Lane 189, located in the Putuo district in central Shanghai - opposite Chang Shou Park and close to the Jade Buddha Temple - is designed to provide a lifestyle destination for Shanghai’s young professionals. Lane189 combines retail, restaurant and office spaces in an organisation that rearranges the typical mall into a vertical city centre that provides opportunities for shopping, strolling, eating, gathering and resting.
The design incorporates elements of ‘old Shanghai’ through geometry, pattern and materialisation and combines these with a contemporary urban experience, thereby creating a destination with a distinctly Shanghai feel. The existing qualities of the immediate urban surroundings, which include small-scale restaurants and boutique stores, are reflected in the building where they are stacked vertically to populate the envelope with programmatic destinations that can be seen from street level. Inside, street life qualities are mixed with lifestyle retail features distributed throughout the building to enable the facade to show the inside qualities of the mall.
The organisation of the building encourages the visitor to stroll through and explore the different levels of the complex The facade is designed to support the overall design concept of a programmed facade and to create an architectural depth for the building envelop. The use of multi-layered components enables a variety of views towards the surroundings, whilst simultaneously providing functional transparency and reflectivity in specifically located areas. Based on a hexagonal grid, the facade components follow the articulated geometry of the building and provide constantly changing perspectives.
A gradient transition from bigger to smaller facade components regulates the exposure of the inside to the outside and enhances the architectural dynamics towards the main entrance of the building. The facade therefore becomes an integrated active layer that can be programmed as display windows, vista points or balconies. On the lower façade a hexagonal grid consists of diamond shaped panels that are tied between pins forming a tensioned cladding system . Here the arrangement of the components can change across the facade from single layer to triple layer, up to a depth of 400mm.
Coming in different materials and being lit with RGB LEDs these panels create different visual effects: transparent or opaque, colorful or monochrome, reflective or matt. On the upper facade the components are made up of a single layer, of one size and are solid or perforated across the facade and towards the main entrance central to -of the building- the components change in scale and change from triple scale, from triple layer to single layer. Solid and open single layer panels are used on the rear of the building.
The interior of Lane 189 derives its character from a central void which cuts through the volume from base to top and is punctuated by a series of rounded plateaus. These smaller pockets, positioned in a rotational manner, create intimate plazas and are visually connected to the urban eyes of the facade. In this way the inside outside relationship is strengthened, while the central space acts as a main attractor and encompasses vertical circulation and orientation. The central void further creates view across the different levels and facilitates a clear view column from the second basement level up to the skylight art installation.
When seen from below the rounded plateaus resemble a cohesive layered organic structure, however when looking down from above the program of the plateaus are revealed. The multi-height spaces of the rounded plateaus accommodate individually themed programmes. The lower plateaus of the basement levels house a market plaza and the food court, while the first and second level plateaus hold an art street and grand balcony

레인 189는 상하이 중심부의 푸퉈(Putuo)지구에 자리 잡고 있다. 창수(Chang Shou)공원 맞은편에 있으며 옥불선사(Jade Buddha Temple)와 가깝다. 상하이의 젊은 전문직 종사자에게 생활 방식을 알리기 위해 만들어진 이 건물은 상업, 식당, 그리고 업무 공간을 결합한 전형적인 몰(mall)을 수직적 도시로 재배치하여 쇼핑, 산책, 식사, 모임 및 휴식을 위한 기회를 제공한다. 기하학적 형태와 문양 및 재료를 통해 ‘구 상하이’의 요소를 통합하고 이를 현대적인 도시 경험과 결합시켜 상하이적인 느낌을 주는 건물이다.
소규모 식당과 부티크 매장을 포함한 이 건물은 인접 도시의 기존 특성이 수직적으로 쌓여 건물에 반영되었다. 그 안에는 거리의 모습이 소매업을 통해 생활방식과 섞여, 그 외관이 쇼핑몰의 내부적인 특성을 그대로 보여준다. 또, 건물을 방문하는 사람들은 단지의 다른 수준을 산책하고 탐험할 수 있다. 건물 전면은 계획된 전체적인 설계 개념을 뒷받침하고 건물 외피의 건축적 깊이를 만들도록 설계되었다. 다층 구성 요소의 사용은 주변 환경에 대한 다양한 관점을 가능하게 하는 동시에 특정 위치에서 기능적 투명성과 반사율을 제공한다. 육각형 그리드를 기반으로 하는 입면은 건물의 분절된 모양을 따르고 끊임없이 변화하는 전망을 제공한다. 큰 전면 요소에서 더 작은 전면 요소로의 경사도 변화는 내부의 외부 노출을 조절하고 건물의 주 출입구를 향한 구조 역학을 강화한다. 따라서 입면은 표시 창, 조망점 또는 발코니로 프로그래밍 될 수 있는 통합 활성 층이 된다.
하단 입면에서 육각 격자는 장력 외피 시스템을 형성하는 핀 사이에 묶인 다이아몬드 모양의 패널로 구성되어 있다. 여기서 부품 배열이 전면을 가로질러 한 층에서 세 층까지, 최대 400mm까지 변할 수 있다. 이러한 패널은 다양한 소재로 구성되어 있으며, RGB LED조명으로 각기 다른 시각적 효과를 나타낸다. 투명 또는 불투명, 색상 또는 단색, 반사 또는 납. 상부 입면에서는 요소들이 단일 크기, 단일 층으로 구성되어 있고 정면을 가로질러 정사각형으로 뚫려 있으며 구성 요소의 중앙 입구를 향해서 크기가 변화하고 3중층에서 단층으로 바뀐다. 건물의 후면에는 단단하고 개방된 단층 패널이 사용된다.
레인 189의 내부 특성은 볼륨을 아래에서 위로 자르면서 생긴 중앙 보이드로, 일련의 둥근 모양에 의해 간헐적으로 발생한다. 회전식으로 놓여 있는 이 작은 주머니는 광장을 만들고 정면의 도시와 시각적으로 연결되어 있다. 이러한 방식으로 중앙 공간은 주요한 역할을 하고 수직 동선과 방향을 포함하는 반면, 내부 관계는 강화된다. 중앙 보이드는 나아가 다양한 층에 걸쳐 시야를 더 확보할 수 있으며, 지하 2층에서부터 천창 설치 미술까지 명확한 시야를 확보할 수 있다. 아래에서 보았을 때 둥근 평원은 응집력 있는 유기 구조와 비슷하지만 위에서 내려다보면 그 모양이 드러난다. 둥근 평원의 다층 높이 공간은 개별 테마 프로그램을 수용한다. 지하 1층 아래에는 시장 광장과 푸드코트가, 1층과 2층에는 예술 거리와 넓은 발코니가 있다.
