MYEONGMAL SENIOR COMMUNITY CENTER

The project objective was to build a new senior center based on passive design principles on a site which became available after the existing senior center and pavilion had been demolished under Suncheon’s grand town redevelopment project. The proposed senior center marked the start of a series of projects through which a passive design-applied community center and rural housing estate were built later. Building a passive building under circumstances in which clear standards for passive houses are not set up was a difficult task for a public institution.

Speaking of the design process of senior center and pavilion, complicated designs work against passive buildings in terms of thermal performance or thermal bridge effect, so their exterior design often end up in simplicity. With this in mind, in a way to cater for both functional and design requirements, the new senior center and pavilion are designed as one building, and this helps to get away from simplicity and improve the design quality. During the construction, when an important construction stage for a passive building project was underway, the architect visited the site almost every day like a stationed construction inspector, and sometimes participated in the work. Such an effort contributed to the birth of this new senior center with the best performance (1.1L) at the time, and the center received a certificate from a Passive House Institue Germany. The project was challenging as there were conflicts with contractors who didn’t have much understanding of passive houses during the construction, nevertheless, the new senior center will be loved by its users by providing them a comfortable and pleasant space.

명말경로당

마을정비사업으로 기존 경로당과 정자가 철거되고 새로 마련된 자리에 패시브하우스로 경로당을 신축하는 프로젝트였다. 에너지자립도시를 만들겠다는 순천시의 야심 찬 계획 하에 시작된 첫 번째 프로젝트였다. 명말경로당은 이후 패시브하우스로 지어진 동사무소, 패시브하우스 전원단지 등 지속적인 활동의 시발점이 되었다. 국내에서는 패시브하우스의 기준도 명확하게 정해지지 않은 상황에서 패시브하우스를 관공서에서 시행한다는 것이 쉽지는 않은 상황이었다.

경로당과 정자를 설계하는 것이었는데, 패시브하우스는 디자인이 복잡해지면 단열성능 및 열교 등에서 불리하게 적용되기 때문에 외형 디자인이 자칫 단순해지기 쉽다. 기능과 디자인을 만족시킬 수 있는 방법으로 경로당(패시브하우스)과 정자를 하나의 건물로 구성하여 단순함을 탈피하고 디자인적으로도 완성도를 높였다. 시공하는 과정에서도 패시브하우스의 중요한 공정에는 거의 매일 상주감리처럼 현장에 출근하였고, 때로는 함께 시공을 하기도 했다. 이러한 노력의 결과물로 당시로서는 최고의 성능(1.1리터)을 가진 경로당으로 독일 패시브협회에서 발부하는 인증서를 받게 되었다. 시공 중 패시브하우스를 이해 못하는 시공자들과 많은 어려움도 있었지만 경로당을 이용하는 분들에게 편안하고 쾌적한 공간으로 사랑받았으면 한다.
