The project has been questioning of the possibilities on a small place of only 160 square meters to what it can be more than a mere flat floor with a roof as in a usual conventional ‘multipurpose’ space. An empty flat space is in fact can be thought of as a ‘no-purpose’ rather than a ‘multipurpose’ place. A real multipurpose pavilion needs an architecture that triggers various uses and accommodates multiple activities suitable for the community and the location.
The floor plate of the pavilion is folded like a piece of paper forming different spatial configuration to allow for various activities oriented mainly towards the great sea view. All dimensions and angles of the planes and the cuts are designed to match with human comfortable uses in various positions. People can sit on different tiers to relax and enjoy the view without blocking ones behind. This fold may become a small amphitheater for mini-concerts, performances, meetings, etc. Parts of the floor are as if they were cut and lifted up to become seating and tables which can be used for group lectures, picnicking or as a place where children come to do their homework. Many other usages are still opened up for interpretation by users. To protect the place from a tropical radiating sunlight during the day, the project takes an idea of a tree shading as a starting point. The roof is composed of layers of leaflets. The upper layer casting shading over the lower layer reduces heat transmission significantly. The roof planes which consist of smaller material units, allows rising hot air to escape the building easily through the gaps between them, while allowing bits of sunlight to shimmer through.

본 프로젝트는 160㎡밖에 안되는 작은 공간이 통상적인‘ 다목적’ 공간으로써 단지 지붕을 가진 평평한 바닥이 아닌 어떻게 더 나은 존재가 될 수 있는가에 대한 질문을 제기해 왔다. 빈 평평한 공간은 사실‘ 다목적’ 공간이라기보다는‘ 목적이 없는’ 공간으로 생각될 수 있다. 진정한 다목적 파빌리온은 다양한 사용을 촉발하고, 커뮤니티와 장소에 적합한 다양한 활동들을 수용할 수 있는 건축양식이 필요하다.
이 파빌리온의 바닥 판은 한 장의 종이처럼 접혀 있으며 웅장한 바다 전망을 향한 다양한 활동을 할 수 있도록 여러 가지 공간적 배치를 형성한다. 모든 평면의 치수와 각도는 다양한 자세에서 편안하게 사용할 수 있도록 설계되었다. 사람들은 각자 다른 단에 앉아 뒷사람을 가리지 않고 휴식을 취하고 풍경을 즐길 수 있다. 이 접힌 자리는 미니 콘서트, 공연, 회의 등을 위한 원형 극장이 될 수 있다. 바닥의 일부는 분할되고 올려져 단체 강의나 피크닉, 혹은 어린이들이 와서 숙제를 할 수 있도록 좌석과 테이블이 된다. 사용자들의 해석에 따라 더 많은 용도로 사용될 수 있다. 하루 동안 열대성 복사열로부터 공간을 보호하기 위해 나무 그늘이라는 아이디어를 프로젝트의 시작점으로 삼았다. 지붕은 얇은 판들로 이뤄져 있다. 하단 층 전체에 그늘을 드리우는 상단 층은 열전달을 상당히 감소시킨다. 더 작은 재료 단위로 구성된 지붕 면은 상승하는 뜨거운 열이 그 틈 사이로 쉽게 빠져나가도록 하면서도 약간의 햇빛이 그 틈 사이로 비치게 한다.
