BIG and LEGO bring the toy scale of the classic LEGO brick to architectural scale with LEGO House, forming vast exhibition spaces and public squares that embody the culture and values at the heart of all LEGO experiences. Due to its central location in the heart of Billund, the 23m tall LEGO House is conceived as an urban space as much as an experience center. 21 overlapping blocks are placed like individual buildings, framing a 2,000㎡ LEGO square that is illuminated through the cracks and gaps between the volumes.
The plaza appears like an urban cave without any visible columns and is publicly accessible, allowing visitors and citizens of Billund to shortcut through the building. The LEGO square is energized by an urban character, welcoming locals and visitors to the cafe, restaurant, LEGO store and conference facilities. Above the square, a cluster of galleries overlap to create a continuous sequence of exhibitions. Each gallery is color-coded in LEGO’s primary colors so wayfinding through the exhibitions becomes a journey through the color spectrum.
The first and second floors include four play zones arranged by color and programmed with activities that represent a certain aspect of a child’s learning: red is creative, blue is cognitive, green is social, and yellow is emotional. Guests of all ages can have an immersive and interactive experience, express their imagination, and not least be challenged by meeting other builders from all over the world. The top of the building is crowned by the Masterpiece Gallery, a collection of LEGO fans’ beloved creations that pay tribute to the LEGO community.
The Masterpiece Gallery is made of the iconic 2x4 LEGO brick and showcases art beneath eight circular skylights that resemble the studs of the brick. Like the golden ratio, the proportions of the brick are nested in the geometries of everything manmade in the building, from the glazed ceramic tiles in the steps and walls to the overall 21 block scheme. Atop the Masterpiece Gallery, citizens and visitors can get a 360° panoramic view of the city. Some of the rooftops can be accessed via pixelated public staircases that double as informal auditoria for people watching or seating for performances.
The History Collection at the lower level is where visitors can experience an archival immersion into the LEGO company and brand’s story. The Vault - located underneath LEGO Square - is where children and AFoLs (Adult Fans of LEGO) can witness the first edition of almost every LEGO set ever manufactured, including the new 774-piece, 197-step kit replicating the stacked-block formation of the LEGO House.

BIG 창립 파트너 Bjarke Ingels에 의하면, 레고 하우스는 레고 벽돌의 무한한 가능성을 그대로 표현한 것이다. 모든 연령대의 아이들은 창의력을 통해 도구들을 가지고 자신의 세계를 만들 수 있고 놀이를 통해 그 세상 속에서 머물 수 있게 된다.
최고의 건축물, 즉 레고가 하는 역할은 모든 사람들이 현재의 상황보다 더 흥미진진하고 표현력이 풍부한 새로운 세계를 상상할 수 있게 하고 현실로 만들어 주는 기술을 제공하는 것이다. 이것이 바로 매일 아이들이 레고 벽돌을 가지고 하는 것이다. 또한 이것은 Billund를 아이들을 위한 수도가 되기 위해 한발짝 더 가까운 단계로 가는 걸음의 일환으로, 오늘날 실제 벽돌로 레고 하우스에서 우리가 하고 있는 일이다.
BIG과 LEGO는 장난감 수준의 고전적인 레고 벽돌을 레고 하우스라는 실제 건축물 규모로 가져와 모든 레고 경험의 핵심에 문화와 가치를 구체화하는 광대한 전시 공간과 공공 광장을 구상하였다. Billund 중심 한복판에 위치해 있는 23m높이의 레고 하우스는 경험 중심 장소인 만큼 도시적인 공간으로서 인식된다.
21개의 겹쳐지는 블록은 개별 건물처럼 자리잡고 있으며, 볼륨 사이 사이의 균열과 틈을 통해 비춰지는 2,000㎡ 레고 광장을 형성한다. 이 광장은 눈에 보이는 기둥없이 도시 동굴처럼 표현되었으며, 공공적으로 접근이 가능하고, Billund 시민 및 방문객들은 건물을 지름길로도 이용할 수 있다. 레고 광장은 카페나 레스토랑, 레고 스토어 또는 다른 회의 시설에서 지역 사람들과 방문객들을 환영하는 도시적인 특성에 힘입어 활기가 넘친다.
광장 위에는 전시의 연속성을 만들어 내는 일련의 갤러리들이 겹쳐져 있다. 각각의 갤러리는 레고의 기본 색상으로 입혀져 있어 전시회를 통해 색상 스펙트럼을 통과하는 여정이 된다. 1층과 2층은 색과 아이들의 교육적인 면을 나타내는 활동이 계획된 네 군데의 놀이 공간이 있다. 예를 들어, 빨간색은 창의적이고, 파란색은 인지적, 초록색은 사회적이며, 노란색은 감정적인 곳을 나타낸다. 모든 연령층의 이용자들은 몰입이 가능하고 상호간의 교류가 있는 경험을 할 수 있고, 상상력을 표출하며, 특히 전세계에서 온 다른 건축가와의 만남을 통해 도전할 수 있다. 건물의 맨 꼭대기에는 레고 팬들에게 사랑받는 창조물 컬렉션이 있는 명작 갤러리가 있다.
명작 갤러리는 상징적인 2x4 크기의 레고 벽돌과 벽돌의 스터드를 닮은 8개의 원형 채광창 아래에 진열장으로 이루어져 있다. 황금 비율과 마찬가지로, 벽돌의 비율은 계단과 벽의 윤기가 나는 세라믹 타일에서부터 전체 21개의 벽돌 계획에 이르기까지 건물에 존재하는 사람이 만든 모든 것이 기하학적 구조에 내포된다. 명작 갤러리 꼭대기에서 시민과 방문객은 도시를 360° 파노라마로 볼 수 있다. 옥상의 일부는 공연을 보거나 앉아 있는 사람들을 위한 비공식 청중석을 두 배로 픽셀화 된 공공 계단을 통해 드나들 수 있다.
저층에 있는 역사 소장품관은 방문객들이 레고 회사와 브랜드 이야기에 대한 기록 보관을 알아볼 수 있다. 레고 광장 아래에 위치한 Vault는 아이들과 레고의 성인 팬이 새로운 774 피스 및 레고 하우스의 블록이 적재된 형태를 복제한 197단계 키트를 포함한 지금까지 만들어진 모든 레고 세트의 첫번째 버전을 볼 수 있는 곳이다.
