BLACK BOX II

BLACK BOX II is the latest in a series of tiny additions impacting existing architecture in a big way. Conceived as a jewelry box, large openings blur the interior/exterior boundary, revealing its treasure of fine cabinetmaking work within through the playful use of complementary surface materials. The BLACK BOX II addition is covered with large plates of iridescent, black fibre cement board, with a perforated motif for the loggia, finely assembled with matching rivets. In contrast, blond wood and light porcelain and ceramics, illuminate the interior.

When large windows fold open to incorporate the garden into the home, interior and exterior materials interact to connect spaces. Inside, oak wood paneling covers the walls and ceiling of the shed, while a lattice of western red cedar lines the exterior alcove. The slate slabs of the terrace adjoin the concrete-like porcelain floor of the kitchen. Heritage of the past, the original oak wood floor of the dining room, preserved and restored, set the tone.

The kitchen island, made of solid oak, stands monumentally in the centre and serves as an altar to daily rituals. At the perimeter stands, more soberly, white or black furniture and cabinetry. This project is a plea for constructive art, recognizing the complicity between the architect, the builders and the owners, all actively involved in the search for quality, both technical and aesthetic. The art of architecture manifests itself here in all its dimensions.

This semi-detached townhouse, made of red clay brick, is typical of Westmount and the Notre-Dame-de-Grace borough of Montreal. Through the reconfiguration of outdated internal divisions and the grafting of two black volumes in juxtaposition, the pre-existing architecture is enhanced and transformed to better reflect the modern lifestyle and aspirations of its inhabitants. We are always striving to strike the right balance between new and old in order to create a coherent whole, preserving the authenticity of the existing details while affirming the contemporaneity of our interventions.

BLACK BOX II의 보석함과도 같은 건물의 큰 개구부는 실내외 경계를 모호하게 만들며 상호보완적인 재료의 사용을 통하여 고급스럽게 마무리 된 실내 가구들을 보여준다. BLACK BOX II 추가물은 보는 각도에 따라 색깔을 달리하는 큰 판과 검은색 시멘트 보드, 그리고 구멍난 무늬로 로지아, 그리고 고급스럽게 마무리하는 리벳으로 마무리 되었다. 그 와는 반대로 금발의 목재와 밝은색의 자기와 세라믹들이 실내를 밝힌다.

큰 창문이 열려 집안으로 정원이 들어올 때, 실내외 재료들은 공간을 연결하기위해 상호작용을 한다. 실내에서는 오크 목재 패널이 공간의 벽과 천장을 감싸고 미국 삼나무 격자가 실외 공간을 형성한다. 테라스의 슬레이트 판은 부엌 자기질 바닥과 같은 콘크리트와 경계를 이루고 있다. 기존에 있었던 다이닝룸의 오크목재 바닥은 다시 보존하여 재사용하였고 분위기를 만들어 낸다. 단단한 오크로 만들어진 부엌은 중심에 기념비적인 모습으로 위치해 있으며 일상생활에 약간의 일탈을 제공한다. 바깥쪽으로는 보다 수수한 희고 검은 가구들이 위치해 있다.

이 프로젝트는 건축 시공의 예술성에 대한 간청이다. 이는 건축가와 시공사 그리고 건축주가 합심하여 기능적으로나 미적으로 뛰어난 건물을 만들고자함에 있다. 건축의 예술성은 여기 건물 자체가 모든 방면에서 그 모습을 내보이고 있다. 붉은색 적별돌로 만들어진 반쯤 떨어진 타운하우스는 몬트리올의 Westmount 와 Notre-Dame-de-Grace 자치구에서는 일반적인 형태이다.

구식의 실내배치를 현대적인 형태로 바꾸고 두 개의 검은 볼륨을 병렬형태로 접합하여 기존의 건축물은 주거민의 염원을 나타내는 현대적인 건축물로 재탄생하였다. 우리는 기존 디테일의 정통성을 보전하고 우리가 만드는 현대적인 모습을 포함하는 일관적인 모습을 만들어 내기 위해 항상 새로움과 기존의 것 사이에서 균형을 잡기위해 노력하고 있다.
