NATIONAL HOLOCAUST MONUMENT

The Monument honors the millions of innocent men, women and children who were murdered under the Nazi regime and recognizes those survivors who were able to eventually make Canada their home. In addition the design memorializes the many Jews, homosexuals, Roma-Sinti, Jehovah’s Witnesses and political and religious prisoners who were persecuted.

Centrally located at the corner of Booth and Wellington Streets across from the Canadian War Museum, the 0.79 acre site connects the museum to the historic center of the capital city. It’s location near the capital and the Canadian War Museum, is an important reference towards the roles that politics and war have played in the historic events that the Monument represents. It links to the museum by pedestrian paths. The monument is a public space for gathering and contemplation for visitors. From afar it acts as a sculptural element in the urban landscape.

Cast-in-place, exposed concrete make the structure of the Monument, conceived as an experiential environment comprised of six triangular, concrete volumes configured to create the points of a star. The star remains the visual symbol of the Holocaust – a symbol that millions of Jews were forced to wear by the Nazis to identify them as Jews, exclude them from humanity and mark them for extermination. The spaces are representative of the badges that Nazis and their collaborators used to label homosexuals, Roma-Sinti, Jehovah’s Witnesses and political and religious prisoners for murder.

Large scale, monochromatic photographic landscapes of current day Holocaust sites – death camps, killing fields and forests – are painted with exacting detail on the concrete walls of each of the spaces. These evocative murals aim to transport the visitor and create another dimensionality to the interior spaces of canted walls and labyrinth-like corridors. Surrounding the monument, a rough landscape of various coniferous trees will emerge from the rocky pebbled ground surround the monument, inspired by Canada’s Boreal forest. The plantings are placed in a gradient that transitions from density to sparseness as one moves closer to the monument. This is mirrored in the hardscape of gravel that transitions from small to large. The Monument is an experience that combines architecture, art, landscape and scholarship in ways that create an-ever changing engagement with one of the darkest chapters of human history while conveying a powerful message of humanity’s enduring strength and survival.

국립 홀로코스트 기념관

이 기념관은 나치 정권 아래 살해당한 수백만의 순수한 남성, 여성, 어린이들을 기리며, 결국 캐나다를 그들의 터전으로 만들 수 있게 한 생존자들을 기억한다. 더하여, 이 기념관은 많은 유대인들, 동성애자들, 로마-신티, 여호와의 증인들 그리고 정치적종교적인 이유로 수감되어 박해받은 자들 추모한다.

캐나다 전쟁 박물관 맞은편의 부스 앤 웰링턴 스트리트의 모퉁이 중심부에 위치한 대지는 박물관을 제국 수도의 역사적 중심부와 연결해준다. 수도와 캐나다 전쟁 박물관에 가까운 이 위치는 기념관이 대표하는 역사적 사건에서 정치와 전쟁이 맡은 역할에 대한 중요한 기록이다. 기념관은 보행자 도로에 의해 박물관으로 연결된다. 기념관은 방문객들에게 모임과 사색을 위한 공공 공간이다. 멀리서 봤을 때, 기념관은 도시 조경에서 조형적 요소의 역할을 한다.

현장타설, 노출콘크리트로 만들어진 이 기념관의 구조는 별의 형태를 생성하는 여섯 개의 삼각형 콘크리트로 구성된 체험적 환경으로 여겨진다. 별은 홀로코스트의 상징으로 남겨져 있다. 별은 유대인들이 나치에 의해 유대인임을 구별하기 위해 부착해야 했던 표식으로, 이는 그들을 인간으로서 제외하고, 몰살하기 위함이었다. 공간들은 나치들이 그들의 협력자들과 동성애자, 로마-신티, 여호와의 증인들, 그리고 정치적, 종교적 살인에 의한 수감자들을 표식하기 위해 사용한 배지들을 대표한다.

거대한 규모의 단색 사진 같은 현재 홀로코스트 대지의 풍경(집단 처형장, 도륙 현장, 그리고 숲)은 각 공간의 콘크리트 벽에 상세하게 그려져 있다. 이 사건을 환기시키는 벽화들은 방문객들을 이동시키며, 비스듬한 벽들과 미로와 같은 회랑이 있는 내부공간에 다른 차원을 창조하게 하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 기념물 주위에는 캐나다 북쪽 지방의 숲에서 영감을 받은 울퉁불퉁한 돌들로 이뤄진 바닥으로부터 나온 다양한 침엽수들로 이뤄진 거친 조경이 나타날 것이다. 식물들은 빽빽함부터 듬성듬성 하기까지 기념관에서 가까워질수록 그 변화가 점진적으로 이뤄지도록 배치되었다. 이것은 작았다가 커지는 변화가 있는 자갈의 하드스케이프*에도 반영되었다. 기념물은 인류의 인내력과 생존력이라는 강력한 메시지를 전달함과 동시에 인류 역사의 가장 어두운 순간 중 하나에 대한 변화하는 약속들을 창조한다는 면에서 건축, 예술, 조경, 그리고 학문을 결합하는 경험이다.
