The <Ex of In House> explores a language of space, aimed at inner spatial energy strongly bound to the ecology of the place - questioning current cliches of architectural language and commercial practice. The house is a built manifestation of the research and development project Explorations of "IN" under development at Steven Holl Architects since June 2014.

On twenty-eight acres of forested rock outcropping, the site named ‘T2 reserve’ has been established as an experimental topological landscape. Slated to be a subdivision with five suburban house plots, the site was joined into one natural preserved landscape. As a compressed form of 918 square feet on a site of twenty-eight preserved rural acres, the house serves as an alternative to modernist suburban houses that “sprawl in the landscape”. Instead, the Ex of In is a house of compression and inner voids. The house’s geometry is formed from spherical spaces intersecting with tesseract trapezoids intended as a catalyst of volumetric inner space. The geometry of the spherical intersections begins to be felt at the entry porch; an orb of wood carved out of the house volume welcomes the entrant.

The shift in section of the house alters internal space with vertical dynamic spatial overlap. Situated around one main volume, open to the second level, with the kitchen placed in the center, alternative use patterns are created. There are zero bedrooms, yet the house can sleep five. Instead of fossil fuel, the house is heated geothermally. Instead of grid power, the house has electricity from the sun. Thin film SoloPower photovoltaic cells are connected to a Sonnen battery energy storage system, allowing the house to be energy independent. All light fixtures are 3D printed in PLA cornstarch-based bioplastic. Glass and wood are locally sourced. The house was made almost entirely from raw materials by the builders, crafting solid mahogany window and door frames, a mahogany stair and birch plywood walls. There is no use of sheetrock. The spherical intersection space was also crafted in curved, thin wood layers. All natural oiled wood and plywood interior finishes are part of the arte povera materiality and economy of this place of wabi-sabi.

ELEVATION

EAST ELEVATION

“Close to the pulse of the Sky,” the Ex of In House faces the rising sun with the entry space facing toward the coming of dawn-light each morning. The forward leaning facade slices an intersecting spherical volume embracing the visitor in a womb-like welcoming.

SOUTH ELEVATION

The South Elevation intersects the cyclic energy of the sun via a round cut, large enough to sun-heat the living space in winter with a shade deployed in summer.

WEST ELEVATION

The West Elevation is cut by a removed spherical three-way intersect in glass that includes a glass floor. The everyday miracle of a Huson Valley sunset-with its distant changing glow that so inspired the Hudson River School painters-is encircled west, partly south, and down through the glass floor.

NORTH ELEVATION

The North Elevation will also glow at first light of sunrise as the curved slice of the spherical entry bounces light to the north.

‘T2 reserve’ 라고 불리는, 28에이커(acres)의 수목으로 뒤덮인 암석 자락의 대지는 실험적인 지형이다. 5개의 교외 주택이 하나의 구획을 이루어 슬레이트 쳐져 있는 이 사이트는 하나의 자연적으로 보호받아야할 구획으로 합쳐졌다.

918피트(square feet)의 형태를 압축한 것을 28에이커(acres)의 보존된 농경 지역 위에 지어진 이 집은 대지 위에 아무렇게나 놓여진 현대의 교외 주택들에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 형태의 집들에 대한 대안책이 될 수 있다. 대신에, 이 프로젝트는 압축과 내부 보이드(void)의 주택이다.

이 집의 기하학적 형태는 구와 정육면체가 교차하는 공간을 내부공간으로 사용하는 형태를 취하고 있다. 구와 교차하는 기하학적 형태는 입구 주머니에서부터 보인다. 집의 부피에서 목재의 구 형태로 파낸 모습은 방문객들을 환영해주는 것처럼 보인다. 주택의 단면의 전환은 수직적이고 역동적인 공간의 겹침과 함께 내부공간을 변화시킨다. 중앙에 놓인 주방을 중심으로 2층을 향해 열린 하나의 주된 공간을 중심으로 대안적 사용 패턴이 만들어진다. 이 주택에 침실은 따로 없으나, 5명이 잘 수 있다. 이 주택은 화석 연료를 사용하지 않고, 지열로 난방을 한다. 전력 공급대신, 이 집은 태양열을 사용한다. 얇은 필름의 태양열전지는 태양열 에너지 저장 시스템과 연결되어, 집이 에너지를 독립적으로 사용할 수 있게 한다. 유리와 목재는 모두 지역에서 생산되는 것을 사용하였다. 이 주택은 거의 원재료를 그대로 사용하였으며, 견고한 마호가니 창문과 문 틀, 마호가니 계단, 그리고 자작나무 합판을 사용한 벽을 직접 맞춤 제작하였다. 석고보드는 사용되지 않았으며, 구와 교차하여 생긴 공간은 얇은 목재 층을 구부려 직접 맞춤 제작하였다.
