While enjoying a cup of coffee on a warm sunny afternoon, a mother makes a gentle smile when her eyes meet the eyes of her adorable children playing in the playground. It’s like a beautiful scene out of a movie. Also, it’s a picture which all parents with children would want to be part of.
Once the architect was asked to take the project by the client, he led the design process with this image in mind. The project is a shophouse near a children’s park in new downtown which is newly developed in response to the expansion of urban area in Suncheon. According to city’s urban master plan, the region allows the building to have up to five floors, but it consists of only three floors which have neighborhood living facilities on the 1st and 2nd floors and a residence on the 3rd floor.

As the roof has a slope, an attic is added on top of the residence on the 3rd floor, and the upper part of a glass staircase is used to provide lighting and ventilation for the attic. The top of the staircase can be used as a greenhouse in winter.

It was thought that the building needs to have some special features as it alone has three stories when most buildings in the area have four or five. Therefore, the staircase is taken as a main design feature, and glass stairs are installed at the center of the building in the direction of the children’s park. The building is positioned in the north section of the site, and a courtyard is inserted to share its border with the road in the south so that the whole exterior of building can be observed.

Many buildings in the area are built in a very short period time around the same time. According to the location map of new downtown, the project building is nestled at a secluded spot, so it’s not a place which gets exposed to many people. Nevertheless, it’s expected to become a building that people can’t help but stop on the street for a while to have SECTION a look at it once they come across it.

왕지 르블레

햇살이 따뜻하게 내리는 오후, 향긋한 커피 한 잔을 즐기며 놀이터에서 놀고 있는 사랑스러운 아이들과 눈을 마주치면 엄마는 부드러운 미소를 짓는다. 영화의 한 장면같은 아름다운 모습이다. 또한 아이를 갖은 부모라면 모두가 바라는 모습이기도 할 것이다.
건축주로부터 설계를 의뢰 받고 이런 모습을 상상하며 설계를 진행했다. 왕지 르블레는 순천시의 도시 확장으로 새롭게 정비된 신 도심지의 어린이 공원과 인접한 상가주택이다. 도시계획상 5층까지 가능한 지역이나 본 건물의 1, 2층은 근린생활시설, 3층은 주택으로 구성됐다.

지붕의 형태가 경사 지붕이다 보니 3층 주택 위로 다락이 구성됐고, 유리 계단실 상부를 통해 채광과 환기에 용이하도록 설계됐다. 유리 계단실 상부는 겨울에 유리온실로 사용된다. 주변 건물들이 대부분 4, 5층으로 지어지는 상황에서 홀로 3층으로 서 있어야 하니 독특한 요소가 필요하다고 생각했다. 계단실을 디자인 포인트로 정하고 건물의 중앙부에 유리로 된 계단을 설치하여 어린이공원을 바라볼 수 있도록 설계했다. 건물은 대지의 북쪽으로 배치하고 남측 도로와 접한 마당을 두어 전체적인 건물의 조망이 가능하도록 했다.

비슷한 시기에 주변의 많은 건물들이 한순간에 지어졌다. 전체적인 신도심의 위치로 보면 한쪽 구석에 위치해 있어 많은 사람의 눈에 띄는 곳은 아니지만 우연이라도 마주치게 된다면 잠시라도 멈춰 서서 바라볼 수 있는 건물이 됐으면 한다.
