고층 빌딩이 밀집한 로테르담의 베인하번에 자리한 카사노바는 입주민이 소통할 수 있는 공간이다. 바코드 아키텍츠는 2013년 경기 대침체가 끝난 후 주거시설 ‘더 뮤즈(the Muse)’와 인접하게 카사노바를 개발했다. 사방이 트여 있는 삼각형 형태의 상징적인 타워는 비슷한 형태의 오피스 건물이 가득한 로테르담 도심에 신선한 활력을 불어넣고, 도심에 새로운 연결 포인트를 형성한다. 이는 새로운 고층 건물 유형의 제안이다.
카사노바는 타워 하단의 면적을 상단에 분배하여 받침대 위의 조각상이 균형을 잡는 듯한 상징적 형태로 완성됐다. 날렵한 타워부는 주변 건물의 시야와 채광을 방해하지 않도록 했다. 삼각형의 평면 계획은 도시 전경을 300도 파노라마로 바라볼 수 있는 특별한 경험을 제공하고, 모서리마다 계획된 넓은 발코니는 아침부터 저녁까지 햇빛을 들게 한다. 조각상 같은 타워의 콘셉트는 입면 디자인에도 반영되었다. 수작업으로 만든 적갈색 석재 입면재는 공예적이고 따뜻한 느낌을, 석재의 울퉁불퉁한 표면은 빛의 변화에 따라 시시각각 새로운 느낌을 준다.
고층 건물은 파괴적이고 고립된 공간이라는 고정관념에서 벗어나, ‘더 뮤즈’와 ‘카사노바’는 다양한 부대시설을 공유하며 시너지를 내는 네트워크 시티로 계획되었다. 5층에는 루프탑 가든, 주방, 손님을 위한 호텔, 공유 업무 공간, 미팅룸, 피트니스 등의 다양한 부대시설이 있어 입주민이 모여 소통할 수 있다. 출입 로비는 한 블록 전체를 차지하여 도시에 새로운 동선을 제시하며, 입주민이 모든 방향에서 출입할 수 있게 하였다. 또한 주차장과 주거공간은 분리하여 입주민이 아트리움에 진입하여 엘리베이터를 타도록 유도한다. 이러한 공간 계획으로 2차원을 넘어 3차원으로 연결된 새로운 커뮤니티 개념을 제시했다.
Located in Beinhavn, Rotterdam, which is dense with high-rise buildings, CasaNova is a space for residents to connect. Barcode Architects developed CasaNova adjacent to the residential development ‘the Muse’ in 2013, after the end of the Great Recession. The iconic all-sided triangular-shaped tower breathes fresh vitality into Rotterdam's city center, which is filled with office buildings of similar shapes, and creates a new connection point in the city center. It is a proposal for a new type of skyscraper.
CasaNova distributes the area at the bottom of the tower to the top, creating a symbolic form that resembles a statue balancing on a pedestal. The slender tower was designed to avoid obstructing the light and view of the surrounding buildings. The triangular floor plan provides a unique experience with a 300-degree panoramic view of the city, while the spacious balconies planned at each corner bring in sunlight from morning to evening. The concept of a sculptural tower is also reflected in the elevation design. The hand-crafted reddish-brown stone facade material gives the building a crafted and warm sentiment, while the uneven surface of the stone makes it look different depending on the changing light.
Breaking away from the stereotype of skyscrapers as destructive and isolating spaces, The Muse and CasaNova are planned as a networked city where various facilities are shared to create synergy. On the fifth floor, a rooftop garden, kitchen, hotel rooms for guests, shared workspace, meeting rooms, gym, and other facilities are available for residents to gather and interact. The entrance lobby occupies an entire block, creating a new circulation in the city and allowing residents to enter and exit from all directions. The parking space and residential space are separated, inviting residents to enter the atrium and take the elevator. The spatial plan goes to present a new concept of community that is connected not only two-dimensionally but in three dimensions.
