통해 동적인 장소를 새로운 공공시설로 만드는 것은 실용주의적 관점에서 보았을 때 설계사의 도전이었다. 자연스럽게 노출된 그물 모양의 구조는 2층짜리 재래시장과 식당, 제과점, 이발소, 요가 스튜디오를 포함한 여러 개인 상업 공간을 위한 뼈대이다. 새로운 공공 프로그램은 본질적으로 그리고 물리적으로 도시 자체의 확장을 이루고 있다. 블라인드 입면이 있는 이전 창고는 자신의 외피를 털어내고 도시 구조가 들어오도록 한다.
원래의 규모와 구조를 유지하면서 건물은 완전히 변형되었다. 유연한 수직 순환을 만들기 위해 녹색 계단이 추가되었다. 공통의 실(Fil-rouge)처럼 행동하는 이 요소는 각 공간을 연결하며 방문자가 이 건물을 두루 탐험할 수 있도록 한다. Francisco Pardo는“ 이 계단을 통해 거리가 안쪽과 위쪽으로 연결된다.”고 말하며“ 그것은 마치 거리를 옥상까지 바로 잡아당기면서 건물을 가로로 횡단하는 소용돌이와 같다.”라고 전한다.
이 건물의 건축적 정점은 최상층인데, 이 공간은 공공에 개방되는 맥주 바가 자리 잡고 있다. 이러한 방법은 일반적인 도시 상업 건물의 지상층으로 돌아가는 역할을 한다. 그 자리에서 이 지역을 포용하는 근본적 변화인 공동체성에 경의를 표하며 완전히 신선하고 역동적인 장소가 등장한 것이다.
