Fjordenhus has been an exciting opportunity for us to bring years of research in diverse fields - urban space, light conditions, nature,

physical movement, how we use our senses - together in one project that truly melds artistic and architectural vision.

In the design team, we experimented from early on with how to create an organic building that would respond to the ebb and flow of the tides, to the shimmering surface of the fjord, and to the ephemeral qualities of daylight, changing at different times of the day and of the year. Fundamental to the concept of Fjordenhus is the notion that there is no one ideal position from which to view the building.

As you move around and through the structure, your perception of space changes continuously, constantly defined and redefined by your movement. It is the time it takes you to pass into or through the building that defines your experience of space. The level floor grounds you, but at the same time, the walls curve, lean in or out, and perpetuate a sense of movement.

Every line seems negotiable, depending on where you are - your movement makes the building soft; it gives you agency. Another key element of this project was to create the most immediated relation between a building and its environment. The outer walls, which are normally seen as a membrane between inside and outside, are spaces in Fjordenhus - sometimes the spaces are part of the interior and other times they open to the surroundings as balconies.

And there is a porosity to the building: while it stands directly in the water, which permeates parts of the ground floor, the building is shot through with many different openings that frame views of the fjord and the natural elements, which makes the presence of nature felt. More relational than monumental, Fjordenhus is co-created by its shifting fjord context as well as by the people experiencing it. It makes you conscious of your own presence - conscious not only that you are seeing the building, but that the building is also seeing you.

피요르덴부스

피요르덴부스를 설계하게 된 것은 여러 분야에서 수년간 연구해 온 자료를 모을 수 있는 좋은 기회였다. 도시 공간, 조명 조건, 자연, 물리적 움직임, 사람이 어떻게 감각을 사용하는지 등의 연구는 모두 이 프로젝트 안에서 진정한 예술과 건축적인 비전을 섞어 놓았다. 디자인팀은 초기부터 피오르드 협곡의 일렁이는 물에 반사되는 빛과 짧은 일조, 날마다 그리고 해마다 바뀌는 빛의 모습에 반응하는 유기적인 건물을 어떻게 만들지에 대해서 실험했다.

피요르덴부스의 근본적인 개념은 전체 건물을 볼 수 있는 마땅한 위치가 없다는 것이다. 건물 주위와 내부를 걷다 보면 공간 인식이 계속 바뀌며, 움직임을 따라 끊임없이 공간의 정의를 내린다. 사람이 건물에 들어가거나 통과하는데 걸린 시간이 그의 공간에 대한 경험을 정의한다. 평평한 바닥이 중심을 잡아주지만 동시에 벽이 곡선을 이루고, 안과 밖으로 기울어지거나 영구적으로 움직이는 느낌을 준다. 사람이 어디에 있는지에 따라 모든 선은 통행이 가능해 보인다.

사람의 움직임이 건물을 유연하게 해주며 그가 공간의 정의하는 선택권을 준다. 이 프로젝트의 또 다른 핵심 요소는 건물과 환경 사이에 가장 중요한 관계를 만드는 것이었다. 보통 외부와 내부의 보호막으로 여기는 외부 벽이 피요르덴부스에서는 공간이다. 때때로 그 공간은 내부의 일부였다가 다른 때에는 발코니로 둘러 열려 있다.

그리고 건물에는 다공성이 있다. 물 위에 우뚝 솟아 있지만 1층 바닥 일부분은 물에 스며들어 있고, 많은 개구부는 피오르드의 경치와 자연 요소들을 프레임 안에 담아 자연의 존재를 느끼게 해준다. 기념비적이기보다는 더 관계적인 피요르덴부스는 피오르드의 문맥을 움직이고 사람들이 경험하면서 함께 만들어간다. 이는 자신의 존재를 의식하게 하며 사람이 건물을 보고 있는 것만이 아니라, 건물도 마찬가지로 사람을 보고 있다는 것을 의식하게 한다.
