Bamboo House

Under the rapid urbanization, cities in Vietnam have diverged far from their origins of being low density tropical green spaces. Newly

developed urban areas are losing their connection with nature. “Bamboo House” is a small residential project in a narrow alley called

“Hem” in Ho-Chi-Minh City.

This project aims at developing the concept of “House for Trees”, a series of a prototypical housing design that targets to provide green space within high density neighborhood. In Vietnam, there are countless narrow alleys called “Hem”. They are 2-3m wide, with similar, narrow, and long buildings running along both it’s sides, resembling a ravine.

The lanes are lined with imposing forms, and their cold facades give the street a dense and weighty aura. The windows are mostly kept closed to ensure their privacy. With this in mind, ‘Bamboo house’, has been designed to create a comfortable living space in spite of the limited area available. The site is dense and narrow, with only 2 sides to allow natural ventilation and light into the building.

The front facade is playful with planter boxes located at random points, creating interest and a more welcoming entrance. The client’s love for bamboo and its’ high relevance to Asian context resulted in a facade covered with bamboo plantations. In addition, the planter boxes that pop out from the front facade form deep eaves that allow the windows to be kept open even during the rainy season.

Towards the back end of the house, the design incorporates a semi-open staircase which is enveloped by creepers, allowing the branches and the leaves to function as a buffer layer that cut out direct flow of sunlight. Moreover, it also creates a comfortable distance between the neighborhoods. This is evidently visible in the bedroom that is close to the open bathroom and staircase. The front and the back facade are mostly open, wrapped with greenery, allowing cool wind to pass through the house.

As a result, the use of air con in the house has considerably reduced. In addition to growing bamboo on the front facade, the concrete form work is also made by using bamboo to allow a consistent design language. The bamboo texture also helps to reduce the intense and heavy appearance of conventional concrete wall and thus, improves the overall aesthetic quality of the house. This project provides a solution to create a comfortable and open living space that is surrounded by green in a highly dense and small site. It not only meets the functional and aesthetic needs but also connects the people with one another and more importantly, with nature.

대나무 주택

급속하게 이루어진 도시화로 베트남의 도시들은 그들의 낮은 밀도의 열대성 녹지 공간을 잃게 되었다. 새로 성장한 도시는 자연과의 관계성을 잃고 있다. 이 집은 호찌민 시내에 있는 “Hem”이라고 부르는 좁은 골목길에 위치한 소규모 주택이다. 이 프로젝트의 목표는 “나무를 위한 집”으로, 고밀도 구역 내의 녹지 공간을 목표로 디자인 한 프로토타입 주택 시리즈이다. 베트남 내에선 수많은 좁은 골목길이 있다. 이 길은 2-3m 너비에 비슷비슷하고 좁고 긴 빌딩이 협곡같이 양쪽으로 늘어져 있다.

이 도로들은 인상적인 형태로, 차가운 파사드는 골목길에 꽉 차고 무거운 분위기를 준다. 창문들은 대부분 프라이버시를 위해 닫혀있다. 이 집은 이러한 점을 고려하여 협소한 구역에도 불구하고 편안한 주거 공간을 위해 만들기 위해 설계되었다. 대지는 좁고 밀집되어 있고, 두 면만 빌딩 안으로 자연 환기와 자연광이 들어올 수 있다. 전면 파사드는 플랜트 박스를 무작위로 배치하여 재미와 흥미를 일으켜 환영의 입구을 조성하였다. 대나무로 가득 찬 파사드는 건축주의 대나무에 대한 애정과 아시아 환경과 높은 연관성으로 형성되었다.

더불어 화분을 전면 파사드로 튀어나오게 배치하여 깊은 처마를 형성하고, 창문을 장마철에도 열 수 있게 해준다. 집 뒤편에는 덩굴 식물로 싸여 있는 준개방형 계단이 있어 줄기와 잎이 완충재로 작용하여 직사광선을 차단한다. 게다가, 이웃들과 사이에 편한 거리감을 생성해준다. 이러한 점은 개방된 화장실과 계단과 가까이 있는 침실에서 확인할 수 있다. 전면과 후방 파사드는 개방되어있고 녹색 식물로 싸여 있어 시원한 바람이 집안으로 통할 수 있게 해준다.

그 결과, 집안에서의 에어컨 사용률이 상당히 줄었다. 대나무가 자라고 있는 전면 파사드의 콘크리트 거푸집을 대나무를 이용하여 만들어 동일한 디자인 언어를 사용했다. 또한, 재료로서 대나무는 콘크리트의 강렬하고 무거운 외관을 완화하고 주택의 전반적인 미적 수준을 높였다. 이 프로젝트는 녹지에 둘러싸인, 편안하고 개방된 주거 공간으로 밀도 높은 작은 대지에 해결책이 된다. 기능적 그리고 미적인 요구만 충족할뿐만 아니라 다른 사람들과, 그리고 자연과 연결해준다.
