JA CURVE CHURCH

JA Curve Church is located on Jeju, a beautiful island in Korea. The site, located outside Jeju Island, is surrounded by dense pine forests and tangerine trees. The natural scenery and convenient transportation are ideal conditions for the JA Curve Church. The church was designed as a unique type of building, in harmony with the beautiful natural environment. The church is known for its simple form and the characteristics of the programs.

The exterior of the chapel is white so that the curved shape is more visible in the surrounding natural environment. The shape of the simple curve is further emphasized by the contrast of colors. The curved shape also symbolizes Jeju's natural environment. The mountains in Jeju, created by volcanic activity, form a gentle curve. The artificially created simple curved shape resembles a small volcanic mountain cone that can be seen from anywhere on Jeju Island.

The floor level of the lobby, which begins at 2.4m, gradually increases to 9.5m. Through this, you can experience a scale change directly from the outside space to the space for God. The ceiling is formed by one plate and provides a natural and comfortable prayer space. At the peak of the curve, warm light enters through the ceiling, and the curve of the ceiling naturally disappears into the sky. Jeju Island is composed of basalt due to volcanic activity. Basalt is an important material that has dominated the lifestyle and way of thinking on the island. The lower floor and ground surface of the building were designed in dark colors.

The offices, a restaurant, and meeting space are located on the first floor. Go up to the second floor through the outside space and the lobby and chapel can be entered through a small courtyard. The brief architectural form is basic for a religious space.

제주 중앙교회

제주 중앙교회는 제주도 외곽에 자리 잡고 있다. 대지는 울창한 소나무 숲과 귤나무 밭으로 둘러싸여 있으며, 자연경관이 훌륭하고 교통이 편리한 장소다. 교회를 위한 최적의 조건을 가지고 있다. 교회는 아름다운 자연환경과 조화를 이루는 동시에 독창적인 형태를 가지고 있다. 간단한 형태와 프로그램 특성을 바탕으로 구체적인 형태를 가진다.

외부에서 바라보는 하얀색의 매스는 주변 자연환경 속에서 커브 형태로 시선을 사로잡는다. 심플한 커브의 형태는 색상의 대비를 통해 더욱 강조된다. 커브 형태는 제주의 자연환경을 상징(Metaphor)하기도 한다. 화산 활동으로 만들어진 제주의 산들은 부드러운 커브를 이룬다. 인위적으로 만들어진 심플한 커브의 형태는 제주도 어디에서나 볼 수 있는 작은 산-오름을 닮았다.

1층에는 사무공간과 식당, 모임 공간이 있다. 외부공간을 통해 2층으로 올라가면, 작은 마당을 지나 로비와 예배당으로 진입한다. 간결한 형태는 종교적 공간이 가질 수 있는 본질적인 형태다.

2.4m에서 시작된 로비의 층고는 점차 높아져 9.5m까지 연결된다. 로비는 외부에서 신에게 다가가기 위한 공간으로, 높이의 차이를 통해 직접 체험할 수 있도록 만든다. 하나의 판으로 연결된 천장은 자연스럽고 편안한 기도 공간을 제공한다. 커브가 최고조에 이른 지점에는 천창을 통해 따뜻한 빛이 들어온다. 커브 천정은 자연스럽게 하늘로 사라진다. 제주도는 대부분은 현무암으로 이루어져 있다. 현무암은 제주도의 생활 방식과 사고 방식을 지배해 온 중요한 요소이다. 건축물의 저층부와 바닥은 현무암의 색을 반영한 어두운 색상으로 디자인됐다.
