Located across Britain and abroad, Maggie’s Centres are conceived to provide a welcoming ‘home away from home’, a place of refuge where people affected by cancer can find emotional and practical support. Inspired by the blueprint for a new type of care set out by Maggie Keswick Jencks, they place great value upon the power of architecture to lift the spirits and help in the process of therapy. The design of the Manchester centre aims to establish a domestic atmosphere in a garden setting and, appropriately, is first glimpsed at the end of a tree-lined street, a short walk from The Christie Hospital and its leading oncology unit.
The building occupies a sunny site and is arranged over a single storey, keeping its profile low and reflecting the residential scale of the surrounding streets. The roof rises in the centre to create a mezzanine level, naturally illuminated by triangular roof lights and it is supported by lightweight timber lattice beams. The beams act as natural partitions between different internal areas, visually dissolving the architecture into the surrounding gardens. The centre combines a variety of spaces, from intimate private niches to a library, exercise rooms and places to gather and share a cup of tea. The heart of the building is the kitchen, which is centred on a large, communal table.
Institutional references, such as corridors and hospital signs have been banished in favour of home-like spaces. To that end the materials palette combines warm, natural wood and tactile fabrics. Staff will be unobtrusive, yet close and accessible. Support offices are placed on a mezzanine level positioned on top of a wide central spine, with toilets and storage spaces below, maintaining natural visual connections across the building.
Throughout the centre, there is a focus on natural light, greenery and garden views. The rectilinear plan is punctuated by landscaped courtyards and the entire western elevation extends into a wide veranda, which is sheltered from the rain by the deep overhang of the roof. Sliding glass doors open the building up to a garden setting created by Dan Pearson Studio. Each treatment and counselling room on the eastern facade faces its own private garden. The south end of the building, extends to embrace a greenhouse - a celebration of light and nature - The greenhouse provides a garden retreat, a space for people to gather, to work with their hands and enjoy the therapeutic qualities of nature and the outdoors. It will be a space to grow flowers and other produce that can be used at the centre giving the patients a sense of purpose at a time when they may feel at their most vulnerable.
The centre, designed and engineered by Foster + Partners, also features bespoke furniture designed by Norman Foster with Mike Holland who heads out the industrial design team in the practice. These include kitchen units and table, sideboards and other shelving units. Text offer: Foster + Partners
maggie’s 암센터 브리튼 섬에 걸쳐 위치하고 있는 Maggie’s 암센터는‘ 내 집처럼 편안한 곳’으로 인식되고 있다. 이 곳은 일종의 피난처로, 암의 영향을 받는 사람들이 감정적이고 실질적인 도움을 받을 수 있는 곳이다. Maggie Keswick Jencks에 의해 구상된 새로운 종류의 청사진에 영감을 받아, 치료과정에서 좋은 기운을 북돋우고 도움이 되도록 건축의 힘을 불어넣는다. 맨체스터 센터의 디자인은 정원 형식의 가정적인 분위기를 만들었다. 센터 건물은 Christie 병원과 그 병원의 종양 연구 병동에서 조금만 걸어 나오면 가로수 길 끝에서 그 모습을 만날 수 있다.
건물은 햇볕이 잘 드는 대지에 자리잡고 있는 단층 건물이다. 주변 거리에 있는 주거용 건물의 크기를 반영하여 전체적인 높이는 낮다. 중이층을 만들기 위해서 센터 건물 지붕이 솟아 있다. 삼각형 모양 지붕으로 자연광이 들어오고 경량 목재 격자 보에 의해 지지된다. 보는 자연스럽게 실내 공간을 나누어 주는 역할을 하고 시각적으로 건축물이 주위 정원에 녹아들게 해준다. 센터는 다양한 공간을 결합하였다. 사적인 공간부터 도서관, 운동실, 그리고 한데 모여 차 한 잔 나눌 수 있는 곳까지. 건물의 중심은 부엌이다.
큰 규모의 중앙에 공용 테이블이 있다. 복도나 병원 표지판같이 보호시설을 나타내는 것들은 집과 같은 친숙한 공간을 만들어내는 데 적합하지 않아 사용하지 않았다. 이러한 이유로 따뜻한 분위기의 원목과 촉감이 좋은 직물이 재료로 사용되었다. 직원들은 불필요하게 관심을 끌지 않을 것이나 언제나 가까이에 있고 쉽게 만날 수 있다. 지원실은 건물 중심 중이층에 자리잡고 있다. 화장실과 창고는 아래 공간에 있으며 건물 모든 공간에 시각적 연계성이 자연스럽게 이루어지도록 하였다.
전체적으로 자연광과 식물, 그리고 정원을 바라볼 수 있는 전경에 중심을 두고 있다. 직선적인 평면은 정원에 의해 그 끝을 맺고, 서쪽의 입면 전체는 넓은 베란다로 확장된다. 이 베란다 위로 깊게 튀어나온 지붕은 비를 피할 수 있는 장소가 되기도 한다. 슬라이딩 유리 도어는 Dan Pearson Studio가 제작한 정원으로 건물을 개방한다. 동쪽 파사드에 있는 상담실과 치료실도 개별 정원을 가지고 있다. 건물 남쪽 끝에는 온실(빛과 자연의 축제)이 자리하고 있다. 온실은 조용한 정원을 만들어 주기도 하고 사람들이 한데 모여 직접 일을 하고, 자연의 치료와 야외를 즐길 수 있 는 공간을 제공한다. 이 공간은 센터의 환자들이 가장 나약해진 순간에 목적의식을 고취해 주는데 사용될 수 있는 꽃과 다른 작물들이 자라나는 공간이 될 것이다.
Foster+Partners에 의해 설계된 센터는 Norman Foster와 Mike Holland가 설계한 맞춤 가구가 특징적이다. 그들이 제작한 가구에는 부엌 기구들과 테이블, 사이드보드 그리고 수납장이 있다. 글 제공: Foster + Partners
