SEO SON GALLERY

The Seo Son Gallery is located within the area of congested high-rise apartments near the Beomeo Crossroads of Suseong-gu at the boundary point of low-rise dwellings, where development is yet postponed, and high-rise apartment blocks. 

The design started from disjoining the connecting link between the high-rise residential skyscrapers and old low-rise dwellings around the confined 132.2m² lot. An architecture that assists in recovering the psychological and physical sense of estrangement caused by the contrasting environment between the new apartment complexes and deteriorated low-rise abodes was aimed to be made, on a site located at the beginning of the passage, which is a shortcut for the apartment residents’ entry and exit and for the students commuting to school. 

The environmental factors of the site were considered for the selection of materials which cover the whole architecture. The exposed concrete that reveals the nature of physical properties and the Corten steel material, which displays the passage of time, were chosen as mediating materials that connect the present with the past. 

There were many concerns in trying to optimize the building-to-land ratio and the floor space index in order to secure the openness of the passage. The planning of the parking space on the north side of the site for the procurement of sunshine brought the effect of opening up the view of the confined northern passage. 

The main entrance of the building as well, while constructing a form that deeply embraces the approach rather than emphasizing the frontality of the architecture, was able to create a transitive space from the small site by making part of it into a parking space. With the stretched-out wing walls of the staircase, the effect of concealing the disorderly front view of the southern side from the user’s line of vision and attracting the landscape within the widely and lengthily spread out apartment complex into the building was aimed. In addition, the windows, doors and elevation were planned in order to throw away the view of the confusing exterior space at the eastern side as well as to embody the Beomeo Cathedral, which is seen far away, into the frame. 

Considering the securement of the floor height in order to overcome the limit of the concise mass and the number of floors of the interior space, a wall structure without pillars and beams was planned, and a double-sided exposure method was applied so that the feeling of exposure felt from the outside could be felt from the inside as well. The cafe on the first and second floors applied a multi-layered structure, arranged an effective space and was planned into curtain walls that can penetrate the landscape of the apartment complex. The office spaces of the third and fourth floors, in order to increase the concentration levels, was designed with the intention of holding only the key factors through the frame. 

The courtyard applied to the gallery space on the fifth and sixth floors, while blocking the gaze from the outside, absorbs the abundant light during the day and emits light to the outside of the building at night, aiming to create different atmospheres in both the interior and exterior of the building. From the fifth-floor courtyard, the sixth floor is entered through the following outer stairs. When standing on the bridge connecting to the sixth floor, the city’s scenery and night view, which can only be felt in the middle of the city center where high-rise apartments and commercial facilities are concentrated, can be enjoyed and a joyful space that fully contains the blue sky is created. As a space obtained from repeatedly thinking, the satisfaction was greater than regret after the completion of the multi-layer space of the fifth and sixth floors.

서손갤러리

서손갤러리는 수성구 범어네거리 인근 고층 아파트 밀집지역 내 아직 개발이 미루어진 저층 주거지와 고층 아파트 블록과 경계지점에 위치하고 있다. 40평의 협소한 대지 주변으로 고층 아파트와 오래된 저층 주거지와의 연결고리를 풀어가는 데에서 설계는 시작되었다. 아파트 주민들의 진출입과 학생들의 등하교 지름길인 통행로의 초입에 위치한 대지로 신축 아파트단지와 노후화된 저층 주거지의 대조적인 환경으로 인한 심리적, 물리적 단절감을 회복하는데 작은 역할을 하는 건물을 만들고 싶었다. 건축물 전체를 감싸는 재료 선정에도 대지의 환경적인 요인들이 고려되었다. 

물성의 본질을 그대로 드러내는 노출콘크리트와 시간의 흐름을 묻어내는 코르텐강의 소재는 현재와 과거를 잘 연결하는 매개적 소재로 작용하리라는 선정이었다. 통행로의 개방감을 확보하기 위해 건폐율과 용적률을 최적화하려는 많은 고민이 있었다. 일조 확보를 위한 대지 북측의 주차공간 계획은 협소한 북측 통행로의 시야를 한층 개방하는 효과를 가져왔다. 

건물의 주 진입부 역시 건축물의 전면성을 강조하기보다 한 발짝 물러서 접근을 깊숙이 받아들이는 형태로 구성하면서 일부를 주차 공간으로 만들어 내어 협소 대지에서 전이적 공간을 만들어낼 수 있었다. 계단실 전면부의 길게 뻗어낸 날개벽은 사용자의 시선을 남측의 어지러운 전경을 가리면서 넓고 길게 펼쳐진 아파트단지 내 조경을 건물 안으로 끌어들이는 효과를 기대했다. 또한, 동측의 혼란스러운 외부공간의 시야를 버리고 멀리 내다보이는 범어성당을 프레임에 담기 위해 창호와 입면이 계획되었다. 내부 공간의 간결한 매스와 층수의 한계를 극복하기 위한 층고 확보를 고려하여 기둥과 보가 없는 벽식 구조로 계획되었으며, 외부에서 느끼는 노출의 질감을 내부에도 느낄 수 있도록 양면 노출공법을 적용하였다. 

1, 2층 카페는 복층구조로 적용하여 효율적인 공간 배치를 하였으며 아파트단지의 조경을 그대로 투과할 수 있는 커튼월로 계획되었으며, 3, 4층은 사무공간의 집중도를 높이고자 프레임을 통한 주요 요소만 담아내려는 의도로 계획되었다. 5, 6층의 갤러리 공간에 적용된 중정은 외부의 시선을 차단함과 동시에 낮에는 풍부한 채광을 깊이 받아들이고 밤에는 건물 밖으로 빛이 발산되어 건물의 내외부의 색다른 분위기를 연출하고자 의도되었다. 5층 중정으로 나서면 이어지는 외부계단을 통해 6층으로 진입한다. 6층으로 연결되는 브리지(Bridge)에 올라서면 고층 아파트와 상업시설이 밀집한 도심의 한복판에서만 느낄 수 있는 도시의 풍경과 야경을 만끽할 수 있으며 하늘빛을 오롯이 담아내는 즐거운 공간을 연출할 수 있었다. 5, 6층의 복층 공간은 고민을 반복해서 얻어낸 공간으로 완성 후에도 아쉬움보다 만족도가 높았다.
