MVRDV and Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI) have completed Tianjin Binhai Library as part of a larger masterplan to provide a cultural district for the city. The 33,700m² cultural centre featuring a luminous spherical auditorium and floor-to-ceiling cascading bookcases not only as an education centre, but also social space and connector from the park into the cultural district.

An oval opening punctured through the building is propped open by the Eye, a luminous sphere with an auditorium, which takes the main stage within the atrium and enlarges the perceived space within. Terraced bookshelves which echo the form of the sphere create an interior, topographical, landscape whose contours reach out and wrap around the façade.

In this way, the stepped bookshelves within are represented on the outside, with each level doubling up as a louvre. The futuristic library sits within a sheltered gallery, topped with cathedrallike vaulted arches, which winds its way throughout the scheme. MVRDV’s project is surrounded by four other cultural buildings designed by an international team of architects including Bernard Tschumi Architects, Bing Thom Architects.

The five levels building also contains extensive educational facilities, arrayed along the edges of the interior and accessible through the main atrium space. Public program is supported by subterranean service spaces, book storage, and a large archive. From the ground floor visitors can easily access reading areas for children and the elderly, the auditorium, the main entrance, terraced access to the floors above and connection to the cultural complex.

The first and second floors consist primarily of reading rooms, books and lounge areas whilst the upper floors also include meeting rooms, offices, computer and audio rooms and two roof top patios. Tianjin Library is part of German architects GMP’s 120,000m² master plan which aims to accentuate the characteristics of the surrounding districts. Through its design, the complex will become a junction point for the CBD, old town, residential districts, commercial areas and the government quarter; hoping to compensate for any missing program in each.

The library’s outer volume was given in the master plan so the Eye and its surrounding semi-public area are an internal space, like an inverted icon, acting as a central point and folly in the building. The library is MVRDV’s most rapid fast track project to date. It took just three years from the first sketch to the opening. Due to the given completion date site excavation immediately followed the design phase.

The tight construction schedule forced one essential part of the concept to be dropped: access to the upper bookshelves from rooms placed behind the atrium. This change was made locally and against MVRDV’s advice and rendered access to the upper shelves currently impossible. The full vision for the library may be realized in the future, but until then perforated aluminium plates printed to represent books on the upper shelves. Cleaning is done via ropes and movable scaffolding.

텐진 빈하이 도서관

MVRDV와 텐진 도시설계연구소(TUPDI)는 도심 문화지구 조성을 위한 대규모 사업의 일환으로 텐진 빈하이 도서관을 건설했다. 33,700m²의 이 문화 시설은 밝게 빛나는 구체형 강당과 바닥에서 천장까지 솟은 계단식 책장을 갖춘 교육 공간이자 소통 공간이며 인근 공원을 문화지구로 끌어들여주는 연결고리다. 건물의 타원형 창은 아이(Eye)라는 빛나는 구체형 강당 옆에 모습을 드러내며 아트리움의 중심이 되고, 내부 공간을 넓어 보이게 해준다. 강당의 구체 형태에 대응하는 계단식 책장은 실내 지형 및 풍경을 정의해주고, 이들의 윤곽선은 길게 뻗어 나가 입면부를 감싸 안는다. 이는 내부의 계단형 책장이 외부에도 드러날 수 있게 해주고, 책장의 각층은 루버 역할을 한다. 이 미래지향적 도서관은 실내 갤러리 안에 자리하고 있으며, 그 위로는 교회 건축에서 볼 수 있는 아치 구조가 늘어서 있다.

MVRDV의 빈하이 도서관은 버나드 추미 아키텍츠, 빙 톰 아키텍츠를 비롯한 세계적 건축사무소가 설계한 네 개의 문화 시설로 둘러싸여 있다. 5층 도서관 건물은 실내 경계를 따라 배치되어 있으며 아트리움을 통해 접근 가능한 대규모 교육 시설 역시 갖추고 있다. 지하 서비스 공간, 장서 보관소, 대형 자료실 등은 공공 프로그램을 지원해준다. 1층 방문객들은 어린이 및 어르신 전용 독서실, 강당, 주 출입구, 위층으로 이어지는 계단식 접근로, 문화 시설로 가는 통로 등으로 쉽게 이동할 수 있다. 2, 3층은 독서실, 서가, 라운지를 중심으로 구성되어 있으며, 그 위층에는 회의실, 사무실, 컴퓨터 및 음향 장비실, 옥상 파티오 2개 등이 마련되어 있다. 텐진 도서관은 독일 건축사무소 GMP의 지역 특성 강조에 초점을 맞춘 120,000m²의 마스터 플랜의 일부를 구성한다.

디자인을 통해 도서관 시설은 도심, 구도심, 주거지역, 상업지역, 관공서지역의 접점이 되어 각각의 부족함을 메워줄 것이다. 도서관 외부 영역은 마스터 플랜에 편입되고, 따라서 아이와 그 주변 반공공 영역은 실내공간이 되어 역발상적 상징물 같은 도서관 건물의 중심이자 얼굴 역할을 한다. 빈하이 도서관은 MVRDV가 현재까지 가장 빠르게 진행했던 프로젝트다. 최초 스케치에서 개관까지 3년 밖에 걸리지 않았다. 주어진 완공 일정에 맞추기 위해 디자인 작업이 완료되자마자 대지 정리 작업을 진행했고, 긴박한 시공 일정 때문에 한 가지 중요한 계획을 포기해야만 했다. 바로 아트리움 뒤편 공간에서 상부 서가로 이어지는 접근로다. 설계변경은 MVRDV의 의견에 반하여 자체적으로 진행되었고, 상부 서가 접근로 설치는 이제 불가능하게 되었다. 도서관의 온전한 본 모습은 차후에 구현될 수도 있다. 하지만 그때까지는 다공질 알루미늄판이 상부 선반의 책들을 상징하는 역할을 할 것이다. 도서관 청소는 밧줄과 이동식 비계로 해결했다.
