Arriving in Delft is an unforgettable experience. From the outset, Mecanoo’s idea was to design a station that makes it clear to visitors that they have arrived in Delft. The station, in combination with the new city hall, sits atop a new train tunnel built in place of the old concrete viaduct that divided the city in two since 1965. Coming up the escalators, the impressive ceiling with the historic map of Delft unfolds. When you look outside, you see the city and the old station as a contemporary version of Johannes Vermeer’s painting ‘View of Delft’.

Interweaving past and future The city of Delft reflects its past: the multitude of historic buildings and canals; the ‘Prinsenstad’ city, closely connected to the Dutch Royal Family; and, of course, the world famous Delftware ceramic factories. On the other hand, the Delft University of Technology is at the forefront of technical innovation. The character of Delft, epitomised in this combination of past and future, was the starting point for the design.

Delft Blue A vaulted ceiling features an enormous historic 1877 map of Delft and its surroundings, connecting the station with the city hall. Within the station hall, walls and columns are adorned with a contemporary re-interpretation of Delft Blue tiles. You can walk directly from the station into the city hall. The glass skin of the building is designed to reflect the Dutch skies. The panels of fused glass with lens-like spheres reference a vernacular window design that can be seen throughout the historic city. The combination and rhythm of open panels of high performance glass and closed fused glass panels enable a high degree of energy efficiency.

Contextually compact Throughout the design process the building volume has been shaved and reformed to create a compact, highly efficient building form. The lowered roof lines at the corners provide a gradual transition towards the existing small-scale development of the Delft city centre and the adjacent Wester Quarter. The building connects the historic inner city on the east side of the railway tunnel with the residential neighbourhoods located to the west, realigning the centre of Delft. Incisions in the glass volume of the city hall building form a pattern of alleyways and courtyards, which are themselves inspired by the intricate structure of Delft.

Sustainable The facade responds to the different sun orientations, which determined the amount of glass incorporated, thus mitigating daylight needs while reducing heat gain in the summer months. The glass has a high light absorption factor but low solar absorption, and all windows can be opened manually for user comfort and natural ventilation. Solar panels on the roof provide 20% of the energy for the building mechanics and presence aware lighting. The GreenCalc+ score is rated at 270.

델프트의 역사와 문화가 교차하는 기차역

델프트(Delft)는 네덜란드 중서부에 위치한 도시로, 구 시가지가 거의 그대로 보존된 도시다. 과거와 미래가 수없이 교차되는 도시 속에서 역사적인 건물과 운하는 델프트가 어떤 곳인지 설명한다. 도시의 곳곳에는 세계적으로 유명한 델프트 도자기 공방들이 남아있으며, 네덜란드 최대 규모의 공립 공과대학인 델프트 공과대학교가 현대적 도시에 걸맞는 기술 혁신을 보여준다. 이러한 복합적인 매력이 있는 델프트에 새롭게 들어선 기차역은 델프트에 한 번 도착하면 잊을 수 없는 경험을 선사하는 곳으로 설계됐다.

역사는 델프트의 시청으로도 이용되며, 역과 시청이 서로 연결되어 있다. 건축물은 1965년 이후 도시를 둘로 분할한 오래된 콘크리트 육교 대신 지어진 새로운 기차 터널 위에 세워졌다. 역을 통해 델프트에 도착한 사람들이 지하 플랫폼에서부터 에스컬레이터를 통해 올라오면, 역 내부의 홀과 마주친다. 이 홀은 델프트의 지도로 꾸며진 인상적인 천장을 가진 곳으로 방문객들의 경험을 확장시킨다. 역사 밖으로 걸어 나가면 네덜란드의 유명 화가 요하네스 베르메르(Johannes Vermeer)의 그림 ‘델프트 풍경(View of Delft)’의 현대판 모습을 마주하게 된다. 이렇게 건축물은 델프트에 도착하는 순간부터 이 도시로 걸어나가는 순간까지 그림같은 경험을 제공한다.

건물의 유리 입면은 네덜란드 하늘을 반영하고 있다. 렌즈같은 타공되어 있는 유리 패널은 델프트가 가진 역사적인 도시의 모습에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 창문 디자인에서 영감을 얻어 디자인된 것이다. 고성능의 유리 패널과 고정된 융합 패널의 조합은 에너지 효율 측면에서도 높은 수준을 만족시키는 효과를 갖는다. 역사의 내부 공간에는 현대적으로 재해석된 델프트의 문화가 살아있다. 아치형 천장은 역과 시청을 연결하는 1877년의 델프트와 그 주변지도로 만들어져 있으며, 역사의 내부의 홀의 벽과 기둥은 델프트 푸른색 타일로 장식되어 있는 것을 볼 수 있다.

건축물의 형태는 최소한의 규모로 속에서 거대하지 않으면서도 효율적인 공간으로 꾸며져 있다. 건축물의 외관에서 보이는 낮은 지붕 선과 모서리는 이 도심과 인접한 곳에 있는 웨스터 쿼터먼트(Wester Quartment)의 도시개발에 점진적인 전환점이 된다. 건물은 철도 터널의 동쪽에 있는 역사적인 내부 도시와 서쪽에 위치한 주거지를 연결하여 델프트의 중심지를 재정비하고, 시청의 유리 볼륨의 절개된 부분은 델프트 골목길과 뜰의 패턴이 형상화된 것이다.

입면은 다양한 태양의 방향에 반응하도록 설계됐는데, 유리와 다른 종류의 패널이 섞이면서 만들어져 있다. 이는 여름철의 열 취득은 줄이고, 내부의 스미는 뜨거운 빛의 양을 감소시킨다. 역사에 쓰인 유리는 광 흡수율은 높으면서, 태양열 흡수율은 낮은 재료로, 모든 창문을 수동으로 열면 자연 환기가 가능하면서 쾌적한 내부 환경을 만들어준다. 지붕에 설치된 태양열 전지판은 건물의 기계와 외관 조명에 20%의 에너지를 제공하며, 지속가능한 설계에 대한 고려도 되어 있음을 알 수 있다.
