토리노의 언덕에 자리한 보르고 에르마다는 작은 마을을 뜻하는 ‘보르고(borgo)’라는 이름처럼 도시 안에 있는 작은 마을 같은 주거단지다. 넓은 녹지가 펼쳐진 대지 주변에는 네오고딕 양식의 산마시모(San Massimo) 교회와 같은 역사적인 건축물이 있다. 주거단지는 18세기에 지어진 빌라 안젤리카(Villa Angelica)와 20세기 초반에 지어진 팔라초 레덴토레(Palazzo Redentore)를 리노베이션하고, 건물 두 동을 신축하여 완성되었다.

 

과거와 현재를 유기적으로 잇는 ‘연결성’은 프로젝트의 주요 테마이다. 이를 가장 효과적으로 엿볼 수 있는 것은 주변 건물과 어우러지는 형태와 재료를 적용한 파사드이다. 1층을 따라 이어진 벽돌 마감재와 필라스터는 주변 거리의 벽돌 건물을 연상시킨다. 또한 서로 독립되어 있던 세 동의 건물 사이를 잇는 길을 설치하고,메인 출입 광장은 사람들이 만나는 커뮤니티 공간으로 재탄생시켰다. 더 나아가 동쪽의 빌라는 높낮이가 다양한 볼륨으로 계획하여 도시와 언덕을 자연스럽게 연결했다. 중심에 있는 보행자 출입구를 들어서면 인테리어 정원 ‘그린 오아시스’를 만나게 된다. 출입구에서 거리를 향해 계획된 창문은 내부와 외부를 연결하고, 안마당을 가로지르는 연결 복도의 창문에서는 교회를 다양한 각도로 조망할 수 있다.

 

건축물의 스타일은 ‘채움과 비움’으로 정의된다. 따뜻한 흰색과 회색 플라스터 마감과 전통적인 지붕 타일은 건축물의 입면을 채운다. 반면 팔라초 레덴토레의 최상단에 있는 ‘로지아(loggia)’는 비움의 공간이다. 앞이 트인 이 공간에서 언덕과 도시의 풍경을 바라볼 수 있다. 로지아의 목재 마감은 거대한 건축물의 인상을 부드럽게 변화시킨다. 거리를 향한 파사드에는 기존 건물 비율을 반영한 창문을 내고, 플라스터 마감으로 수직선을 강조하여 리듬을 극대화했다. 단지 내부를 향한 입면에는 테라스의 수직선을 강조하는 스틸 그리드와 벽돌 루버를 적용해 교회 입면과 조화를 이루도록 디자인했다. 빌라 안젤리카의 상단부는 백라이트를 적용한 메탈 시트로 계획했다. 기존의 돌림띠, 필라스터와 목재 창틀은 그대로 살리되, 입면에 테라스 부분을 새로이 추가하여 기존 건물의 대칭을 강조했다.

Borgo Ermada, situated on the hills of Turin, is a residential complex resembling a small village within the city, as the name “borgo” is a translation for a small village. Surrounding the expansive greenery, there are historical architectural landmarks in a Neo-Gothic style, such as the San Massimo Church. The residential complex is a renovation project that involved Villa Angelica, built in the 18th century, and Palazzo Redentore, constructed in the early 20th century. The buildings were remodeled, and two new structures were added to complete the project.

 

The organic connection between the past and present as the central theme of the project. The most effective manifestation of this theme is seen in the facade, where the form and materials harmonize with the surrounding buildings. The brick finishes and pilasters extending along the first floor evoke the brick buildings of the nearby streets. Additionally, a pathway connecting the three independent buildings was constructed, and the main entrance plaza was revitalized as a community space for people to gather. Furthermore, the villa to the east was planned with varying heights to naturally connect the city and the hills. Upon entering the central pedestrian entrance, one encounters the interior garden known as the “Green Oasis.” Windows installed toward the street from the entrance connect the interior and exterior, and the windows along the connecting corridor crossing the inner courtyard offer views of the church from various angles.

 

The architectural style is defined by “filling and emptying.” Warm white and gray plaster finishes, along with traditional roof tiles, fill the building's facades. On the other hand, the “loggia” at the top of the Palazzo Redentore is an empty space. In this open area, one can gaze upon the landscapes of the hills and the city. The wooden finish of the loggia subtly transforms the impression of the massive structure. Facing the street, the facade incorporates windows reflecting the proportions of the existing buildings, emphasizing vertical lines with plaster finishes to maximize rhythm. For the entrance facade, facing the interior, a design was created to harmonize with the church facade, featuring steel grids and brick louvers emphasizing the vertical lines of the terrace. The top portion of Villa Angelica was planned with backlit metal sheets. While preserving the existing cornices, pilasters, and wooden window frames, a new terrace section was added to accentuate the symmetry of the original building.
