DOSHISHA CHAPEL COMPLEX

The site assigned for Doshisya Kyotanabe Chapel, which houses the Chapel and Niijima Jo (Doshisya University founder) Exhibition space, is separated by a 6-meter campus passageway into two sites. The required programs physically take up area of both sites.

So, we searched for the meaning of designing one building on two sites ? philosophically and visually ? rather than two buildings on two sites. Unraveling history of the oldest private university in Japan, Doshisya University, it was founded in 1875 by Niijima Jo who traveled across Pacific Ocean to the United States despite the Japan national ban of international travel, and encountered Christianity (Protestant); he then founded Doshisya aiming to educate young men and women of Japan with moral values of Christianity.

We symbolized the Pacific Ocean separating Japan and United States with the water feature “Niijima Jo’s Ocean” spanning across the campus passageway to the two sites, and considered by directly facing the Chapel and Niijima Jo Exhibition Space to each other, we can utilize the character of the separate two sites to add value which is unique to Doshisya University. Philosophically the Chapel(“Christianity value”) and Niijima Jo Exhibition Space (“Liberalism”) together formed the founding spirit of Doshisya University; by bringing the Chapel and Niijima Jo Exhibition Space close to each other, we feel the spirit of Doshisya can be naturally perceived by the students.

Externally by offsetting buildings volumes, we aesthetically included the campus passageway as a part of the building design. Internally, we eliminated any openings to the longitudinal building elevations in order to bring the sense of distance closer between rooms at the two sites, 38-meters apart at maximum. From within the buildings, we have placed large clear openings only at the short elevations, hence deliberately restricted visual connection from within only to direct to the opposite building.

We further enhanced the connection to the opposite building by continuing steel columns at 2.6- meter spacing from one building to the next. We set out on a journey to find meaning of the separated sites ? meaning that is unique to Doshisya University ?, then enhanced that meaning with the design of our building. By designing the buildings with visual integrity from outside and within, we believe we have achieved one building ? philosophically and visually ? on ⓒ Daici Ano two separate sites.

도시샤 

교타나베 교회 예배당과 니이지마 조(도시샤 대학 설립자) 기념 전시관을 포함하는 도시샤 쿄타나베 교회 대지는 폭 6m의 캠퍼스 도로에 의해 둘로 분리되어 있었다. 요구된 프로그램은 물리적으로 양쪽을 전부 사용해야 했다. 이에 우리는 두 개의 대지에 각각 건물을 짓기 보다 하나의 건물을 짓기 위한 철학적, 시각적 당위성을 찾기 시작했다. 일본에서 가장 오래된 사립대학인 도시샤 대학의 역사를 설명하자면, 당시 일본의 해외여행 금지법을 어기고 태평양을 지나 미국으로 건너가 기독교(장로교)를 접한 니이지마 조가 1875년에 설립했으며, 그는 일본의 청년들에게 기독교의 도덕적 가치를 전하기 위한 목적으로 대학을 세우게 되었다.이것에서 영감을 받아 일본과 미국을 가르는 태평양을 캠퍼스 도로를 가로질러 두 대지를 잇는 “니이지마 조의 바다”라는 수공간으로 표현했다.

그리고 예배당과 니이지마 조 기념 전시관을 서로 마주보게 함으로써 분리된 두 대지의 특성을 활용해 도시샤 대학에 독특한 가치를 부여했다. 철학적으로 예배당(기독교 가치)과 니이지마 조 기념 전시관(자유주의)은 함께 도시샤 대학의 기본 정신을 상징한다. 예배당과 전시관을 가깝게 배치함으로써 우리는 학생들에게 도시샤 대학의 정신이 자연스럽게 전달되는 것을 느낄 수 있었다. 외형적으로 두 건물을 분리함으로써 캠퍼스 도로를 건물 디자인의 일부로 아름답게 편입시켰다. 내부적으로는 최대 38m까지 떨어져 있는 두 대지 내 여러 공간 사이의 거리감을 줄이기 위해 건물 장축선상의 창을 전부 없앴다.

실내에는 단축선상에만 커다란 투명 창을 설치해 내부의 시야를 맞은편 건물로 제한했다. 또한 한쪽 건물에서 맞은편 건물 방향으로 강철 기둥을 2.6m 간격으로 연달아 세워 연계성을 더욱 강화했다. 분리된 대지의 의미, 도시샤 대학만의 특별한 의미를 찾아내기 위해 노력했고, 교회 건축으로 그 의미를 강화했다. 외부 그리고 내부에서 시각적 일관성을 보여주는 이 건물을 완성함으로써 두 개의 대지에 철학적, 시각적으로 하나인 건물을 세운다는 목표를 달성했다고 생각한다.
