DODUMJALI HOUSE

On a bitter winter day, I met an energetic family at the seaside of the Incheon. They said that a stabilized house for the family is important despite the commuting to the Seoul will be arduous. They have lived life, encouraging each other in tough days. And they wanted to live in a new house with such a lifestyle. Therefore, I want to design a house resembling this family.

The site was located at the intersection of the housing area, having a rounded shape at one side. Since the location of the parking lot was designated, the building should have been built at the warped site. Due to the difficult contexts, it was hard to arrange spaces as they wished. As I wanted to build a house pair with the land, I came up with numerous ideas, though all of them were unsatisfactory.

At first, I started sketching the shape of the house with the thought of “encouraging life”, and the final form of the house was like a musical note. Hence, the house was named as DODUMJALI. As the round-shaped mass

was made by wooden structure not by concrete, there were difficulties in the process of the construction. Also, there were lots of worries about the construction cost and the discomfort, living in irregular round-shaped living area.

The owner agreed on putting a value on the satisfaction in the house that resembles the land, holds the worth of family’s life, and is the unique hose for the family. Although there were a lot of practical problems, the project was possible due to the strong will of the owner who wanted to realize as he wanted. Due to the limited budget, some parts of the construction were done by the owner, and I express my respect to the constructor to accept the construction even in a difficult situation. Whenever I meet the family who have become bright and lived as they wished after moving into the DODUMJALI, I am very proud of it.

돋움자리주택

추운 겨울날 인천 바닷가에서 에너지 넘치는 가족을 만났다. 서울까지의 출퇴근이 조금 힘들더라도 가족의 안정된 보금자리가 더욱 중요하다고 생각한다고 했다. 고단한 삶 속에서 서로를 북돋아 주는 삶을 살아왔고 새로운 집에서도 그런 가치를 가지고 살고 싶다고 했다. 그래서 이 가족을 닮은 집을 설계하고 싶었다.

대지는 택지지구의 사거리에 자리잡은, 한 쪽이 라운드 형태인 땅이었다. 주차장의 위치가 지정되어 있어 결국에는 대지가 굴곡진 부분에 건축물을 세워야 하는 조건이었다. 조건이 까다로워 원하는대로 공간을 배치하는 것이 어려운 대지였다. 땅과 어울리는 집을 만들고 싶어 여러가지 배치를 생각했지만 마음에 들지 않았다.

‘북돋아 주는 삶’이 대지에 어울리면 좋겠다는 생각을 하고 독특한 형태의 스케치를 하게 되었는데, 그 형태는 흡사 음표를 닮은 듯한 형태였다. 그래서 이름을 돋음자리표라고 정했다. 콘크리트가 아닌 목구조를 이용해 라운드 형태의 매스를 구현해야 했기 때문에 시공상 어려움이 있었다. 또, 비용상의 어려움과 보편적이지 않은 곡선으로 된 실내 공간으로 인해 생기는 불편함까지 생각하느라 고민이 많았다.

건축주는 땅을 닮은 집, 가족들의 삶의 가치를 담은 집, 우리 가족만의 집에서 느낄 수 있는 만족감에 가치를 더 두자는 것에 동의했다. 현실적으로 어려운 과정이 많았지만 공간구성과 형태에서 원하는 바를 반드시 구현하고 싶다는 건축주의 의지가 있었기에 가능했던 프로젝트이다. 한정된 예산으로 인해 일부 공사는 건축주가 직접 시공했고, 어려운 조건 속에서 흔쾌히 공사를 수락한 시공사에게도 경의를 표한다. 돋움자리주택에 입주한 뒤에 더욱 밝고 해맑아진 아이와 원하는 삶을 살고 있는 부부를 만날 때마다 무척 뿌듯하다.
