Containing Jeju’s Nature 

Jeoji-ri is a village located at the highest place of Hangyeong-myeon, at the western side of Jeju. Here a red gallery that resembles volcanic clusters was built. The gallery is situated close to Jeoji Artists’ Village.

The concise yet heavy form of the gallery is reminiscent of Jeju’s unique sceneries, such as volcanic cones, stone walls and volcanic clusters. The oblique cuboid of the gallery, which is like a volcanic cone, is also like an objet on display against the backdrop of the landscape of Jeju’s Gotjawal. The gallery’s interior is used as a space to permanently exhibit the owner’s personal art collection, and a design that dignifies these exhibits was considered. The red clay bricks that form this cube are made from natural materials. The soft red color and rough texture of the clay bricks made by baking soil are like Jeju’s volcanic clusters. The bricks are exquisitely stacked like ancient pavilions, emphasizing the value of time and process of the art gallery.

The interior consists of two floors, and as soon as one enters, a pure white space embraces the visitors. This white color exists as the background of the artworks. The circulation that allows one to admire the displayed artworks along the space as well as the light and color that surround the space all achieve a balance, allowing it to be used as a flexible exhibition space.

제주의 자연이 담긴 저지리의 갤러리 데이지 

저지리는 제주도의 서쪽, 한경면에서도 가장 높은 곳에 위치한 마을이다. 이곳에 화산송이를 떠올리게 하는 붉은색의 갤러리가 들어섰다. 갤러리 데이지는 저지문화예술인마을과 가까운 곳에 위치한다.

갤러리의 간결하면서도 묵직한 형태는 오름과 돌담, 화산송이 같은 제주도가 가진 고유의 풍경의 이미지를 떠올리도록 만든다. 마치 오름같은 갤러리의 사선 입방체는 제주도 곶자왈의 풍경을 배경으로 전시된 하나의 오브제 같기도 하다. 갤러리 내에는 건축주가 직접 수집한 미술품이 상설로 전시되는 공간으로 사용되는데, 이러한 전시품의 품격을 높이는 디자인이 고려된 것이다. 이 입방체를 구성하는 붉은색의 점토벽돌은 자연의 재료로 만들어졌다. 흙을 구워서 만들어낸 점토벽돌에서 느껴지는 부드러운 붉은색 색감과 거친 느낌의 질감은 제주의 화산송이 같다. 벽돌은 마치 고대 파빌리온의 형태처럼 정교하게 쌓여져, 미술관이 추구하는 시간과 과정의 가치를 돋보이게 만든다.

실내는 2층으로 구성되어 있으며, 들어서자 마자 순백색의 공간이 방문객을 감싼다. 이 백색은 미술품의 배경으로 존재한다. 공간을 따라 전시된 미술품을 돌아볼 수 있는 동선과 공간을 감싸는 빛과 색은 균형을 이루면서, 유연한 전시공간으로 사용된다.
