Three unique houses, tied together by a common design language, have been built in a mews set behind gardens of Victorian houses. The buildings are set around and look into a shared central courtyard. A private courtyard forms the centre of each open plan ground floor, with living and studio spaces on either side.

Inspired by views of ivy growing over trees in wintertime - all three houses are clad with striking green walls, trained to a geometric pattern. The vertical gardens are united by green bands across the courtyard, set between resin bound gravel. The branches of the green walls provide privacy to the large triple glazed windows, which in turn provide ample natural light and glimpsed views of trees in neighbouring gardens.

Rockbourne Mews is a redevelopment of an urban brownfield site with a small sustainable community of 3 live/work houses arranged around a multi-functional shared outdoor courtyard. The buildings create a balance between natural light and thermal performance by using triple glazing as well as high performance insulation to walls, floors and roof.

Land-locked on all sides, the architects had the challenge of providing light to each room, without compromising privacy and outlook; in a scheme conversant with its patchwork context, constructed with the sensitivity which accompanies 32 Party Wall Awards, and delivered on an ambitious budget.

The communal courtyard is landscaped with a geometric mix of resinbound gravel and planting beds, connecting back to brick piers. The beds provide footholds from which climbing plants grow, supported on a treillage mesh, which branches across the face of the buildings, tracing out the motif of the elevations and providing privacy and shade to occupants. The geometric pattern features in project graphics, textile-prints and also in the clients’ wedding rings.

Central to each of the open plan ground floors is a semi-private outdoor room / courtyard. This loggia space is multifunctional, serving as a grand entrance porch, an external terrace, an extension to the living space and as an atrium to the surrounding rooms. The flying brick beams of houses, define the boundary of the private and communal space, creating a clear gateway without barriers.

Each house is tailored to its position on the site, fashioned from the same building fabric, and gathered together using a common design thread. Atypical to a traditional mews, the designs are light and airy, with a high proportion of glazing to solid. The pale ‘stock’ bricks and glazing reflect light into the communal courtyard even during winter months.

The large two-storey triple-glazed window openings are framed by slender brick piers, which are braced by the construction of the first floor. The steel structure and bespoke masonry supports over the curved roof were designed in 3D to accurately unite the crafted brickwork geometry of the inclined beams. Lifted in two corners to bring light into the living space, this roof is finished internally with a softly reflective, biscuit-jointed ‘armadillo’ ceiling. A sustainable drainage system (SuDS) incorporates a combination of green roofs, green walls, planted filtration strips, a rainwater-harvesting tank, a 17,000 litre attenuation tank and 2 ‘drinking policeman’ - which the architects invented - to slow the flow of water, as well as slowing traffic. 포레스트 뮤스 흔한 디자인 언어로 한데 묶인 세 채의 독특한 집들이 빅토리아 시대풍의 주택 정원 뒤 세워진 거리 위로 지어졌다. 건물은 중앙의 공동 중정을 중심으로 배치되어 있고 중정을 바라볼 수 있다. 각 건물의 1층 중심에는 개인 정원이 배치되어 있으며 양옆으로 거실과 스튜디오가 있다.

겨울철 나무 위로 담쟁이 덩굴이 자라나는 광경에 영감을 얻은 3개의 집은 기하학적 패턴을 가지는 두드러진 녹색 벽으로 덮여있다. 수직 정원들은 중앙 정원의 합성 수지와 자갈로 마무리된 바닥 사이를 가로지르는 녹색 밴드에 의해 연결된다. 녹색 벽의 가지는 큰 3중 유리창에 프라이버시를 제공한다. 이 유리창으로 충분한 양의 자연광이 유입되고 이웃집 정원 나무의 모습을 살짝살짝 볼 수 있다.

Rockbourne Mews는 주거와 사무실용 주택 3채가 모여 만든 자그마한 지속가능한 커뮤니티로 도심 재개발 대지 위에 만든 재개발 프로젝트이다. 주택은 다양한 기능을 할 수 있는 공용 야외 중정 주위로 배치되어 있다. 건물의 3중 창과 벽과 마루, 지붕의 고성능 단열은 자연채광과 집안 온도의 균형을 맞춰준다.

사방이 둘러싸여 있어 사생활 침해 없이 각 공간에 충분한 양의 채광을 전달하는 것은 건축가에게 큰 도전이었다. 조건 하나하나가 신중한 계획에 따라 시공되었고 이에 32 Party Wall Awards를 수상하고 엄청난 예산을 받았다.

공용 중정은 합성수지와 자갈로 마무리된 바닥과 뒤쪽 벽돌 기둥을 연결하는 식물 화단이 형성하는 기하학적 무늬로 꾸며져 있다. 화단은 덩굴 식물이 자랄 수 있는 발판을 제공하고 식물은 격자 메시를 통해 지지되고 건물의 입면으로 뻗어 나간다. 건물 입면 디자인의 윤곽을 만들고 거주자에게 그림자와 프라이버시를 제공한다. 그래픽과 타일 프린팅, 그리고 건축주의 결혼반지에 있는 기하학적 무늬가 이 프로젝트의 특징이다.

중앙으로 개방된 1층 평면은 반 사유 실외 공간이자 중정이다. 이 로지아 공간은 다기능을 한다. 커다란 현관 역할을 하기도 하고 야외 테라스가 되기도 하며, 거실의 연장선이 되기도 하고 주변 공간으로 향하는 아트리움이기도 하다. 떠있는 벽돌 보는 개인 공간과 공용공간의 경계선을 만들고 장벽 없이 뚫려있는 입구를 만들어낸다. 각 주택은 대지의 각자 위치에 잘 들어맞으며 같은 건축 재료로 만들어졌다. 그리고 일맥상통하는 디자인 축이 있다. 일반적인 거리의 모습과는 닮지 않았지만, 디자인은 밝고 바람이 잘 통하며 건물은 빛을 받아 반짝인다. 옅은 색의‘ 비축된’ 벽돌과 유리는 겨울 동안에도 공용 중정에 빛을 품을 수 있게 해준다.

2층 높이의 큰 3중창 개구부는 얇은 벽돌 기둥으로 지지되고 있으며 벽돌 기둥은 1층 프레임에 의해 지지되고 있다. 강구조와 굽어진 지붕 위 맞춤식 조적 지지대는 기울어진 보의 형상을 조각된 벽돌에 정확하게 맞물리게 하기 위해서 3D로 디자인 되었다. 지붕의 두 모서리는 거실 공간에 빛이 들어오게 하기 위해 들어올려졌으며 천장은 살짝 반짝이는 비스켓 조이너를 이용한‘ 아르마딜로’ 천장으로 마무리 되었다. 지속 가능한 배수장치 (SuDS) 는 녹색 지붕, 녹색 벽, 식물 여과장치, 우수 이용 탱크, 17,000L 크기의 희석 탱크, 그리고 건축가가 개발한 두 개의‘ 마시는 경찰관’과 협동하여 물의 흐름을 지연시킬 뿐 아니라 천천히 움직이게 한다. 돌나물과 야생화는 생물의 다양성을 증대시키고 외관을 예쁘게 만든다. 글 제공: STOLON STUDIO
