The site is located in an old city center in Daegu called ‘Neuji Village’. The roads and infrastructure were poorly maintained, and the shape was an irregular triangle, connected with old alleyways. When I first visited the site, it seemed like the existing old house was welcoming me with a skeptical look and a question: ‘What sort of new live would you be able to give me?’ As if to answer that question, I stayed there for a long time and meticulously checked the site environment so that it could assimilate with the space.

The owner requested the building to consist of a rental space on the first floor, an office for the head office on the second floor, and a reception room as well as a conference room for the head office on the third floor. The design was proceeded based on the requirements of the owner, the amorphous site, the situation of the surrounding, etc. By spending a lot of time with the owner during the construction process, and integrating opinions and reflecting them to the design, we were able to construct a form that satisfied the owner, designer and builder.

This office building is a stepping stone for the business of the owner, Bando Communications Technology Co., Ltd., to prosper, as well as the brain that leads the business. When an outsider visits, they first meet the company through the building’s exterior. Thus, by thinking of it as the face of the company, the exterior of the building was finished with old blue bricks so that the weight and trustworthiness of the building could be felt in order to provide unchanging faith and trust. By creating the new based on the old, the design and construction works were finished with the desire that they would constantly develop without stopping. Just like creating something out of nothing, we hope that the company can breathe with good energy and be full of the breath of good energy so that they can be full of vigor in another new space, and just as a new life is born and as it grows healthy and big, we hope that the business can develop and thrive with each passing day.

대지는 대구에 ‘느지마을’이라고 불리는 구도심에 있다. 도로와 기반시설의 정비가 잘 되어 있지 않은 곳으로, 옛 골목골목으로 이어진 부정형의 삼각형 형태였다. 현장을 처음 방문한 나에게 기존의 낡은 주택은 ‘나에게 어떤 형태의 새 생명을 불어넣어 줄 수 있겠어?’라는 질문을 던지듯 의심 많은 눈초리로 나를 맞이하는 것만 같았다. 그 물음에 답하듯이 꼼꼼하게 현장 환경을 확인하며 그 공간과 동화될 수 있도록 오랜 시간을 그곳에서 머물렀다. 건축주는 건물의 1층은 임대 공간으로, 2층은 본사의 사무실, 3층은 본사 접견실과 회의실로 구성되기를 요구하였다. 건축주의 요구조건과 부정형의 대지, 주변현황 등을 바탕으로 설계가 진행됐다. 건축주와는 건축과정 동안 많은 시간을 함께 보내며 의견을 통합하고 설계에 반영하여 건축주, 설계자, 시공자 모두가 만족하는 형태로 건축할 수 있었다.

이 사옥은 건축주인 (주)반도통신기술 사업이 번창해 나가기 위한 디딤돌 같은 존재이며 사업을 진두지휘하는 브레인이다. 외부 인사가 방문했을 때 가장 먼저 회사를 만나게 되는 것은 건물 외관으로 회사의 얼굴과도 같은 것이라는 생각으로 변하지 않는 믿음과 신뢰를 주기 위하여 건물의 무게감과 듬직함이 느껴질 수 있도록 건물의 외관은 청고벽돌로 마감하였다. 옛것을 바탕으로 새로운 것을 창출함으로써 멈추지 않고 지속적으로 발전해 나가기를 염원하는 마음으로 설계 및 시공 작업을 마무리하였다. 무에서 유를 창조하듯이 또 하나의 새로운 공간에서 활력이 넘칠 수 있도록 좋은 기운으로 호흡하며, 좋은 기운의 숨이 가득하기를, 새 생명이 태어나 건강하고 크게 자라나듯이 사업이 나날이 발전하고 번창할 수 있기를 기원한다.
