Many memories had been taken away from the original building built as a branch for the Bank of Seoul as a result of several extensions from 1962. We presented three concepts of dialogue in multiple levels for the remodeling competition proposal in 2017: (1) Dialogue between the building and the city; (2) Dialogue among different floor levels with relevant uses; and (3) Dialogue among people. The first concept was intended that the building rebuilt as a public facility should communicate with the city and secure publicness. To implement the concept, the central part was designed with combination of transparent glass and the media facade while preserving the memory of red brick tiles. This idea would transform the solid and authoritative existing building to a medium of communication and interaction between the building and the surroundings, and between users and passengers outside the building. The second was proposed to encourage communication among different uses while guaranteeing building performances for various space uses including exhibition, laborers’ rest and exchange, meetings among labor activists, and office work by labor support facilities. The last concept was to bring a flexible and scalable modular system in the shared space.

After a series of deliberations and discussions with the Chuntaeil Memorial Committee the building design was inevitably revised. From this procedure, stainless steel screen facade was born, and it is highlighted as the symbol of Chuntaeil memorial by reinterpreting the handwritten petition by Chuntaeil to a labor supervisor. The final detail of the facade is an outcome of collaboration among architects and engineers as an effort to resolve all the technical issues of manufacturing, installations and maintenance. Also, the material selection and design development were conducted to improve the readability, and to harmonize with the cityscape. The continuously connected text was intentionally spliced one-by-one to distribute the load, and attach the substructure, by fixing the brackets at the overlapped point between the substructure and the text, like stitching. Although the process of negotiation and design was a long hardship, it is meaningful that the new design idea is realized as a novel symbol of the memorial building, and shared memory of Chuntaeil and labor activism to remain in people’s memories.

In summary, we consciously tried to maintain the attitude toward publicness of the civic building and communication among people of inside and outside the building, and of different floors by implementing the transparent building facade and open spaces. By preserving the 50-year-history and introducing the coexistence of the old building with the newly renovated building surrounded with the rich context of Cheonggyecheon, we hope that the architecture would exist as a place for education and culture, and a shelter for citizens that can be loved for a long time.

전태일기념관

전태일기념관은 1962년 서울은행 수표교 지점으로 준공된 이후 몇 차례의 증개축이 이루어지면서 이전의 기억들이 지워져 있었다. 우리는 2017년 리모델링 현상설계 당시 3가지 개념을 제시했다. 첫 번째 “도시와 건물 사이의 대화”는 공공시설로 재탄생하는 건물이 도시와 소통하고 공공성을 확보할 수 있도록 만드는 것이었다. 기존 건물을 환기시키는 붉은 점토타일을 사용하고, 중심부는 미디어 파사드와 결합된 투명 유리로 변경하여 건물이 주변과 교류하는 소통의 매개체가 되고, 이용자들의 모습이 유리를 통해 비추어져 자연스러운 입면이 형성되길 의도했다. 두 번째 “층과 층 사이의, 유사한 용도 사이의 대화”는 휴게, 교류, 회의, 업무 등 다양한 용도를 수용함에 있어서 각각의 활용도를 극대화하면서도 다른 용도들 간의 소통을 유도하는 공간 개념이었다. 마지막으로 “방과 방 사이의, 사람과 사람 사이의 대화”는 이용자의 목적이나 규모, 체류시간 등에 따라 가변적이고 확장가능한 모듈 시스템을 공유 공간에 활용하는 구상이었다.

이후, 심의 및 건립추진위원회 협의 등을 거치며 일부 디자인이 변경됐다. 가장 두드러진 부분은 금속 파사드로, 기념관의 상징성을 직접적으로 드러낼 수 있도록 수정됐다. 전태일 열사의 자필 진정서를 예술적 측면에서 재해석하고, 금속 스크린의 색상이나 재질, 제조방식을 건축적 성능과 생산의 차원에서 구현했다. 더불어 가독성을 높이면서도 도시경관과 조화를 이룰 수 있는 재료를 모색하고, 글씨를 부재화하면서 글씨 자체가 최대한 드러나도록 여러 전문가들과 협력하여 최종 설계안을 도출했다. 필기체로 연결된 글씨에 틈을 주어 쪼개고, 하중을 받는 요소가 겹치는 부분에 하지를 설치했다. 가로 부재와 글씨가 만나는 지점마다 시공은 바늘땀을 뜨듯 브라켓을 고정한 후 글씨를 앵글로 연결하는 방식으로 진행됐다. 길고 어려운 과정이었지만 새롭게 결정된 디자인 아이디어가 실체화되면서 건물의 새로운 상징이됐다. 전태일과 노동 운동에 관한 기억을 공유하고, 사람들의 기억 속에 남게 되었다는 면에서 의미 깊은 과정이 아닐 수 없다.

설계와 시공 과정에서 건물의 외부는 시민과 소통하는 공공성을 확보하고, 내부에서는 다양한 활동을 자유롭게 펼치는 열린 공간을 구현하고자 계속해서 노력했다. 기존 건물이 지닌 50년이라는 시간의 두께와 청계천이라는 주변 맥락 속에서 오랫동안 시민에게 사랑받을 수 있는 쉼터이자 교육의 장, 문화의 터전이 되기를 기대한다.
